Microsoft Copilot Voice is a live, two-way spoken conversation: you speak through a microphone, Copilot responds aloud, and you can interrupt, mute, or end the session. Depending on the Copilot experience and account, it may use web search, connected Microsoft Graph work context, and memories already saved in personalization settings. That is not evidence of unrestricted access to your device or every file. Voice-chat audio and conversation transcripts are handled differently, and the Windows “Hey Copilot” wake feature has a separate, opt-in listening path.

Copilot Voice, dictation, and Read aloud are different features

Microsoft uses similar voice controls for three different jobs. Knowing which one is active helps explain what is sent and what kind of response to expect. Microsoft describes these distinctions in its voice feature guide.

Feature What it does Audio behavior described by Microsoft
Copilot Voice A real-time conversation: you speak, Copilot responds with speech, and you can interrupt or manage the session. Uses the microphone for the active conversation. Microsoft’s voice FAQ says ordinary voice-chat audio is not stored, subject to the feedback exception described below.
Dictation Converts your spoken input into text for a prompt or other written input; it is not a spoken back-and-forth conversation. For work or school accounts, Microsoft says dictation speech is sent to Microsoft for conversion and is not stored by that dictation service.
Read aloud Speaks a written Copilot response instead of conducting a live conversation. Microsoft says it uses client-side text-to-speech and does not record or store audio.

How to start, control, and end a voice chat

  1. Open Copilot Chat and select the Voice icon. If the browser or device asks for microphone access, allow it to start speaking. Microsoft notes that the prompt may appear the first time you use voice.
  2. Wait for the audio greeting, then speak naturally. Copilot processes speech and responds aloud; you can interrupt while it is speaking.
  3. Use the microphone control to mute listening and resume it when needed. End the conversation when finished; ending the session stops its active listening.

Sessions may disconnect after inactivity or when a service limit is reached. Background speech or noise can also be picked up during an active session, so use a quieter place for sensitive or accuracy-dependent conversations. Microsoft cautions that Copilot answers can be inaccurate; check consequential information before acting on it. See Microsoft’s voice FAQ.

What Copilot Voice may access

Access depends on the Copilot product, account, and connected services. Microsoft’s FAQ says voice chat may search the web and, in supported work scenarios, use context from Microsoft Graph. Examples include calendar summaries, inbox triage, meeting details, and document or information tasks. Existing memories saved in personalization settings may also inform a voice chat.

  • Background noise-reducing microphone.
  • High-quality stereo speakers optimized for voice.
  • Mute control with status light. Easily see, at a glance, whether you can be heard or not.
  • Convenient call controls, including mute, volume, and the Teams button, are in-line and easy to reach.
  • Web: Voice chat may search the web to answer a request.
  • Work context: A supported work experience may ground responses in Microsoft Graph information such as email, calendar, meetings, and documents.
  • Saved memories: Copilot may use memories already saved in personalization settings. Manage those memories in settings; Microsoft’s FAQ says they cannot be edited during the voice session.

These examples describe context available through supported Copilot services. They do not establish blanket access to all files, apps, or contents on your device. Availability also varies with account type, licensing or subscription, geography, platform, and rollout; Microsoft’s FAQ advises checking the current experience for eligibility.

“Hey Copilot” is a separate Windows wake feature

The Windows wake phrase is not the same as an active voice conversation. Microsoft’s wake-word guidance says “Hey Copilot” is off by default, must be enabled in the Windows Copilot app settings, and works only while the app is running, including minimized or in the background.

  • Before activation, Windows detects the English wake phrase locally using a 10-second audio buffer in memory. Microsoft says, “That buffer is never recorded or stored.”
  • After detecting the phrase, the app opens voice chat and sends audio from that point to the Copilot voice service. Windows indicates microphone use in the system tray.
  • The wake phrase does not start a chat while the screen is locked or while another app is playing audio. The ensuing conversation can use a supported language even though the wake phrase itself works in English.
  • Microsoft warns that accent or language variation may cause accidental activation, and background noise can keep an already active chat listening.

To disable it, open the Copilot app on Windows, go to Settings, and turn off the “Hey Copilot” wake-word setting. The feature is narrower in availability than Copilot Voice itself.

How voice audio and transcripts are handled

Microsoft’s current voice FAQ says, “No user or Copilot audio is stored” during ordinary voice chats. The same FAQ qualifies that statement: if feedback is enabled, conversation audio may be retained temporarily to support feedback and is deleted after 48 hours. That retained audio may include background sounds.

Transcripts are different from audio recordings. Microsoft says voice-chat transcripts are handled like other Copilot conversation history, so applicable account and privacy controls matter. Microsoft’s consumer privacy FAQ says conversation history is saved by default and retained for 18 months, with deletion controls; that consumer setting should not be assumed to govern work or school accounts. Microsoft’s privacy-controls page also flags that some instructions apply only to an older app version. For work and school use, check the applicable Microsoft 365 data-protection terms and current account controls.

Check privacy and availability settings before using Voice

  • Microphone permission: Review the browser or device permission if voice will not start, or if you want to revoke access outside a session.
  • Windows wake phrase: Confirm the “Hey Copilot” setting is off unless you want the local wake listener available while the Windows app is running.
  • Memory and personalization: Review or remove saved memories in Copilot personalization settings if you do not want them influencing answers.
  • Training controls: Microsoft’s consumer privacy controls provide separate settings for conversation activity and voice conversations. Consumer and work/school accounts are governed by different terms, so review the control for the account you actually use rather than generalizing one setting to every Copilot product.
  • Account and rollout: Confirm the feature is available for your platform, region, account type, and subscription; Microsoft says availability can change with licensing and phased release.
