The UK National Cyber Security Centre says most Android devices receive updates for up to three years after first release, while many brands now offer up to seven years. The exact term depends on the model and may vary by region, so check the manufacturer’s policy for your phone’s guaranteed Android upgrades and security-update end date.
How many years of updates does an Android phone get?
There is no universal Android update guarantee. The NCSC’s 2025 guidance gives a broad range: most devices receive updates for up to three years after first release, while many brands offer up to seven. These are not guarantees for every model. The phone maker’s policy for the exact model and market is what matters.
For context, Android Open Source Project security best practices say devices should receive ongoing security support for at least two years from launch. That is guidance for device makers, not a retail warranty or a promise that every consumer phone receives two years of patches.
Two published examples show why it is useful to check both the model and the wording of its promise:

Google’s Pixel 8 announcement describes its commitment as “seven years of software support” and includes OS updates, security updates and Feature Drops. Samsung states its S24 policy using two separate measures: OS-upgrade generations and security-update years. Read each maker’s own terms rather than treating “years of updates” as a consistent industry-wide measure.
What is the difference between OS upgrades and security updates?
Android OS upgrades
An OS upgrade moves a phone to a newer major Android version, often alongside the manufacturer’s interface. A promise of a certain number of “generations” counts major upgrades in the manufacturer’s terms; it is not automatically interchangeable with a promise stated in years.

Security updates
Security updates patch known vulnerabilities. A phone can stop receiving major Android version upgrades while continuing to receive security fixes, depending on the maker’s policy. For security, the published end date for patches is therefore important even if the phone still appears to work normally.
Feature Drops and other feature updates
Some support promises also include feature delivery beyond major OS upgrades. Google’s Pixel 8 promise explicitly includes Feature Drops. Do not assume another maker includes the same type of feature update unless its policy says so.

When will your Android phone stop getting security updates?
Find the official support entry for your exact model and region, then use the manufacturer’s stated end date or support term. Support is commonly counted from initial release or first availability, not from the day you bought a phone second-hand or later in its sales life. A later purchase does not necessarily restart the support clock.
- Identify the exact phone variant and market. Model names can cover variants, and policies may differ by country or region. Use the model information in the phone’s settings or original paperwork.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support or security-update page. Look for the model’s guaranteed OS-upgrade information and security-update end date. Google directs Pixel owners to its end-of-support dates; for other devices, the NCSC advises contacting the manufacturer.
- Check how the term is counted. Note whether the clock starts at launch, first release or first availability, and whether the commitment is stated in years or OS-upgrade generations.
- Check your current patch level. On Android, open Settings and look for Security update or Android security update in the security or software-update area; wording and location vary by device. This indicates the installed patch level, not by itself the final date the phone is supported.
For its Android guide, updated 13 May 2025, the NCSC says schedules vary and advises checking Google’s end-of-support dates for Pixel phones or contacting other manufacturers. It recommends replacing a device at end of life to maintain security standards.

Does a support promise mean updates arrive on a fixed schedule?
No. A commitment describes the support window, not necessarily the day each patch reaches every phone. Google says Pixel updates are released after testing rather than on a fixed calendar day each month. OnePlus also cautions that delivery timing can vary by country, region or model. Carrier, market and variant may affect rollout, so do not infer that a phone has reached end of support just because another device received a patch first.
Managed Android devices have an additional distinction: an administrator may use system-update policies to postpone installation for up to 30 days. Android’s documentation warns that postponement can delay critical updates. This affects when an available update is installed on a managed device, not how long the manufacturer supports the phone.

How to compare update support before buying a phone
Compare the policy for each exact model, not just a brand-level headline. Check these points:
- Final guaranteed security-update date: this is the clearest way to judge how long the phone is promised vulnerability fixes.
- Major OS-upgrade commitment: record the number of upgrades or generations separately from security support.
- Support-clock start: determine whether the term begins at launch, first release or first availability.
- Region and variant: confirm that the policy applies to the version sold where you live.
- Delivery qualifications: note any published caveats about carrier, country, model or rollout cadence.
Android Enterprise Recommended requirements include publishing security-update end dates and guaranteed OS-upgrade information for relevant enrolled devices. Requirements vary by category and version, so enterprise qualification should not be read as a universal consumer support promise.
What to do when updates end
Once a manufacturer’s security-support period has ended, the phone no longer receives the promised security updates. The NCSC advises replacing end-of-life devices to maintain security standards. Confirm the end date with the manufacturer rather than assuming support continues because the phone can still install apps or operate normally.
