For an appetizer before dinner, plan about 1–2 oz (28–57 g) of cheese per person. For a cheese-focused meal, a useful starting range is 4–6 oz (113–170 g) per person, with more reasonable when few other substantial foods are served. A small cheese-and-wine tasting may need about 100–125 g (3.5–4.5 oz) per person; a substantial tasting built around cheese, crackers, and fruit may call for about 250 g (8.8 oz) per person. Multiply the amount for your format by the guest count.
How much cheese per person?
There is no universal portion standard: recommendations depend on whether guests are nibbling before dinner, grazing, tasting several cheeses, or relying on the cheese as a meal. Use the occasion that most closely matches your event rather than applying one figure to every kind of gathering.

These are planning recommendations from the named sources, not population statistics or a formal standard. Academy of Cheese’s figures are from 2025; Good Cheese and Lady & Larder figures are from 2026. BC Dairy’s page is dated approximately 2016; publication dates are not shown for the cited Castello, Dairy Farmers of Canada, and Whole Foods Market recommendations.
How to calculate the total
- Choose the format. Decide whether cheese is an appetizer, a grazing spread, a tasting, or the meal.
- Select a per-person amount. Use the matching range above. Lean toward its lower end when there is plenty of other substantial food and toward its higher end when cheese is central.
- Multiply by the guest count. For example, 12 guests at 2 oz each require 24 oz, or 1.5 lb, total. At 4 oz each, 12 guests require 48 oz, or 3 lb. These totals are arithmetic from the planning amounts, not separate published recommendations.
- Divide the total among the cheeses. For example, 3 lb split evenly across four varieties is 12 oz of each. The variety count does not increase the total amount needed.
How much should accompaniments change the amount?
There is no established fixed percentage to subtract for crackers, fruit, meat, or other food. Treat plentiful accompaniments as a reason to choose the lower end of the range, not as a formula. The substantial tasting guidance from BC Dairy and Dairy Farmers of Canada still calls for about 250 g per person even with crackers and fruit included, so a lighter tasting and a substantial cheese-centered tasting should not be treated as interchangeable.

How many cheeses should you buy?
Three to five varieties is a practical assortment for a party board or tasting, according to Good Cheese and Academy of Cheese. Divide the total planned weight across those varieties according to how much choice you want; do not multiply the per-person total by the number of cheeses.
For variety, an Academy of Cheese example includes hard aged, semi-soft, blue, and bloomy-rind cheeses, with goat’s-milk cheese as an option. This is one possible mix, not a required checklist. Does a serving board affect how much cheese to buy?
No. A board can make presentation easier, but portion planning is based on the amount of cheese and the event format, not on whether you own a serving board. Buy or borrow one only if it suits the way you plan to serve the cheese.
