To start How Many Dudes?, treat each recruitment as a team-building decision rather than a hunt for one universally strongest character. Inspect the tooltip and Dudex entry, identify what your current squad lacks, then choose a Dude or Relic that gives the team a reliable function or interaction. Battles resolve automatically, so your decisions before and between fights—recruitment, Relics, stats, Trinkets, and resource use—determine whether the build survives. The game’s official description calls it a “roguelike dudebuilder” built around game-breaking synergies and simulated chaos. This guide explains how to read your options, count the roles and Dude Types in your roster, and learn from a first run without relying on a fixed tier list.

What is How Many Dudes?

How Many Dudes? is a roguelike autobattler in which you recruit Dudes, expand a roster, combine Dude Types, and watch the resulting team fight in simulated battles. The strategic work happens in the choices surrounding combat: which Dude joins, which Relic receives attention, how stats interact, and whether your lineup supplies the conditions needed for its abilities.

Butterscotch Shenanigans describes the game as “a roguelike dudebuilder that’s all about game-breaking synergies and simulated chaos.” The App Store listing uses the phrase “Funny Roguelike Autobattler.” Those descriptions point to the same practical lesson: you are not issuing an attack command every few seconds. You are constructing a system and reading the results.

How many Dudes and Dude Families are there?

The official game page lists 42 unique Dudes across six Dude Families. The families named there are:

“Finding and counting” should not be read as a literal puzzle that requires collecting all 42 characters in one attempt. For a new player, counting means noticing which Dude Types and battlefield functions are already represented, then seeing which useful interaction is missing. The roster figure describes the game’s available character pool; it does not establish that every Dude appears immediately, in every mode, or in a single run.

What should I do before choosing my first Dude?

Pause on every unfamiliar option and inspect it before recruiting. The interface and Dudex expose detailed terms, and those definitions are more reliable than guessing from an icon or a character’s appearance.

Read the tooltip and Dudex entry

Look for the Dude’s role, Ability wording, trigger condition, and any references to stats, teammates, Relics, or Trinkets. If a phrase is unfamiliar, open its glossary explanation in the Dudex rather than assuming it means ordinary-language behavior. A trigger such as being struck, reaching a threshold, or meeting a team condition can determine whether an apparently strong effect ever activates.

Describe the current squad in plain language

Before adding anyone, name what the team already does: for example, “we have damage but little protection,” or “we have a trigger that needs more frequent opportunities.” This quick description gives you a standard for judging the next choice. It also turns the roster into something you can count by function instead of simply counting portraits.

Check what the choice asks from the rest of the team

A Dude can be powerful only when the squad creates the right conditions. Ask whether your current members can help the new ability trigger, whether a Relic can reinforce it, and whether the choice competes with an existing plan. A flashy effect with no supporting pieces is often less useful than a modest effect that works every fight.

How do I build a coherent first-run team?

Build around a plan that covers the team’s immediate needs and gives later choices somewhere to fit. The game does not require a universal “best team”; its systems reward combinations of abilities, Relics, stats, teammates, and Trinkets that reinforce one another.

Start with role coverage

Use recruitment to cover functions rather than collecting characters you like in isolation. A practical first roster usually needs some way to deal damage, survive incoming pressure, and recover or receive support. Control, mobility, or a special trigger can become the defining plan, but a lineup that cannot stay alive long enough to use its damage will stall regardless of how impressive the damage description looks.

  • Damage: effects that remove opposing Dudes or accelerate that process.
  • Survival: durability, mitigation, protection, or positioning that keeps the team active.
  • Healing and support: recovery, buffs, or other effects that allow the core plan to continue.
  • Control or mobility: effects that change who can attack, who is exposed, or where a Dude is placed.
  • Enablers: effects that make another Dude’s trigger happen more often or at a better time.

These are planning categories, not official labels assigned to every Dude. Use the exact Ability text to decide which category a particular character fills.

Prefer a working interaction over a lonely highlight

Official examples show the design principle. Zombie Dudes can explode when struck, Ninja Dudes can throw Shurikens, and Cowboy Dudes can lasso other Dudes out of danger. The value of each example depends on the conditions around it: being struck, generating opportunities to throw, or having a teammate whose position can be changed.

When choosing between two options, ask, “What does this pick help my current team do?” Choose the one that strengthens an existing role or unlocks a clear interaction unless the alternative solves an urgent survival problem.

How should I compare two recruitment choices?

Use four checks whenever the game presents more than one plausible option: role coverage, trigger reliability, team compatibility, and scaling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Role coverage: Does the option add a missing function, or does it duplicate something the roster already does adequately?
  2. Trigger reliability: Can the Ability or Relic activate during ordinary fights, or does it depend on a rare situation?
  3. Team compatibility: Do your present teammates create the conditions this choice needs?
  4. Scaling: Will the effect continue helping as encounters become harder, or is it only an emergency patch for the next battle?

If one option is clearly more compatible but the squad is about to collapse, immediate survival can take priority. Conversely, a defensive pick that leaves the team unable to finish fights may only delay the same problem. The best answer is conditional on the roster in front of you.

What do Relics do, and how should I choose them?

A Relic is a build decision, not merely a detached power-up. Read what behavior it changes, identify the Dude or group that can exploit it, and check how dependable its trigger is before committing.

Match the Relic to a specific job

Give each Relic a sentence such as “this helps the front line survive,” “this makes the Ninja trigger happen more often,” or “this rewards the team for being struck.” If you cannot explain which current Dude benefits and when the effect should matter, the Relic may be waiting for a future build rather than helping this one.

Read the interaction chain

The developer’s guidance emphasizes examining how each Dude’s Ability and Relics interact with stats, teammates, and Trinkets. Follow that chain in order: what starts the event, which stat modifies it, what teammate or Trinket changes the result, and what happens afterward. A Relic can be excellent in a team built around its trigger and nearly irrelevant in a roster that never produces it.

Invest instead of abandoning a Dude early

The developer guide identifies a common beginner error: “The most common mistake new players make is to assume a Dude is weak, so they never choose any Relics for that Dude, and then that Dude falls behind his teammates and never gets a chance to shine.” Treat that as a practical warning about uneven investment. If you recruit a Dude, give the character a fair chance to reach its intended role before deciding that the concept fails.

The same guide summarizes the idea as: “Truthfully, the only weak Dude is a neglected Dude.” This is developer advice, not evidence that every Dude performs identically in every context. It means that judging a character without supplying its supporting Relics, stats, teammates, or Trinkets can produce a misleading conclusion.

Can I control the fights manually?

No manual attack-command system is established for the beginner loop described by the developer guide: battles resolve automatically. You influence the outcome through the roster, setup, resources, and between-battle decisions rather than directing individual strikes.

That changes how you diagnose a loss. Do not ask, “Which button should I have pressed?” Ask which condition failed: did the squad lack survivability, did a trigger never occur, did the economy prevent a needed choice, or did a Relic have no compatible partner? The automated battle is feedback about the construction decisions made before it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I use an automated battle to improve?

Watch for the first point at which the plan stops working, then change one meaningful variable on the next opportunity. A loss is useful when it identifies a cause instead of becoming a vague verdict that the Dudes are weak.

If the team dies before abilities matter

Count the survival tools in the roster and inspect whether they protect the Dudes that carry your damage or support plan. A team with several offensive effects but no way to remain active may need a defensive Dude, a protective Relic, or a different distribution of investment.

If the team survives but cannot finish fights

Look for duplicated defensive roles, low damage coverage, or triggers that rarely occur. A support effect is valuable only if it allows the rest of the roster to accomplish something. Consider whether a recruitment choice can add direct damage or enable an existing damage effect without removing the squad’s only reliable protection.

If a signature effect never activates

Re-read the exact trigger and list the events that would satisfy it. Then check whether your current teammates, stats, or Trinkets can create those events. If not, the choice may be premature for this run, even if it is strong in a different composition.

If one Dude falls behind

Review whether that Dude received any Relic support or whether the rest of the team accidentally serves a different plan. Uneven investment can make a potentially useful character appear weak. Either supply the missing support or deliberately move the roster toward the characters that are already receiving compatible bonuses.

What does “counting Dudes” mean during a run?

Use a simple roster count at each decision point. Count both the number of characters and the functions represented by those characters.

  • Count bodies: How many Dudes are currently recruited, and which spaces or team limits does the interface show?
  • Count families and Types: Which Dude Families or Dude Types are represented, and are you building toward an interaction that needs a particular combination?
  • Count roles: How many Dudes contribute damage, survival, healing or support, control, mobility, or enabling effects?
  • Count active triggers: Which Abilities and Relics have conditions your team can actually meet?
  • Count neglected pieces: Which recruited Dude has received no compatible Relic, stat attention, or teammate support?

This method prevents two common mistakes: adding a fourth version of a role the team already performs while ignoring a missing function, and chasing a family label without checking what the individual Ability does. The six-family roster is useful context, but the exact Ability and its interactions determine the decision in front of you.

What should my first run look like step by step?

You do not need to memorize all 42 Dudes before beginning. Follow this repeatable sequence and let each battle provide information for the next choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the available descriptions. Inspect tooltips and Dudex entries for every unfamiliar Dude, Ability, stat, Relic, and Trinket term.
  2. State the team’s current plan. Write or say what the roster is trying to do and which function is missing.
  3. Recruit for the gap or the interaction. Prefer a choice that fills the missing role or supplies a condition that an existing Dude can exploit.
  4. Assign Relics deliberately. Link each Relic to a named Dude or team behavior and verify that its trigger can occur.
  5. Check the supporting stats and Trinkets. Confirm that they reinforce the same Ability or role instead of splitting the roster across unrelated plans.
  6. Let the automated fight resolve. Observe whether the team fails through damage, survival, trigger timing, positioning, or resource limitations.
  7. Change one major assumption. On the next decision, address the clearest failure rather than replacing every Dude at once.
  8. Record the lesson. Note which trigger worked, which never appeared, and which Dude needs support before you judge its potential.

What are the most common first-run mistakes?

  • Picking by appearance alone: A character’s theme does not tell you whether its trigger fits the current roster. Read the Ability.
  • Chasing a single favorite: A favorite Dude still needs teammates and Relics that create the right conditions.
  • Ignoring role gaps: Several damage effects do not replace protection or recovery when the team cannot stay alive.
  • Choosing a Relic without a trigger: An effect that never activates contributes nothing to the present run.
  • Abandoning a Dude after one weak result: The developer specifically warns that neglect can make a Dude fall behind.
  • Assuming a failed run proves a tier list: The result may instead show an incompatible composition, missing support, or poor trigger coverage.
  • Trying to react during combat: Battles are automated, so spend attention on the decisions the game actually gives you.
  • Confusing the roster total with a collection requirement: The official figure of 42 unique Dudes does not say that one run must contain all 42.

Storefront details can differ by platform. Check the current listing for the edition you intend to use, and do not assume that price, feature availability, saved progress, or other platform behavior is identical across Steam, Google Play, and the App Store. The available information establishes the listed platforms, not a universal cross-platform policy.

How should I approach later runs?

Use later runs to test a hypothesis, not to repeat a memorized opening. For example, you might decide that a trigger-based team needs more reliable opportunities, or that a defensive core needs one clear damage finisher. Recruit and assign Relics in ways that test that idea, then watch whether the automated fights produce the expected behavior.

Keep the scope of each experiment small. Changing the entire roster, every Relic, and every stat focus at once makes the result difficult to interpret. A focused change tells you whether a particular teammate, trigger, or investment was the missing link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As you learn more terms through the Dudex, your “count” becomes more precise. You will not merely know that the roster has several Dudes; you will know how many can create a trigger, how many depend on a particular stat, and how many are receiving support. That is the mental model the title’s counting language is most useful for.

What is the practical takeaway for a new player?

Start with inspection, recruit for a coherent function, and read every Relic as part of a team interaction. Let automated combat show where the plan breaks, then correct the specific weakness instead of declaring a Dude bad after one result. The official roster contains 42 unique Dudes in six families, but success in a run comes from the relationships among the Dudes you actually recruited, not from collecting a number for its own sake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is How Many Dudes? free to play?

The available storefront information does not establish one price for every platform. The App Store listing presents it as a paid mobile game, while the official page separately lists Steam and Google Play; check the current listing for the platform and region you plan to use.

Are all 42 Dudes available at the start of the game?

The official roster description confirms 42 unique Dudes, but it does not specify starting unlocks or when each character appears. Treat the number as the size of the described roster, not as a promise that every Dude is offered in the opening choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does progress transfer between Steam, Google Play, and the App Store?

No cited information establishes cross-platform save transfer or account sharing. Verify the current store and in-game account documentation before assuming that a run or unlock made on one platform will appear on another.

Do I need to memorize every Dude Family before playing?

No. Begin by reading the individual Ability and trigger text, then use family names as context for patterns you notice. The six-family list helps you organize the roster, but it is not a substitute for checking how a specific Dude works with your current teammates.

What should I write down after a failed run?

Record the first failure point, the trigger that never activated, and the role the team lacked at that moment. This gives your next run a testable adjustment instead of turning the loss into a broad judgment about a character or family.
