For a small business, the reviewed US vendor listings range from about $25–$29 per month for entry-level plans to $500 per month or more for higher-volume plans. Those are vendor prices checked on October 4, 2026—not a market average or a quote for your business. The right estimate depends on whether the service charges by call, by minute, or through a hybrid unit, and on setup fees, overages, taxes, and included features.

Published prices from AI answering services

The examples below are prices published by the vendors, not independently verified measures of typical industry cost. Check current terms before choosing: prices, taxes, and plan details can change.

Service Published plans Usage and additional charges
Aira $24.95/month for 30 calls; $59.95/month for 90 calls; $159.95/month for 300 calls. Aira’s pricing FAQ was updated May 5, 2026. Plans are metered by call. Unused calls do not roll over, and calls above the allowance are billed at the same per-call rate. Aira pricing FAQ
TALKVOX Starter: $75/month for 300 minutes; Professional: $250/month for 1,500 minutes; Business: $500/month for 3,500 minutes. Listed overages are $0.25, $0.20, and $0.15 per minute, respectively. Monthly billing has a $149 one-time setup fee; the vendor says annual plans waive it. TALKVOX pricing
Skaala (US plans) Essential from $29/month for 50 minutes; Business from $149/month for 400 minutes. The page was last updated April 27, 2026. Overage examples are $0.20/minute on Essential and $0.06/minute on Business. Prices exclude tax; the vendor says online plans are month-to-month and offers a 7-day trial. Skaala pricing
Callbook $79/month for 250 minutes; $149/month for 500 minutes; $299/month for 1,500 minutes. Listed overage is $0.40/minute. Its Starter page advertises $49 for the first month, then $79/month. Callbook counts the full answered conversation, from greeting through booking and confirmation, as usage. Callbook pricing
Heyline $99/month for 200 minutes; $199/month for 500 minutes; $499/month for 1,500 minutes. The listed 14-day trial includes 60 minutes. Heyline plans
Abby Connect Combined AI and human answering starts at $165/month. Abby describes usage in Abby Minutes; one Abby Minute allows up to two AI minutes. Because the offer includes human receptionists, it is not directly comparable to AI-only plans. Abby Connect service

These prices are not directly comparable: some plans include calls, others minutes, and a hybrid service uses its own unit. The lowest advertised monthly fee may not be the lowest cost at your call volume.

Estimate your likely monthly bill

  1. Estimate answered calls. Count the inbound calls the AI is expected to answer in a typical month, rather than every call your business receives.
  2. Estimate minutes. Multiply answered calls by average call duration to get a rough monthly minute requirement. For a plan sold by calls, compare your call count with its allowance instead.
  3. Confirm what the meter counts. Callbook says its usage includes the greeting, information gathering, calendar check, booking, and confirmation for an answered call. Aira sells call allowances. Do not assume another provider measures usage the same way. Callbook pricing Aira pricing FAQ
  4. Price the allowance and overage together. Compare your expected usage with the included calls or minutes, then add the vendor’s overage charge for any excess. Check whether unused usage rolls over; Aira says its unused calls do not.
  5. Add charges beyond the plan fee. Account for setup, applicable taxes, billing term, and any offer limited to an introductory period. For example, TALKVOX lists a setup fee for monthly plans, while Skaala says its prices exclude VAT. TALKVOX pricing Skaala pricing
  6. Run a busy-month scenario. Recalculate for a month with more calls or longer conversations. A plan that fits average usage may cost more once overages apply.

What changes the price besides call volume?

How usage is measured

A per-call allowance and a per-minute allowance answer different questions. A short call and a long call may each use one call under a call-based plan, while a minute-based plan can charge more for the longer conversation. Hybrid services may define their own unit, so ask for a worked example using one of your typical calls.

What the receptionist handles

Basic message taking is not the same as call transfers, appointment booking, follow-up, CRM connections, support for multiple numbers, language coverage, or website chat. Compare the tasks included in the specific plan, not just the service name. TALKVOX and Callbook publish examples of service features on their pricing pages. TALKVOX pricing Callbook pricing

Overages, setup, tax, and billing term

Find out whether calls to voicemail count, what happens at the usage limit, and whether the service offers alerts or caps. Then check one-time configuration charges, sales tax or VAT, trial conditions, monthly versus annual billing, and cancellation terms. An advertised monthly price may not include every item that appears on the bill.

Human backup and escalation

A service that can hand calls to human receptionists is a different offer from AI-only answering. Compare the escalation model and what its usage unit covers, as well as the monthly fee. Abby Connect, for example, describes a combined AI and human service using Abby Minutes. Abby Connect service

How to read the price range

Aira’s published usage examples associate 10–30 calls per month with a solo contractor or consultant, 30–80 with a salon, 40–120 with a small law firm, and 100–250 with a small dental or medical practice. These are examples supplied by Aira, not independently representative industry statistics. Aira pricing FAQ

  • 2-line operation: Conference between an outside line and up to 2 cordless handsets, expandable up to 12 handsets

For a small business, a sensible comparison starts with the number and duration of calls the AI will actually handle, then accounts for the vendor’s meter and overage rules. The cited listings show why a single “typical” price would be misleading: plan allowances and included service differ, and taxes or one-time charges can change the total.
