In a Microsoft Design article published October 5, 2026, author Lucas Fitzpatrick describes the redesign as a response to Copilot’s shift toward a more active, interactive experience—and to the icon’s inconsistent appearance across locations. The stated goal is to make the mark feel at home in that interaction, not to claim a measured improvement in usability.
Why Microsoft changed the Copilot icon
Microsoft says the previous icon stayed still while Copilot was becoming a more active experience. Its appearance also varied across places where people encountered it. The design team saw an opportunity to use shape, color, and motion to help communicate what happens between a user’s question and Copilot’s response.
That led to the question behind the redesign: “What if the icon could join the conversation?” The phrase describes Microsoft’s design intention: an icon that can signal activity rather than serve only as a static identifier.
What the new Copilot icon means
Two forms make one mark
The new mark is built from two distinct forms that create a single silhouette. They can move in relation to one another while remaining connected, expressing Microsoft’s idea of separate pieces coming together into something more useful and harmonious.

A square designed to stay readable in motion
Microsoft says the team returned to the square, a familiar shape in its visual language, because the mark needed to remain legible as it moved. As the article puts it, “A shape in motion has to stay readable in every frame, so we went back to one of the simplest, most familiar shapes in Microsoft’s visual language: the square.”
Typography and color
The wordmark combines Segoe and Segoe Serif. Microsoft says the sans-serif keeps the name open and easy to read, while the serif adds personality. The color system maintains a connection to Copilot’s original gradient while allowing colors to shift and blend across contexts.

What the Copilot icon’s animations show
Microsoft describes three motion states, using the same two forms for each gesture:
- Thinking: Copilot is working through a request.
- Planning: Copilot is organizing next steps.
- Retrieval: Copilot is pulling context from the user’s files and work.
The purpose, in Microsoft’s account, is to give the icon a way to signal different kinds of activity. The article does not report independent usability tests or measured evidence that viewers interpret the states more accurately.

How the motion is meant to work across Microsoft products
Microsoft says the gestures form a shared motion language across the Copilot ecosystem. The intended effect is continuity: an icon encountered in Windows should feel familiar when it appears again in Word or PowerPoint. That is a design goal described by Microsoft, not a reported measurement of how users respond across those products.
How Microsoft developed the redesign
The article describes months of work by brand, product, and motion designers, with collaborators from COLLINS, Koto, and Microsoft. The team tested color and form on screens, in print, and on physical materials. It printed icons to see how they held up on paper and iterated on the weight of a curve. Microsoft does not provide a complete team roster or assign individual roles to those collaborators.

Fitzpatrick captures the time involved in the process this way: “There’s an irony in this process. Copilot can work through a request in seconds. Deciding how those seconds should look and feel took a room of brand, product, and motion designers months.”

The redesign gives Copilot a mark intended to communicate activity through motion, while using connected forms, familiar geometry, a combined wordmark, and an evolving gradient to create a consistent identity. The Microsoft Design article explains those choices and the process behind them, but it provides no named statistics, user-test results, or measured performance outcomes. Claims that the new icon improves comprehension or usability would go beyond what Microsoft reports.
