Broil bacon for about 2–3 minutes on the first side, then flip once it is lightly browned and broil the other side, watching closely. That timing is a starting point, not a universal rule: thickness, distance from the heat, broiler strength, and preferred crispness all affect how quickly bacon cooks.
When to flip broiled bacon
University of Minnesota Extension recommends placing separated slices on a broiler rack 3–4 inches from the heat and broiling until lightly browned, about 2 or 3 minutes. Turn the strips, broil the other side, and watch them closely. The first-side browning cue matters as much as the clock, since broilers and slices vary.
University of Minnesota Extension’s bacon instructions give this per-side starting method; they do not establish a guaranteed total cooking time.
Why the total time varies
Broiling instructions differ. A Whirlpool oven manual’s broiling chart lists bacon at four inches from the heat for 6–10 minutes. That is model-specific appliance guidance, not a universal per-side flip time. A separate recipe gives a different sequence—10 minutes, flip, then 2 more minutes—and notes that thicker slices may take longer.

Do not average those directions into an exact promise. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says cooking time depends on bacon type and thickness, heat, and desired crispness. Thin strips near a strong broiler may finish sooner; thick strips or less intense heat may take longer. Start checking early and use the browning and close-watching cues rather than relying on a fixed total.
How to broil bacon
- Arrange the slices: Separate them on a broiler rack, leaving space between strips. Position the rack 3–4 inches from the heat, following the University of Minnesota Extension method.
- Broil the first side: Begin checking at about 2 minutes. Flip when the surface is lightly browned; the cited instructions give 2–3 minutes as a starting interval.
- Turn and finish: Broil the other side and watch closely. Remove the bacon when it is cooked to your preference; the time will depend on the slices and broiler.
Food safety and handling
Cook raw bacon completely before taking it off the heat. FSIS advises against browning or partially cooking bacon, refrigerating it, and finishing the cooking later. Because bacon is thin, FSIS notes that checking its temperature with a food thermometer is difficult. Cured bacon can also remain pink because of curing agents, so color alone is not a universal safety test. The extension method’s practical cues are light browning and close observation; it does not provide a bacon-specific numeric internal-temperature target.
