Xbox Cloud Gaming can use about 3.6 to 13.5 decimal gigabytes (GB) per hour during a sustained session. A useful planning figure is 6.75 GB per hour at 15 Mbps, 9 GB at 20 Mbps, or 13.5 GB at 30 Mbps. Those are bitrate-based estimates, not a single universal number published by Microsoft. Your actual total changes with resolution, subscription quality limits, Auto/adaptive streaming, connection quality, device, location, and the complexity of what is on screen.
For a capped mobile plan, the practical implication is significant: a 10 GB allowance could cover roughly 1 hour 29 minutes at 15 Mbps, but less than 45 minutes at 30 Mbps, before normal overhead and variation.
How much data does Xbox Cloud Gaming use per hour?
The amount depends mainly on the stream’s bitrate. The following figures convert published bitrate ceilings into decimal gigabytes per hour, so they are best treated as continuous-use planning limits rather than promises about every session.

| Bitrate | Typical quality or mode | Estimated data per hour | Planning use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 Mbps | Manual 720p HQ | About 3.6 GB/h | Lower-resolution ceiling |
| 15 Mbps | Essential/Premium 1080p | About 6.75 GB/h | Useful mid-range estimate |
| 18 Mbps | Manual 1080p HQ | About 8.1 GB/h | Higher 1080p setting |
| 20 Mbps | 1080p ceiling | About 9 GB/h | Conservative 1080p budget |
| 30 Mbps | Ultimate’s highest-quality stream, up to 1440p | About 13.5 GB/h | High-end budget for the largest listed stream |
| Approximately 5.2 Mbps | Historical Android measurement | About 2.36 GB/h | Older, lower-bitrate example; not a current ceiling |
An Xbox Insider report described 720p, 1080p, and 1440p presets spanning approximately 3 to 14 GB per hour, with an Auto mode that adapts to the connection and device. That range is consistent with the bitrate calculations above, but it should not be read as a fixed consumption rate for every title or platform.

How are the GB-per-hour figures calculated?
Bitrate is measured in megabits per second (Mbps), while data allowances are usually shown in gigabytes. To convert one to the other:
- Multiply the bitrate by 3,600 seconds in an hour.
- Divide by 8 to convert megabits to megabytes.
- Divide by 1,000 to convert megabytes to decimal gigabytes.
The compact formula is Mbps × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = decimal GB per hour. For example, a 15 Mbps stream uses 15 × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = 6.75 GB in an hour if it holds that rate continuously. A 30 Mbps stream uses 13.5 GB under the same assumption.
These are decimal GB calculations (1 GB = 1,000 MB). A phone or carrier may display binary-style GiB values, round usage, or include transport overhead, so its meter will not necessarily match the table exactly.

What makes actual Xbox Cloud Gaming usage higher or lower?
Resolution and quality ceiling
Higher-resolution streams generally require a higher bitrate. The 720p example at 8 Mbps is approximately 3.6 GB per hour, while a 1080p ceiling of 20 Mbps is approximately 9 GB per hour. The highest listed Ultimate quality can reach 30 Mbps and up to 1440p, which raises the planning figure to 13.5 GB per hour.
Auto mode and adaptive bitrate
Auto mode can reduce the stream rate when the network or device cannot sustain the top setting. That lowers data use, although the picture may become softer or show more compression. If the connection improves, the service can raise the rate again, so two sessions of the same length can consume different amounts.

Connection, device, and location
Xbox says performance varies with the connection, location, device, and other factors. A phone on a constrained mobile link may receive a different stream than a console or PC on a fast wired connection. These conditions affect both visual quality and the amount transferred.
On-screen activity and protocol overhead
The bitrate figures describe the video stream’s ceiling. Real traffic also includes audio, control traffic, encryption, and other network overhead. Fast-moving scenes can be harder to compress than static menus, while adaptive encoding may lower the rate during less demanding moments. The result can be below, near, or occasionally around the planning ceiling rather than exactly equal to it.
What internet speed does Xbox recommend?
Xbox’s current FAQ says: “Best performance will be achieved at rates of 10 Mbps on mobile devices, 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets, and 5Ghz WiFi or mobile data connection.” These are connection-speed recommendations, not monthly data allowances.
- Mobile devices: plan for at least 10 Mbps for the best experience.
- Consoles, PCs, and tablets: plan for at least 20 Mbps.
- Wireless: Xbox specifically recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a mobile-data connection.
A faster connection does not automatically force the highest data use. It gives the service room to maintain a higher-quality stream; the selected quality, Auto behavior, device, and network conditions still determine the transferred amount.
How long will a mobile-data allowance last?
Use your allowance divided by the estimated hourly rate. The table below shows uninterrupted play and excludes overhead, background traffic, and any other apps using the same connection.

| Allowance | At 15 Mbps (6.75 GB/h) | At 30 Mbps (13.5 GB/h) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 GB | About 1 hour 29 minutes | About 44 minutes |
| 50 GB | About 7 hours 24 minutes | About 3 hours 42 minutes |
| 100 GB | About 14 hours 49 minutes | About 7 hours 24 minutes |
| 200 GB | About 29 hours 38 minutes | About 14 hours 49 minutes |
For a regular schedule, multiply the hourly estimate by the number of sessions. One hour every day for 30 days at 15 Mbps is about 202.5 GB (6.75 × 30). At 30 Mbps, the same schedule would be about 405 GB. Leave headroom for other phone traffic and for the stream occasionally using a higher rate.

- Identify the likely quality. Check whether your device or subscription is using a 720p, 1080p, or up-to-1440p option, and whether Auto mode is enabled.
- Choose a conservative bitrate. Use 8 Mbps for a lower 720p estimate, 15–20 Mbps for a 1080p planning range, or 30 Mbps for the highest listed quality.
- Calculate session data. Multiply the selected GB-per-hour figure by the number of hours in one session.
- Calculate monthly data. Multiply that session total by the number of sessions per month.
- Add a safety margin. Reserve extra capacity for overhead, adaptive increases, system traffic, and other devices sharing the connection.
Example: someone playing four hours each weekend at a 15 Mbps planning rate would expect roughly 108 GB in a 30-day month if there are eight four-hour sessions? No—four hours each weekend is approximately 16 hours per four-week month, so the estimate is about 108 GB (16 × 6.75). Writing down actual session lengths avoids confusing a weekly total with a daily schedule.
Does 1080p or 1440p use more data?
Usually, yes. A higher-resolution stream carries more picture information and is commonly assigned a higher bitrate. The practical difference is visible in the planning rates:
| Quality example | Bitrate used for estimate | Hourly data | Difference versus 15 Mbps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p HQ | 8 Mbps | 3.6 GB | About 47% less |
| 1080p Essential/Premium | 15 Mbps | 6.75 GB | Baseline |
| 1080p HQ | 18 Mbps | 8.1 GB | About 20% more |
| 1080p ceiling | 20 Mbps | 9 GB | About 33% more |
| Up to 1440p, highest listed quality | 30 Mbps | 13.5 GB | Twice as much |
Resolution alone does not determine the exact total. Auto mode, device limits, network quality, and changing scenes can keep a nominally 1080p or 1440p session below its maximum rate.
How can I reduce data use without abandoning cloud play?
- Prefer Auto or a lower quality preset when a mobile allowance is tight. This gives the service permission to lower bitrate instead of holding the maximum.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a fixed broadband connection when available, keeping capped mobile data for travel.
- Check the device’s data counter after a known session. Compare the measured result with the 3.6–13.5 GB planning range, then adjust your monthly budget to your own pattern.
- Account for every device on a hotspot or home connection. Cloud play may not be the only traffic consuming the cap.
- Set a warning below your carrier’s hard limit. A warning gives you time to switch networks or lower quality before the allowance is exhausted.
Lowering quality trades image detail for capacity. On a small phone screen, that trade may be easier to accept than on a large tablet or television; the best setting is the highest one that fits your allowance and remains stable.

What are the most common data-budget mistakes?
Confusing Mbps with GB
Mbps describes a momentary transfer rate; GB describes accumulated data. A 20 Mbps recommendation does not mean 20 GB per hour. Use the conversion formula rather than treating the numbers as interchangeable.
Budgeting from a speed test alone
A speed test tells you whether the connection can potentially sustain a stream. It does not tell you how much data your carrier or ISP will count over a month. Quality selection and session duration determine the allowance consumed.
Assuming every session reaches the ceiling
The table is a ceiling-oriented planning aid. Adaptive streaming and lower-bitrate sessions can use less; overhead and other traffic can make your meter show more than the video-only calculation.
Ignoring the billing window
Carrier counters may reset on a date that differs from your calendar month, and some round usage. Compare sessions within the same billing period when validating your estimate.
Is Xbox Cloud Gaming practical on a capped plan?
It can be, but the answer depends on your play schedule and the quality you choose. A small 10 GB allowance is suitable for occasional short sessions, not daily high-quality play. A 100 GB allowance can support roughly 15 hours at the 15 Mbps planning rate, but substantially fewer hours at 30 Mbps once other data use is included.

For home broadband, check whether the ISP imposes a monthly cap. For mobile play, calculate your expected hours first, then compare that number with the allowance after reserving data for messaging, video, updates, and every other device sharing the plan. If your calculated total is close to the cap, choose a lower quality or a larger allowance rather than relying on a perfect bitrate estimate.
What does Xbox’s growing cloud use mean for data planning?
Xbox Wire reported that cloud-gaming hours were up 45% year over year as of December 19, 2025. That growth indicates more total cloud play, but it does not establish a different per-hour bitrate or guarantee that an individual session will consume more data. Your own quality setting and connection remain the relevant variables for budgeting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the figures decimal GB or binary GiB?
They are decimal gigabytes, using 1,000 megabytes per gigabyte. A device that reports GiB, rounds aggressively, or combines several network categories can show a slightly different number even when the stream behaves as expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy might my carrier report a different total after one session?
The bitrate conversion excludes some protocol and device overhead, while carrier meters may round traffic or include simultaneous background use. The billing counter’s reset date can also put traffic from other days into the same displayed total.
Does pausing a game stop data transfer completely?
There is no single paused-session rate established here, and behavior can depend on the app and device. Treat an open cloud stream as potentially active until it is closed, then verify the result with your phone or router’s usage meter.
How much hotspot data should I reserve for a two-day gaming weekend?
For four total hours, reserve about 27 GB at the 15 Mbps planning rate or 54 GB at 30 Mbps, then add room for overhead and the other devices using the hotspot. If your schedule is longer, multiply the chosen hourly figure by the total hours before setting a cap.
