For the original Super NES version, plan on about 15 hours for the main story. A run that includes substantial extras or a 100% checklist is estimated at roughly 17 hours. Those are aggregated HowLongToBeat figures reproduced by Acclaimed Video Games, not a guaranteed timer: a first playthrough, deaths, exploration, route knowledge and guide use can all change the result.
After Ganon, the SNES game takes you to the Triforce and credits rather than a separate story campaign. You can continue using the save to collect missed Pieces of Heart, bottles, equipment, upgrades and dungeon treasure. The Game Boy Advance edition goes further: completing both A Link to the Past and Four Swords on the associated save opens the Palace of the Four Sword, which ends in four Dark Link battles.
At-a-glance answer
| Goal | Practical estimate or result | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Main story | Approximately 15 hours | Progressing through the required adventure and defeating Ganon. |
| Story plus extras | Approximately 17 hours | The main route plus optional exploration and collection work. |
| 100% estimate in the cited aggregate | Approximately 17 hours | The documented completion checklist, although a new player may need longer to learn the map and dungeon solutions. |
The estimates describe the original SNES game. They are useful for scheduling, but they should not be treated as a speedrun target or a promise that every player will finish within the same window.

What counts as “finishing” A Link to the Past?
Beating the story
For most players, finishing means reaching the end of the required route, defeating Ganon, taking the Triforce and watching the credits sequence. Once that sequence is complete, the narrative objective is over. The SNES release does not document a second story campaign that starts after the credits.

Finishing with extras
Some players use “beating” to mean leaving the file in a thoroughly completed state. That broader goal includes optional collectibles, equipment and upgrades that are not required to reach Ganon. It also means checking dungeon treasure rather than stopping as soon as the required item for the next area has been found.
Why two players can report different times
- Route knowledge: A returning player already knows the overworld connections, puzzle solutions and dungeon objectives.
- Deaths: Failed attempts add travel and recovery time, especially when a difficult room or boss is unfamiliar.
- Exploration: Searching every cave and screen naturally takes longer than following a direct route.
- Guide use: A written walkthrough can reduce time spent testing routes, while a blind run often includes deliberate discovery.
- Completion goal: A player stopping at the credits and one collecting every listed upgrade are measuring different activities.
What happens after Ganon on the SNES?
The ending is the endpoint of the story
After Ganon is defeated, the route leads to the Triforce and the credits. The available evidence describes this as the end of the SNES story, not the opening of a new post-ending chapter. There is therefore no separate SNES “epilogue campaign” to budget for.
The save remains useful for cleanup
Post-ending play is completion work. You can load the file and use it to pursue missed items, improve equipment and verify that dungeon treasure has been collected. This is valuable if you completed the story quickly and left optional objectives behind, but it is a checklist phase rather than additional narrative content.

The documented 100% checklist
The completion scope described by the Hyrule Atlas guide is broad enough that a player should decide in advance whether every category matters. It covers:

- All 24 Pieces of Heart.
- All four bottles.
- Optional tools and equipment.
- Weapon upgrades.
- Armor upgrades.
- Carrying-capacity upgrades.
- Remaining treasure checks in every dungeon.
These categories explain why a completionist file can take longer even when the story route itself is already finished. The checklist is about finding and verifying optional rewards, not unlocking another SNES storyline.
A practical SNES cleanup pass
- Load the completed file. Treat the save as a checklist workspace rather than restarting the adventure.
- Inventory the obvious categories. Check which bottles, Pieces of Heart, tools and upgrades are already present.
- Return to unfinished areas. Revisit locations where an item was inaccessible earlier because a tool, weapon or capacity upgrade was missing.
- Re-enter dungeons for treasure checks. A dungeon can be cleared for story progress without every chest being opened, so verify the remaining treasure separately.
- Stop when your definition of complete is met. The game does not require every optional item for the ending, so the final stopping point is your chosen checklist boundary.
What extra post-game content does the GBA edition add?
The unlock requirement
The Game Boy Advance release links its additional material to Four Swords. The Hyrule Atlas guide states that you must complete both A Link to the Past and Four Swords on the associated save, then pay the gatekeeper at the Pyramid’s eastern entrance.
That requirement is important because finishing the SNES-style adventure alone is not enough to access the GBA-only challenge. A player choosing the handheld edition should budget time for both linked components if the goal is to see all of its post-game content.
The Palace of the Four Sword
Once the requirement is met, the GBA version unlocks the Palace of the Four Sword. This is the substantial post-game addition identified for the handheld release. Its branches culminate in four Dark Link fights, giving the GBA file a combat-focused challenge beyond the SNES ending.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Hurricane Spin
The comparison in the Hyrule Atlas guide also lists Hurricane Spin as included on GBA and absent from SNES. It belongs to the set of edition-specific additions that a player can pursue when aiming for a complete GBA file.
What the GBA addition does not mean
The GBA material should not be described as a completely new sequel-sized campaign. The documented difference is a Four Swords-linked unlock path and its Palace challenge, alongside the Hurricane Spin. The core question is therefore edition-dependent: SNES cleanup ends with collection and upgrade work, while GBA adds a specific extra challenge after the linked games are completed.
SNES and GBA post-game differences
| Edition | After the ending | Extra completion targets |
|---|---|---|
| Super NES | Credits, followed by optional cleanup on the existing save. | 24 Pieces of Heart, four bottles, optional tools, weapon and armor upgrades, carrying-capacity upgrades and remaining dungeon treasure. |
| Game Boy Advance | Completing both linked games and paying the gatekeeper at the Pyramid’s eastern entrance unlocks additional content. | Palace of the Four Sword, its branches and four Dark Link fights, plus Hurricane Spin. |
The main story estimate concerns the original SNES adventure. The exact amount of additional time required for the GBA-linked path is not established by the cited figures, so it is better to describe the content than to attach an unsupported hour count to it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you are playing for the first time
Leave extra room beyond the aggregate estimate. Learning the world, recognizing dungeon logic and recovering from deaths are normal parts of a first run. Avoid judging your pace against a practiced route, because the cited figures combine many players and do not represent a guaranteed beginner schedule.
If you want a 100% SNES file
Make the checklist your project plan before starting. Mark the 24 Pieces of Heart, four bottles, optional equipment, weapon and armor upgrades, carrying-capacity upgrades and dungeon treasure as separate categories. That prevents a common mistake: assuming that defeating Ganon automatically confirms every collectible and chest.
If you want everything in the GBA release
Plan around the unlock condition rather than the SNES credits. Complete both A Link to the Past and Four Swords on the associated save, then use the gatekeeper at the Pyramid’s eastern entrance to access the Palace of the Four Sword. The extra objective is therefore a linked-edition checklist, not simply a return trip after the SNES ending.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Whether you use a guide is a pacing choice. It can reduce time spent searching, while playing without one preserves the discovery that makes optional exploration rewarding. Neither approach changes what the SNES ending represents or the GBA unlock requirements.
Common misconceptions about the post-game
“The credits mean the save is finished.”
Not necessarily. The story is finished, but the save can still support the optional collection and upgrade checklist. Completionists should distinguish narrative completion from item completion.
“SNES and GBA have the same post-game.”
They do not. The SNES comparison documents cleanup and collection goals, while the GBA comparison includes the Four Swords-linked Palace of the Four Sword and Hurricane Spin.
“A 100% file must take far longer than the story.”
The cited aggregate places the main story and 100% estimates relatively close together, at about 15 and 17 hours respectively. That does not guarantee a two-hour difference for an individual player: someone unfamiliar with the map may spend much longer searching, and someone using a precise checklist may move quickly.
“The GBA Palace unlocks automatically after Ganon.”
The documented path requires completing both linked games and paying the gatekeeper at the Pyramid’s eastern entrance. Defeating Ganon by itself does not describe the full unlock condition.
Bottom line for your playthrough
Choose your edition before setting a schedule. For SNES, budget the documented mid-teen-hour story run, then decide whether the 24-heart, four-bottle, equipment, upgrade and dungeon-treasure checklist is worth extending the file. For GBA, add the linked Four Swords requirement and the Palace of the Four Sword challenge to your plan. “Finished” can mean the credits, a cleaned-up SNES inventory or a fully completed GBA save; the right time estimate depends on which of those endpoints you mean.
