MSPs make money with AI in two connected ways: they use automation to deliver existing services at a lower cost, and they sell implementation, governance, security, integration and ongoing operations that customers cannot easily provide themselves. The opportunity is real but not automatic. In Kaseya’s 2026 survey of more than 1,000 MSPs worldwide, 48% ranked AI and automation as their clients’ top need, while only 13% reported meaningful revenue from those services (Kaseya, April 14, 2026). The practical path is to start with a measurable workflow, set human and security boundaries, and charge for a defined business result rather than for vague “AI transformation.”

What does “making money with AI” mean for an MSP?

For a managed service provider, AI revenue is not limited to reselling a model or chatbot. It can mean more profitable delivery of help-desk, patching, monitoring and reporting work; project fees for preparing data and integrating tools; recurring administration of AI-enabled processes; or security and resilience services that become more important as clients adopt AI.

The market signals show a gap between interest and monetization. Kaseya found that 53% of surveyed MSPs were already using AI to automate ticketing, patching and monitoring, but more than half had automated only about one quarter of their workload. Those are vendor-survey adoption figures, not a promise of a particular margin increase for your company. The same report recorded year-over-year growth in cybersecurity at 71% of respondents and in business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) at 50%; the survey did not establish that AI caused either category’s growth.

Use the figures as a reason to test an offer, not as proof that every MSP will profit. A viable offer has a named owner, a repeatable scope, a baseline, a measurable outcome and a plan for exceptions that still require people.

How can internal AI efficiency improve an MSP’s profit?

Internal automation can raise gross margin before you sell a branded AI service. If a technician handles more standardized work in the same paid hours, you can improve response times, absorb client growth or delay additional hiring while keeping service quality within agreed limits.

Where to apply it first

  • Classify and route incoming tickets, suggest replies and summarize incidents for the assigned technician.
  • Automate routine patching, monitoring alerts, maintenance checks and evidence collection, with approval gates for risky changes.
  • Draft documentation, post-incident reports, customer updates and recurring service reviews from verified system data.
  • Detect duplicate requests, missing information and likely escalations before work reaches a senior engineer.

Start with deterministic automation where the action and rollback are clear. Use a model for summarization, classification or drafting, then require a person to approve changes that can affect availability, security or regulated data.

How to prove the economic effect

Record a baseline for at least one representative workflow. Track average handling time, first-response time, escalation rate, rework, reopened tickets and cost per endpoint or user. After deployment, compare the same measures by client and ticket type. A faster draft that creates more rework is not a saving, and a lower ticket count caused by deferred work is not a service improvement. Kaseya’s report provides directional evidence of adoption, but it does not publish a universal ROI percentage.

How should an MSP sell AI readiness and governance?

Many customers need help deciding where AI is safe and useful before they need a complicated implementation. Sell a bounded assessment and roadmap, then follow with configuration and recurring oversight.

What the readiness engagement includes

  1. Inventory. Map business processes, data stores, identity systems, current software and any unapproved (“shadow”) AI use.
  2. Prioritization. Score candidate use cases by customer pain, repeatability, data sensitivity, integration effort, human-review needs and measurable value.
  3. Controls. Define who can access data, what may be sent to an AI service, retention rules, logging, approval thresholds and an escalation path.
  4. Implementation plan. Specify interfaces, data preparation, testing, staff training, change management and a rollback procedure.
  5. Operating review. Schedule checks for quality, access, usage cost, policy exceptions and business outcomes.

KPMG’s Managed Services Outlook Survey 2026 identifies integration complexity, cross-functional data governance, long-term costs and uncertain ROI as deployment friction points. Its ranked buyer capabilities include data insights and analytics, security and threat intelligence, automation and efficiency, cloud application optimization, and security monitoring and incident management (KPMG, 2026). Those needs support a paid, process-specific roadmap rather than an open-ended promise to “make the business AI-ready.”

How to package the work

Separate the assessment from implementation so the customer can stop after receiving a useful decision. Price the configuration, testing and enablement as a project; offer a recurring governance review for policy changes, access recertification, model or prompt changes, incident handling and cost reporting. Document what is excluded, such as custom model training or remediation of unrelated data-quality problems.

Can managed AI-enabled workflows create recurring revenue?

Yes, when the MSP owns an ongoing operational layer rather than handing over a one-time automation. The recurring service can administer integrations, monitor quality and usage, maintain access and data rules, handle exceptions and report whether the workflow is meeting its target.

Define the managed service boundary

  • Responsibilities: list systems monitored, automations maintained, approved changes and support hours.
  • Service levels: state response and restoration targets for failed integrations, inaccurate outputs and blocked queues.
  • Human escalation: identify decisions that always require a named customer or MSP employee.
  • Change control: require testing and customer approval for new data sources, actions or model versions.
  • Reporting: show volume, success rate, exception rate, latency, usage cost and business KPI movement.

IDC describes managed platforms that automate monitoring, triage, root-cause analysis and remediation within defined boundaries. KPMG likewise points to integration, governance and long-term operating costs as areas where customers need assistance. Neither source establishes that fully autonomous agents are safe for every task, so keep automated actions constrained and reversible (IDC, June 12, 2026).

Examples of repeatable scope

An MSP might operate an AI-assisted service-desk queue, maintain a document-processing workflow with human approval, or manage a reporting pipeline that reconciles data from several business systems. The specific process should come from discovery; do not sell the same automation to every client regardless of their systems or risk profile.

How can AI security and resilience become an MSP service?

AI adoption adds security work around identity, data exposure, monitoring, incident response and business continuity. Attach that work to established managed security and BCDR services instead of presenting AI security as a disconnected product.

OpenText Cybersecurity’s September 2025 survey covered 1,019 MSP managers, executives, security professionals and customer-relationship managers in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. It reported that fewer than half had built or deployed AI cybersecurity agents for SMB customers and described customer preference for bundled security. The survey is vendor-sponsored and regional, so use it to frame demand and readiness gaps rather than to claim a universal adoption rate (OpenText Cybersecurity, September 24, 2025).

Do not attribute the Kaseya-reported security or BCDR revenue growth to AI. The defensible commercial argument is adjacency: clients already buying protection and recovery need those controls extended to AI-enabled systems.

How can an MSP integrate tools around a measurable client workflow?

The fifth play is to sell the outcome of a connected process, not an isolated license. An MSP can clean data, connect applications, automate appropriate steps and operate the handoffs that internal teams struggle to maintain.

Choose a process with evidence of waste

Look for repetitive work that crosses systems: service-desk intake and reporting, document handling, finance or operations back-office tasks, or recurring customer communications. Establish current volume, cycle time, error or rework rate, labor cost and any compliance requirement before selecting technology.

Compare implementation options

Decision factor Questions to answer
Process fit Does the workflow have stable rules and a clear owner?
Integration effort Are supported interfaces available, and who maintains them when systems change?
Data sensitivity What information is processed, where is it stored, and how is access logged?
Human review Which outputs need approval, and what happens when confidence is low?
Operating cost How do usage, storage, API calls and exception handling vary with volume?
Outcome measurement Can the customer verify time saved, faster completion, fewer errors or another agreed KPI?

OpenText reported that integrating tools was the top stated priority among MSPs developing new services. KPMG’s buyer findings support the same focus on analytics, automation, cloud optimization and security. Integration work can therefore be a durable service line when the MSP remains accountable for the process and its handoffs, rather than simply forwarding a software subscription.

Recurring scope Monitoring, updates, access reviews and exception handling remain necessary All work ends when a connector is installed
Variable cost Usage can be metered and passed through transparently Chained or unpredictable usage can erase the margin

How should MSPs price AI services and prove value?

There is no established universal price in the available evidence. IDC reported that 55% of surveyed IT buyers expected AI-powered managed services to cost more than traditional providers, while 37% expected prices to fall. The split reflects two legitimate forces: governance and orchestration can justify a premium, while automation can reduce the provider’s cost per unit of work.

Amar Aswatha of CGI describes outcome, consumption and gain-sharing models as having different trade-offs, and argues that a hybrid can combine a predictable base fee, usage-related variable costs and incentives tied to measurable outcomes. He also notes that attribution and unpredictable chained usage complicate outcome pricing. That is expert opinion, not a settled market standard (TechRadar Pro, October 20, 2026).

Commercial controls to put in every proposal

  1. Write the baseline and target KPI, including the measurement period and data source.
  2. Separate setup, recurring management and pass-through usage costs.
  3. Set limits or approval thresholds for variable consumption.
  4. Define excluded work, human escalation and liability boundaries.
  5. Review results and pricing at an agreed interval, then adjust scope using actual volume and exception data.

For a new service, a fixed assessment or implementation fee is usually easier to explain than an unbounded promise. A recurring base can cover administration, with metered usage or a carefully defined incentive added only when the customer can verify the result.

What does a practical 90-day launch look like?

A short, controlled pilot gives the MSP evidence for packaging without committing to broad autonomy.

  1. Days 1–15: interview the service owner, map one workflow, identify data and security constraints, and capture baseline metrics.
  2. Days 16–30: select the narrowest useful automation, document approvals and rollback, estimate variable usage and obtain customer sign-off.
  3. Days 31–60: build in a test environment, run representative cases, log failures and train the people who will review outputs.
  4. Days 61–75: release to a limited queue or user group, monitor quality and cost daily, and keep a manual path available.
  5. Days 76–90: compare results with the baseline, remove unsafe steps, calculate delivery cost, and decide whether the offer is repeatable enough for a recurring service.

What can make an AI MSP offer unprofitable?

  • Underpricing a custom integration whose maintenance effort grows with every client.
  • Ignoring data cleanup, identity work, testing and change management because the model demo looked simple.
  • Allowing unlimited usage when chained calls or exception volume are unpredictable.
  • Automating decisions without a human escalation route, audit trail or rollback.
  • Claiming savings without measuring rework, quality and customer outcomes.
  • Assuming a survey result from one geography or vendor population applies to every MSP.

The UK government-commissioned 2025 market study provides sector context for the United Kingdom, but it is not evidence of global AI monetization. Likewise, KPMG’s 2026 outlook draws on 1,224 senior leaders globally, including 304 US executives; each survey should be read within its stated population rather than generalized to every market (UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology / Frontier Economics, May 1, 2025).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do MSPs need to build their own AI model to sell AI services?

No. Most opportunities described here involve configuring existing services, connecting customer systems and operating a controlled workflow. The differentiator is reliable delivery, governance and measurable outcomes, not ownership of a foundation model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can a small MSP start without hiring a data-science team?

Choose one repeatable process with low-risk data, use vendor-supported interfaces, and focus initial staff training on workflow design, access control, testing and exception handling. Bring in specialist help for unusual data, compliance or model-development requirements instead of making those capabilities part of every project.

Should AI usage costs be included in an MSP’s fixed monthly fee?

Only when volume is predictable and the provider has enough margin for peak usage and exceptions. Otherwise, show a base management fee plus a transparent usage allowance or variable charge, with approval thresholds that prevent surprise bills.

What contract language matters most for a managed AI workflow?

Specify permitted data, retention, subprocessors, service levels, human approvals, change control, incident notification, usage limits, ownership of outputs and the customer’s exit or data-export process. These clauses turn an experimental automation into an operable service.
