M3E Canvas is a free, open-source browser editor for building Material 3 Expressive app screens and converting them into structured briefs for AI coding agents. You place real Material 3 components on phone or desktop frames, connect screens with taps or swipes, preview the flow, and copy a generated prompt for tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, or Cursor.

It runs as a static browser application: no account or project server is required, designs are autosaved locally, and optional AI assistance uses your own provider key from the browser. The result is not production code; it is a visual specification that gives an agent clearer layout, theme, navigation, and behavior instructions than a text-only request.

What is M3E Canvas, and why does it matter for AI-assisted development?

M3E Canvas is a visual specification tool built around Material 3 Expressive components. Instead of drawing an image that an agent must interpret, you assemble a screen from recognizable controls—such as a top app bar, navigation rail, card, text field, slider, or expressive progress indicator. The editor records those choices, their arrangement, theme settings, and interactions in a design document.

That distinction matters when “vibe coding” produces screens that look plausible but miss important behavior. A generated brief can tell an agent which screen opens after a tap, whether a swipe moves to another frame, what transition to use, and whether the target is Android or the web. The visual canvas therefore acts as a shared intermediate format between product intent and implementation.

The project describes itself as a free, open-source sketchpad for app screens made of real Material 3 Expressive parts. Its official documentation names Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and Cursor as examples of compatible coding tools. Compatibility means you can paste the exported brief into an agent; it does not mean the canvas executes or validates the resulting application.

How do you create a Material 3 Expressive prototype?

The basic workflow is sketch, connect, preview, and export. The editor is designed to keep common Material spacing and component relationships consistent while still allowing custom composition.

1. Choose a phone or desktop frame

Start with a screen frame that matches the experience you are describing. Phone and desktop canvases can scroll, which lets you model content longer than the visible viewport. The agent integration guide defines a phone frame as 412 × 892 and a desktop frame as 1280 × 800; those dimensions are part of the current beta document format rather than a universal requirement for every implementation.

2. Place components on the 4dp grid

Drag parts onto the frame. The editor aligns placements to a 4dp grid and provides magnetic connections between compatible neighboring elements. This helps bars, fields, cards, and navigation controls line up without manually calculating every coordinate.

Selections can be grouped and moved together. Layers let you control stacking and overlap, which is useful for a floating action button over content, a dialog above a scrim, or a bottom sheet covering the lower portion of a screen.

3. Configure each part

Component controls cover text, style, size, alignment, and tap behavior. You can represent both the visible label and the interaction that should occur when a user activates the element. The library includes the following categories:

4. Tune the theme

The theme panel lets you set a color palette or seed color, light or dark mode, contrast, corner shape, fonts, dynamic color, and motion style. Motion can use standard or expressive spring behavior. These settings are part of the specification an agent receives, so they are more useful than merely describing a color in prose.

A tidy function snaps bars and floating actions into common positions and arranges remaining content on 16dp margins. Use it after rough placement, then make deliberate adjustments where the design intentionally breaks the default rhythm.

How do you connect screens and preview interactions?

Assign tap or swipe actions to components and point each action to another screen or to a back operation. You can select slide, fade, expand, or no transition, then run a preview to test the flow before exporting it.

Model the important paths first

Begin with the path an agent must implement: for example, a list screen opening a detail screen, a form showing a confirmation snackbar, or a bottom navigation item switching between top-level destinations. Add secondary states only when they change layout or behavior. A static screen without an action does not tell an agent what should happen after the user interacts with it.

Use swipes where the gesture is meaningful

Swipes can link screens just like taps. They are appropriate for a carousel, a horizontally paged experience, or a gesture-driven transition. If the gesture is only decorative, leaving it out keeps the exported brief focused.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preview before exporting

Preview exposes broken links, missing back actions, and transitions that do not match the intended hierarchy. It also gives you a chance to check whether a scrollable frame contains the complete content and whether overlays such as dialogs and sheets sit above the correct layer.

How do you turn a canvas into a prompt for Claude Code, Codex, or another agent?

Export the whole design or a single screen as a concise brief, choose Android or web as the target, include behavior notes, edit the text if necessary, and paste it into your coding agent. The generated brief is a starting specification; review it for product rules that cannot be inferred from the visual layout.

  1. Open the export control. Select the entire flow when the agent needs navigation context, or select one screen when you are implementing a focused slice.
  2. Set the platform. Choose Android or web so the brief frames the implementation target correctly.
  3. Include behavior notes. Keep notes concrete: identify the destination for a tap, the expected back action, validation behavior, or the reason for a swipe.
  4. Edit the generated text. Resolve ambiguous labels, specify which data is placeholder content, and add constraints that are not visible in the canvas.
  5. Paste into the agent. Ask the agent to preserve the component hierarchy, theme choices, and navigation behavior while producing code for the selected platform.
  6. Iterate in the canvas. If the agent needs a different state, return to the design, adjust the relevant frame or action, and export an updated brief rather than relying on a long chain of conversational corrections.

Exporting one screen is useful for a small implementation task, while exporting the whole design gives an agent the relationships between screens. Neither export guarantees a pixel-perfect result: the receiving framework may have different typography metrics, platform conventions, or available Material components.

Can an AI agent generate an M3E Canvas design?

Yes. The official agent.md guide defines a beta contract in which a design is one JSON document. An agent can write that document and return it for you to open in M3E Canvas, refine visually, and convert into a coding prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the JSON document contains

The documented fields cover a title, brief, platform, palette, theme, frames, groups, navigation actions, and component kinds. Phone frames use 412 × 892 and desktop frames use 1280 × 800 in the guide. The format is explicitly beta: fields may be added while existing meanings are retained, so treat the current documentation as the source of truth when building an integration.

How share links are encoded

The guide says a share link is made by raw-deflate compressing the JSON and encoding the result with base64url in a #docz= hash. Keep the document under about 100 KB. Because the design travels in the URL hash, link length and browser handling become practical constraints for very large or media-heavy documents.

A reliable agent-assisted loop

  1. Describe the screen purpose, target platform, key states, and navigation in your request to the agent.
  2. Ask for a document that follows the current beta schema and stays below the approximate 100 KB guidance.
  3. Open the returned document in M3E Canvas and inspect spacing, hierarchy, and interactions rather than accepting the JSON blindly.
  4. Make visual corrections in the editor, then export the refined brief for implementation.

This loop separates generation from approval. The agent can accelerate the first draft, while the canvas gives you a human-readable way to catch a misplaced control or missing state.

Is M3E Canvas free, private, and usable without a backend?

The application is described as a static Next.js export that runs in the browser with no account or server required. Designs are autosaved locally, so the documented workflow does not provide hosted project storage or team synchronization.

Optional AI assistance follows a bring-your-own-provider-key model. The README says requests go directly from the browser to the provider. That is a client-side architecture, not a server-side proxy: review your provider’s key-handling guidance, avoid exposing keys in shared environments, and do not assume that a design is backed up remotely.

Local operation is an advantage when you want a lightweight sketchpad or need to keep drafts on your machine. It is less suitable when a team needs centralized version history, comments, permission controls, or guaranteed recovery after a browser profile is cleared. Export the JSON or prompt when you need an external backup.

What does M3E Canvas do better than a generic wireframing tool?

Its strongest differentiator is the combination of Material 3 Expressive fidelity and prompt export. A generic wireframe may communicate placement, but M3E Canvas can carry component kinds, theme decisions, motion preferences, and multi-screen actions into the brief.

Evaluation axis What M3E Canvas provides
Material 3 Expressive fidelity A parts library made of Material 3 Expressive controls, including expressive indicators and familiar navigation components
Visual-to-prompt export Whole-design or single-screen briefs with optional behavior notes and Android or web targeting
Interaction modeling Tap and swipe links, back actions, preview, and slide, fade, expand, or no transition
Theme control Palette or seed color, light/dark mode, contrast, corner shape, fonts, dynamic color, and standard or expressive spring motion
Storage model Browser execution and local autosave without an account or required server
Agent interoperability A beta JSON document and compressed #docz= share-link format

When evaluating another prototyping product, ask whether it offers the same combination rather than comparing only drawing features. In particular, check whether its export describes behavior, whether it targets your platform, and whether its storage and collaboration model match your privacy and team requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the practical limits and common mistakes?

  • Treating the canvas as finished UI code. The export is a specification. Agents still need implementation decisions for data, accessibility, error handling, responsive behavior, and platform APIs.
  • Leaving actions implicit. A button that looks clear to a person can be ambiguous to an agent. Assign its destination or state change and add a behavior note when the result is not obvious.
  • Overloading one document. The integration guide recommends keeping the JSON under about 100 KB. Split a very large concept into focused flows instead of forcing every state into one share link.
  • Ignoring the beta schema warning. An integration built against undocumented assumptions can break as fields evolve. Validate generated documents against the current guide and keep a fallback export.
  • Assuming cloud backup. Local autosave does not equal account-based history. Save important JSON documents or exported briefs outside the browser profile.
  • Skipping preview. Missing back actions, incorrect destinations, and unsuitable transitions are cheaper to fix before an agent generates code.

Who should use M3E Canvas?

It is a good fit for developers and product designers who already use Material 3 Expressive patterns and want a fast bridge into AI-assisted implementation. It is especially useful when a project needs several connected screens, because the exported brief can preserve navigation and transition intent instead of describing each screen in isolation.

It is a weaker fit for teams whose primary requirement is real-time cloud collaboration, formal design-token governance, exhaustive user-testing analytics, or a production-ready component implementation. The documented product is a browser sketchpad and specification bridge, not a replacement for an application framework, design-system repository, or usability-testing platform.

What should you check before sending an exported brief to an agent?

  1. Every primary action has a destination, state change, or explicit no-op.
  2. Back behavior is defined for overlays and secondary screens.
  3. Phone or desktop frame choice matches the target experience.
  4. Theme settings cover color, contrast, typography, shape, and motion intentionally.
  5. Scrollable content and overlays are arranged in the correct layer order.
  6. The brief names Android or web and includes non-visual behavior notes.
  7. The document remains within the approximate 100 KB beta-format guidance if you are using JSON or a share link.
  8. You have saved a copy outside the browser if the design is important.

What is the bottom line on M3E Canvas?

M3E Canvas is most valuable as a translation layer: it turns a Material 3 Expressive visual idea into a structured, editable brief that an AI coding agent can act on. Its free, local-first browser workflow lowers the cost of experimenting, while its screen links, transitions, theme controls, and beta JSON format provide more implementation context than a static screenshot. Use it for rapid specification and iteration, then rely on the coding agent and your normal engineering checks for the finished product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can M3E Canvas replace a production design system?

No. It specifies screens and interactions but does not provide a maintained code component library, accessibility audit, data model, or release pipeline. Treat the exported brief as an implementation input that your team still needs to verify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if an AI-generated JSON document does not open correctly?

Check that it follows the current beta field names, uses the documented frame dimensions, and stays near the recommended size limit. If the document is large, remove unnecessary states or divide the concept into smaller flows before trying again.

Is a screenshot enough for an AI coding agent?

A screenshot communicates appearance but usually omits destinations, gestures, transition intent, theme semantics, and component roles. A M3E Canvas export can carry those details in text and JSON, reducing the amount of behavior you must reconstruct manually.

Can I target both Android and the web from one prototype?

You can choose Android or web when exporting a brief, but the resulting code still needs platform-specific adaptation. Review navigation conventions, responsive layout, typography, and available APIs separately for each target.
