Meta funds its AI infrastructure primarily with cash generated by its advertising business, then supplements that operating cash with debt and long-term leases. In 2025, Meta generated $115.8 billion in cash from operations, spent $72.22 billion on capital expenditures, and raised $29.91 billion in net proceeds from notes issued in November. Its model combines owned servers and facilities with leased and colocated capacity, while public filings report chip and server spending in aggregate rather than by accelerator model or supplier.
That distinction matters: Meta is not simply paying one cloud bill. It is financing a multiyear physical build-out that includes AI servers, networking, data centers, power and cooling, plus the lease commitments needed to expand capacity faster than owned construction alone would allow.
What is the short answer to how Meta pays for AI infrastructure?
Meta’s advertising operation is the primary financial engine. Advertising across its Family of Apps produces the recurring revenue that becomes operating cash, and that cash is available for servers, facilities, networks and other capital projects after ordinary business expenses. The company then uses capital-market borrowing and lease arrangements to spread a very large, multiyear investment over time.

The 2025 Form 10-K reported $115.8 billion of cash provided by operating activities. It also reported $29.91 billion of net proceeds from notes issued in November 2025. Debt increases near-term funding capacity but creates interest and refinancing obligations; leases provide access to facilities and equipment while committing Meta to payments over future years.

Meta does not publish a separate “AI wallet” funded only by advertising. Its reported infrastructure totals support both AI efforts and the core business, so the figures should be read as company-wide capacity spending with AI as a major stated driver.
How much is Meta spending on infrastructure?
Meta’s reported spending has risen sharply, and its 2026 figure is a plan rather than a completed result.
| Year | Reported or guided amount | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | $39.23 billion | Capital expenditures reported in the 2024 Form 10-K; property-and-equipment purchases were $37.26 billion, focused on servers, data centers and network infrastructure. |
| 2025 | $72.22 billion | Capital expenditures, including purchases of property and equipment and principal payments on finance leases. Property-and-equipment purchases alone were $69.69 billion. |
| 2026 | Approximately $115 billion–$135 billion | Management guidance to support AI efforts and the core business; this is not yet an actual full-year result. |
The cleanest trend is therefore $39.23 billion of capex in 2024, $72.22 billion in 2025 and a $115 billion–$135 billion plan for 2026. The comparison is useful but not perfectly like-for-like: the first two figures are reported results, while 2026 is guidance, and the capex definition includes finance-lease principal payments.
Meta’s investor-relations release accompanying its 2024 results said infrastructure costs were expected to be the single largest driver of 2025 expense growth and repeated the $60 billion–$65 billion 2025 capex outlook. The later 2025 filing shows that actual 2025 capex reached $72.22 billion, above that earlier expectation.
Where does the money come from before Meta spends it?
Operating cash from advertising
Meta earns substantially all of its revenue from advertising on its apps. Those sales are collected from advertisers and converted into operating cash after paying employees, content and infrastructure operating costs, taxes and other obligations. The $115.8 billion of operating cash reported for 2025 is therefore the broad internal funding pool—not a line item reserved exclusively for AI.
Using operating cash reduces dependence on outside financing and lets Meta fund purchases as cash arrives. It also means infrastructure competes with other uses of cash, such as research, employee compensation, acquisitions, taxes and shareholder-related decisions.
Debt financing
In November 2025, Meta issued notes that produced $29.91 billion in net proceeds, according to the 2025 Form 10-K. Borrowing lets the company pay for assets whose useful lives and economic benefits extend across many years instead of requiring all construction and equipment purchases to be funded from one year’s operating cash.

The trade-off is contractual: principal must eventually be repaid, and interest must be paid regardless of whether a new AI service generates the expected return. Debt also exposes Meta to refinancing conditions when maturities come due. The filing identifies the proceeds, but it does not assign a particular portion of those notes to a specific data center, chip generation or server order.
Leases and other capacity commitments
Leasing supplies another form of financing and capacity access. As of December 31, 2025, Meta disclosed approximately $103.77 billion of lease obligations that had not yet commenced. Most related to data centers, colocations and network infrastructure; the leases were scheduled to begin mainly between 2026 and 2030 and to run from more than one year to as long as 30 years.
These commitments are not the same as cash already spent. They represent future contractual payments for capacity that will come online under the stated schedules. They can accelerate expansion without waiting for every facility to be built and owned by Meta, but they reduce flexibility if demand, technology or power availability changes.
What does Meta’s infrastructure capex actually buy?
The filings identify servers, data centers and network infrastructure as the main uses of property-and-equipment purchases. An AI deployment needs all three categories, not just accelerator chips.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Servers: complete computing systems that can contain accelerators, host processors, memory, storage, power supplies and internal connections.
- Networking: switches, cables, optical links and related systems that connect thousands of servers so they can operate as a training or inference cluster.
- Data centers: buildings or dedicated suites, racks, physical security and the electrical distribution needed to house equipment.
- Power and cooling: electrical capacity, backup systems, heat removal and environmental controls required to run dense computing equipment continuously.
- Finance-lease principal: principal payments on qualifying finance leases included in Meta’s reported capex measure for 2025.
Because a large AI cluster is a system, a lower chip price would not eliminate the cost of networking, construction, electricity delivery, cooling or installation. Conversely, adding servers can require upgrades to every surrounding layer.
Does Meta buy its own AI capacity or rent it?
Meta uses a hybrid model. It buys servers and network equipment and invests in data-center infrastructure, while also committing to colocated and leased facilities. The disclosed $103.77 billion of future lease obligations shows that leased capacity is financially material, not a minor supplement.
“Cloud capacity” needs careful wording here. Meta’s filings support leased and colocated infrastructure, but they do not establish that the company relies on a public-cloud service in the same way a startup might rent virtual machines by the hour. A precise description is that Meta combines owned infrastructure with long-term leased and colocated capacity.

Why use leases and colocations?
- Faster deployment: an existing or partially completed facility can become available sooner than a greenfield site.
- Geographic reach: colocations can place computing and network equipment near major traffic hubs.
- Capital pacing: payments are distributed over the lease term instead of requiring the full building cost upfront.
- Capacity risk: long contracts can leave Meta paying for space or power that becomes less useful if workloads or hardware change.
Owned facilities offer more direct control over design and long-term economics, but they require large upfront construction and equipment spending. The hybrid approach balances speed, control and financial flexibility rather than choosing one model exclusively.
How much does Meta spend on AI chips specifically?
Public filings do not provide a complete chip-by-chip spending breakdown. They do not list a full table of accelerator models, quantities, supplier contracts or per-chip prices. The reported $69.69 billion of 2025 property-and-equipment purchases covers the broader physical stack, so it cannot be treated as a chip budget.
The most defensible explanation is that chips are components inside servers purchased for computing capacity. Their total economic cost also includes host systems, memory, networking, installation, power and cooling, and the depreciation or lease expense recognized as the equipment is used. Any claim about a precise number of accelerators or a specific supplier would require separate primary documentation not contained in Meta’s filing totals.
Why does Meta disclose infrastructure in aggregate?
Financial statements are designed to show material asset categories and cash flows, not every bill of materials. A chip-level inventory would also change quickly as Meta qualifies new designs, reallocates equipment among sites and negotiates confidential supply contracts. Aggregate disclosure tells investors how much physical capacity the company is building, but not the exact composition of every cluster.
Why is the 2026 spending plan so much larger?
Meta said it expects approximately $115 billion–$135 billion of 2026 capital expenditures to support its AI efforts and core business. The range indicates a planned acceleration, but it is not a promise that every dollar will be spent or that all of it will become productive capacity immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA build-out of this scale can require several expenditures to occur together: long-lead servers, network equipment, site construction, electrical interconnection, cooling systems and lease-related payments. Timing can shift when equipment deliveries, permitting, power availability or project commissioning move. The range also reflects uncertainty about how quickly Meta wants to add capacity as model training and inference demand develop.
Readers should keep three distinctions in mind:
- Guidance versus results: $115 billion–$135 billion is management’s 2026 expectation, not an audited outcome.
- AI versus total company needs: the stated purpose includes AI efforts and the core business.
- Spending versus usable capacity: cash paid for a server or facility can precede installation, testing and production use.
How should you compare Meta’s capex, cash flow and lease numbers?
These measures answer different questions and should not be added together as if they were interchangeable.

| Measure | Question it answers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | How much cash did the business generate from operations? | Shows internal funding capacity before investing and financing decisions; Meta reported $115.8 billion for 2025. |
| Property-and-equipment purchases | How much cash went into physical assets? | Meta reported $69.69 billion in 2025, mainly for servers, data centers and network infrastructure. |
| Total capital expenditures | How much investment did Meta classify as capex? | Meta reported $72.22 billion in 2025, including finance-lease principal payments. |
| Debt proceeds | How much external financing was raised? | Net proceeds of $29.91 billion came from notes issued in November 2025; this creates repayment and interest obligations. |
| Future lease obligations | What capacity payments are contractually committed but not yet commenced? | Approximately $103.77 billion as of December 31, 2025, mostly for data centers, colocations and network infrastructure. |
A company can report strong operating cash flow while increasing debt or leases, because each measure sits in a different section of the cash-flow and commitments picture. Looking at all of them together gives a better view of how much capacity is owned, how much is financed and how much is contractually reserved for later years.
What are the main financial risks of this model?
Utilization risk
AI hardware is expensive and can become economically outdated faster than conventional building infrastructure. If demand or model usage grows more slowly than expected, Meta may carry depreciation, power and lease costs before the capacity generates equivalent business value.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Technology and supply risk
Accelerator generations, memory systems and networking standards evolve quickly. Ordering too early can lock in equipment that is less efficient than a later design; ordering too late can leave capacity short when products or services need it.
Power and construction risk
Servers cannot operate without sufficient electrical delivery and cooling. Delays in interconnection, construction or commissioning can cause spending to rise before the related computing capacity is available.
Financing and contractual risk
Debt introduces interest and refinancing exposure. Long leases create fixed commitments that can outlast a particular hardware cycle, even though they can also help Meta secure scarce sites and power in advance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can the public filings tell you—and what can’t they?
The filings establish the scale and funding mix: operating cash, debt proceeds, property purchases, total capex and future lease commitments. They also identify the broad infrastructure categories receiving investment and distinguish historical results from forward guidance.
They do not establish a complete inventory of AI accelerators, a supplier-by-supplier spending table, the number of chips installed at each site or the share of capex devoted exclusively to AI. Treating an aggregate infrastructure figure as a chip count would overstate what the disclosures support.

How should you compare Meta with another AI infrastructure builder?
Use the same measurement basis for both companies. A useful comparison framework is:
| Comparison axis | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Funding source | Operating cash flow, debt, equity issuance or partner financing. |
| Ownership model | Owned facilities and equipment versus leases and colocations. |
| Capacity type | Training clusters, inference systems, networking, power and cooling. |
| Financial measure | Capex, operating expense, lease commitments and depreciation. |
| Disclosure quality | Aggregate infrastructure totals versus chip-model, quantity and supplier detail. |
Comparing one company’s capex with another’s lease commitments, for example, can make the first appear more capital-intensive simply because the accounting and ownership models differ. Aligning definitions before comparing totals is essential.
What should readers watch in future Meta reports?
- Whether actual 2026 capex lands inside, below or above the $115 billion–$135 billion guidance range.
- Changes in operating cash flow that affect how much spending can be funded internally.
- New debt issuance, maturities and interest costs that alter the financing burden.
- Lease commitments that reveal how much future data-center and colocation capacity is being reserved.
- Any improvement in disclosure about accelerator categories, deployment timing or infrastructure utilization.
Together, these indicators show whether Meta is funding expansion from a strengthening operating engine, leaning more heavily on external financing, or committing to capacity faster than it can put that capacity to work.

Is Meta’s 2026 AI infrastructure budget a guaranteed amount?
No. The approximately $115 billion–$135 billion figure is management guidance for 2026, so actual spending can change with equipment delivery, construction schedules, power availability and business demand. It also covers the core business as well as AI efforts.
Does Meta’s capex number equal its AI chip budget?
No. Capex includes servers, data centers, network infrastructure and principal payments on finance leases. The public filing does not isolate accelerator purchases or provide a complete model-by-model inventory.
Are Meta’s future lease obligations the same as debt?
They are contractual payment commitments for facilities and infrastructure that had not yet commenced as of December 31, 2025. Their accounting treatment differs by lease type, so the $103.77 billion figure should not be added directly to note proceeds as if both were identical forms of borrowing.
How can investors judge whether Meta’s infrastructure spending is paying off?
Track operating cash flow, service and advertising growth, utilization commentary, depreciation trends and changes in debt or lease commitments together. No single capex figure shows whether newly installed capacity is producing an adequate return.
