Meta is spending at hyperscaler scale, but its announced budget is not an AI-only figure. The company reported $69.69 billion in 2025 purchases of property and equipment and guided to $115 billion–$135 billion in 2026 capital expenditures for both AI efforts and its core business. On a separate, dated estimate series, Amazon leads the four companies in projected 2026 capex; those figures are forecasts, not company guidance. The comparison depends on whether you count cash equipment purchases or broader capex, and whether a number is an actual, a forecast, or an AI-specific allocation.
How much is Meta spending on AI infrastructure?
Meta reported $69.69 billion of purchases of property and equipment in 2025, mostly for servers, data centers, and network infrastructure. For 2026, it expects capital expenditures of approximately $115 billion to $135 billion “to support our AI efforts and core business,” according to its 2025 SEC filing. The guidance is therefore a combined infrastructure and business-spending forecast, not a breakdown of how much is exclusively for AI.
That distinction matters when comparing Meta with peers. A headline figure can describe cash purchases, broader capital expenditures that include leases, or an analyst estimate. Those measures are related, but they are not interchangeable. The numbers below should be read as different views of an infrastructure buildout—not as four audited, AI-only budgets.
Which company has the largest 2026 capex estimate?
In Morningstar’s comparison of FactSet consensus estimates available as of October 29, 2025, Amazon has the largest 2026 estimate, at $127.551 billion. Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet follow closely, with estimates from about $93 billion to $97 billion. These are external consensus forecasts, not a single set of company-issued guidance.

| Company | 2026 FactSet consensus estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | $127.551 billion | Estimate reproduced by Morningstar; not company guidance |
| Meta | $96.972 billion | Estimate reproduced by Morningstar; differs from Meta’s later or company-issued guidance |
| Microsoft | $95.991 billion | Estimate reproduced by Morningstar; differs from Microsoft’s company outlook |
| Alphabet | $92.904 billion | Estimate reproduced by Morningstar; not company guidance |
The estimate series is useful because it puts all four companies into one dated comparison. It is not a definitive ranking of what each will spend: consensus can change, and each company’s accounting and fiscal calendar affect the figures analysts compare. In particular, Microsoft’s own calendar-2026 outlook is substantially higher than its Morningstar-reproduced FactSet estimate, illustrating why a forecast table needs a stated source and date.
What have the companies reported or said they will spend?
Company disclosures supply a different set of comparisons: reported figures for completed periods and management guidance for future periods. The table keeps those categories separate rather than treating an actual, a quarterly figure, and a forecast as equivalent.
| Company | Reported figure | Forward-looking figure | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta | $69.69 billion in 2025 purchases of property and equipment | $115 billion–$135 billion in 2026 capital expenditures | The 2026 guidance supports AI efforts and the core business; it is not AI-only. |
| Alphabet (Google) | $91.4 billion in 2025 capex | 2026 technical-infrastructure investment expected to increase significantly | The 2025 figure is reported in Alphabet’s SEC filing. The 2026 statement is a directional outlook, not a published dollar range in the cited filing. |
| Microsoft | $41 billion of capex in FY2026 Q4, including $35.8 billion of cash property-and-equipment purchases | Approximately $175 billion of calendar-2026 capex after a lease reclassification | The quarterly capex figure includes finance leases; about two-thirds of that quarter’s capex was short-lived CPUs and GPUs. The calendar-year outlook is a different period and measure. |
| Amazon | $127.551 billion 2026 estimate | FactSet consensus reproduced by Morningstar as of October 29, 2025; not Amazon guidance. |
For Alphabet, the SEC filing reports $91.4 billion of 2025 capex and says technical-infrastructure investment will increase significantly in 2026. Earlier, Alphabet’s Q2 2025 call raised its 2025 outlook to approximately $85 billion and described cloud-capacity demand as tight. The later reported 2025 figure is the actual for that year; the earlier $85 billion was an outlook, not an additional amount to add to it.
Microsoft’s disclosures demonstrate how much a definition can change the apparent scale. In its FY2026 Q4 call, the company reported $41 billion of quarterly capex, while cash purchases of property and equipment were $35.8 billion. Management said roughly two-thirds of capex was for short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs. Those purchases can be part of infrastructure investment even though their accounting treatment and useful lives differ from long-lived data-center facilities.

Why don’t the reported AI spending numbers match?
There is no single reporting line that makes all four companies’ AI infrastructure spending directly comparable. A reader must check four things: whether the amount is actual or forecast, what spending measure it uses, whether it covers AI alone or the broader business, and which year or fiscal period it covers.
Actual spending and forecasts answer different questions
A reported figure describes a completed reporting period under a company’s accounting. Guidance communicates management’s expectation for a future period, while analyst consensus aggregates external expectations and can differ from management’s own outlook. Meta’s 2025 equipment purchases and 2026 guidance, for example, cannot be read as a year-over-year change in a single, fixed measure without accounting for the change from reported purchases to broader capex.
Cash purchases are not always the same as capex
Microsoft’s $41 billion quarterly capex included finance leases; its cash property-and-equipment purchases were $35.8 billion. A broader capex measure can therefore be larger than cash paid for equipment and property in that period. The figures describe different accounting views of investment, not necessarily different physical projects.

Meta explicitly ties its 2026 range to AI and its core business. Alphabet’s disclosures emphasize technical infrastructure, while Microsoft’s quarterly description identifies a large share of spending as CPUs and GPUs. These details show how infrastructure supports AI workloads, but they do not provide an apples-to-apples dollar total for AI alone across all four firms. Avoid labeling a company’s whole capex figure “AI spending” unless the company has defined it that way.

Fiscal and calendar periods do not line up automatically
Microsoft’s $41 billion figure covers FY2026 Q4, while its approximately $175 billion expectation is for calendar 2026. Calendar-year FactSet estimates, company fiscal-year results, and quarter-level disclosures cannot be added or ranked as if they cover the same time span. Always retain the period attached to a number.
Why did Microsoft’s 2026 capex expectation change?
Microsoft’s FY2026 Q3 call expected roughly $190 billion of calendar-2026 capex. Its later FY2026 Q4 call put the expectation at approximately $175 billion after a lease reclassification. The change in the reported expectation should not be interpreted as an equivalent reduction in the physical infrastructure Microsoft intends to build: the company attributed it to how leases were classified.
This is also why the $95.991 billion Microsoft figure in the Morningstar/FactSet table should not be substituted for management’s approximately $175 billion outlook. The two figures come from different sources and outlooks. A useful comparison identifies the source and definition first, rather than selecting whichever number makes a company appear larger or smaller.
Is Meta spending more on AI data centers than Google?
The available figures do not establish that Meta’s AI-only spending is higher than Google’s: Meta’s range combines AI and core-business needs, while Alphabet’s disclosures provide total capex and a directional 2026 infrastructure outlook rather than an AI-only dollar amount. For 2025, Alphabet reported $91.4 billion of capex, compared with Meta’s $69.69 billion of property-and-equipment purchases; these are not identical measures.

In the dated 2026 consensus series, Meta’s estimate is $96.972 billion and Alphabet’s is $92.904 billion. That is a comparison of analyst estimates, not a statement that Meta will spend more on AI or that the eventual actuals will follow the ranking. Alphabet had already said cloud-capacity demand remained tight during its Q2 2025 call, while its SEC filing projected significantly higher technical-infrastructure investment in 2026.
What does the spending race mean for data-center capacity?
The spending totals represent more than a contest to buy accelerators. The companies’ buildout depends on obtaining data-center land, energy, networking, and chips. Those constraints make capex a capacity race: a large budget signals planned investment, but it does not by itself show how much usable computing capacity will be delivered, when it will come online, or what share will serve AI.
Stanford’s AI Index 2026 reports that Google and Amazon led annual capex among major hyperscalers in 2025 and that hyperscaler annual capex more than doubled since ChatGPT’s release. Its chart marks 2025 and 2026 values as estimates, so it is most useful for the broad trend rather than as a replacement for company filings. The Associated Press summarized the four companies’ 2026 plans as up to $720 billion, primarily for AI data centers. That is a combined press summary, not a single audited measure: company periods and definitions differ, and “up to” describes an upper-end aggregate.

Use a consistent reading order whenever a company announces a new number. This prevents a quarterly cash figure from being compared with a calendar-year estimate or a broad infrastructure budget from being relabeled as AI-only spending.

- Identify the period. Record the fiscal quarter, fiscal year, or calendar year exactly as stated.
- Identify the measure. Check whether the number is cash property-and-equipment purchases or broader capex that includes finance leases.
- Identify the status. Mark it as a reported actual, management guidance, or an analyst estimate, and retain the estimate date when one is provided.
- Check the scope. Look for an explicit AI-only allocation. If the company describes AI plus core business or technical infrastructure, preserve that broader description.
- Compare like with like. Use a common period and measure for rankings; otherwise present the figures separately with their qualifications.
Applied to the current disclosures, that approach yields three distinct kinds of evidence: reported 2025 spending for Meta and Alphabet, a Microsoft quarter and a revised calendar-year outlook, and a dated 2026 consensus estimate for Amazon. Each helps describe the investment race, but none alone supplies a perfectly comparable four-company total for AI infrastructure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Meta report an exact dollar amount spent only on AI?
The cited 2025 filing gives a combined 2026 capex range for AI efforts and the core business, not a separate AI allocation. It also reports property-and-equipment purchases for 2025, rather than a standalone AI-only total.
Why is Microsoft’s FactSet estimate so different from its company outlook?
The figures come from different sources: Morningstar reproduced a FactSet consensus estimate dated October 29, 2025, while Microsoft later discussed its own calendar-2026 expectation. Forecast dates and definitions can produce substantially different totals.
