For a useful estimate, divide the file size by the sustained upload speed available to the upload, then allow extra time for connection changes and YouTube processing. A prerecorded video intended to play 24/7 is uploaded as a normal video file; a continuous live feed sent by an encoder is a different workflow with different bandwidth requirements.
Estimate the transfer time from file size and upload speed
The transfer is mainly limited by the size of the video file and the upstream bandwidth the upload can actually sustain. Your internet plan’s advertised download speed is not the relevant figure; check upload speed on the network and device you will use.
Use this estimate
Approximate transfer time in seconds = file size in gigabytes × 8,000 ÷ sustained upload speed in megabits per second. This uses decimal gigabytes and megabits. It is a planning estimate, not a completion-time guarantee: overhead, fluctuating speed, and interruptions can make an upload take longer.
| Video file size | Sustained upload speed | Approximate transfer time |
|---|---|---|
| 10 GB | 20 Mbps | About 1 hour 7 minutes |
| 50 GB | 10 Mbps | About 11 hours 7 minutes |
For example, if your video is 10 GB and the upload sustains 20 Mbps, the calculation is 10 × 8,000 ÷ 20 = 4,000 seconds, or about 1 hour and 7 minutes. Use the speed sustained during a large upload if possible: a brief speed-test result may not reflect a long transfer.

Why the real time can differ
- Actual upstream capacity and stability: the upload may be slower than your plan’s headline speed or may fluctuate.
- Congestion: busy periods, traffic on your ISP, or other activity using your connection can reduce available bandwidth.
- File size and format: larger files take longer to transfer; format and encoding affect how large the file is.
- Quality and frame rate: higher-quality or higher-frame-rate videos often have larger files and can also take longer to process.
YouTube Help describes the overall upload range as “a few minutes to several hours” and notes that file size, internet connection, upload traffic, and video quality can affect the time. That broad range is not a prediction for an individual file. See YouTube’s guidance for videos stuck during upload.
Allow for YouTube processing after the upload
Transfer completion and processing completion are separate. YouTube initially makes a low-quality version available, then may continue processing higher resolutions. A video can therefore appear online before the quality you want viewers to watch is ready.

What YouTube’s processing example means
YouTube’s Help guidance says a 60-minute 4K/30 fps video can take up to four hours to process at high resolution; a 4K/60 fps video takes longer. This is a processing example, not an upload-time estimate or an average. YouTube does not publish a typical upload duration that can predict how long a particular file will take. See YouTube’s explanation of low video quality after upload.
If the stream depends on a particular playback quality, upload early and check that quality is available before relying on it. Do not assume a completed transfer means 4K or another higher resolution has finished processing.

Check the limits for a long prerecorded video
For a very long video intended to play continuously, confirm your account eligibility and file limits before starting. YouTube says verified accounts can upload videos longer than 15 minutes. Its stated maximum is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. These are upload eligibility limits, not estimates of how long uploading takes. Details are on YouTube’s page about uploading videos longer than 15 minutes.
Make the upload more reliable
- Check the file size. Use the file’s properties or your editing/export software, then estimate transfer time using the sustained upstream speed expected on the upload network.
- Measure the connection you will actually use. Check upload speed at the location and time you plan to transfer the file. If other devices or applications are uploading, pause them if practical.
- Use a wired connection if Wi-Fi is the weak link. Ethernet can reduce local wireless instability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your ISP. If the bottleneck is the ISP connection, a cable will not make the plan faster.
- Choose a less congested time if needed. If the upload is slow or unstable during a busy period, try again when fewer people are using the connection.
- Start early and verify processing. Check that the upload completes and that the required playback quality is available before the video needs to be live.
If an upload is interrupted
YouTube says an interrupted upload can be resumed from where it stopped for up to 24 hours. Return to the upload page and select the same file to continue. If the interruption is due to an unstable connection, improve the local connection where possible before resuming; restarting repeatedly without addressing the cause may waste time. See YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance.

A prerecorded 24/7 video is not the same as a live encoder feed
If you upload a finished file for a continuous playback setup, estimate the file transfer and processing times described above. If instead an encoder sends a continuous live feed to YouTube, the key question is whether your connection can sustain the live stream’s bitrate, not how long a file takes to upload.
For a live feed, match encoder settings to the connection
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and lists H.264 bitrate ranges of 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for live encoding, not promises about ordinary video upload speed. Choose settings that match the encoder, resolution, frame rate, codec, and stable available upstream bandwidth. YouTube transcodes live streams into outputs for viewers using different devices and network conditions. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, and run a test before relying on a live setup.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.

Do not try to solve a long prerecorded upload by applying a live bitrate recommendation: the workflows are different. Conversely, a fast file upload alone does not prove that an encoder can sustain a live feed without interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. The initial upload still depends on file size and your upload connection; moving playback to the cloud does not make that transfer faster.
