As of 4 October 2026, Liverpool’s latest cited availability update lists Joe Gomez as fit again but Giovanni Leoni as sidelined, with a planned return to team training during the September/October international break. That training plan does not establish match fitness. A recent lineup also shows how Liverpool selected in one match, but it is not a fixed depth chart.
What the latest availability update establishes
Liverpool’s 16 September 2026 availability page says Leoni had not played since September 2025 because of an ACL injury. The club planned for him to return to team training during the September/October international break; it did not say that he was match-ready after that planned return.
In its 14 September team-news report, Liverpool said Gomez was fit again following a pre-season muscle injury. The same report listed Conor Bradley, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike and Leoni as sidelined. These are dated status snapshots, not confirmation of availability for a later match.
How the options differ
| Option | What the cited evidence establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Joe Gomez | Fit again by Liverpool’s 14 September 2026 team-news report after a pre-season muscle injury. | That he would start a particular later match or occupy a fixed place in the centre-back order. |
| Giovanni Leoni | Listed as sidelined on 14 September; Liverpool’s 16 September availability page says he had not played since September 2025 after an ACL injury, with a team-training return planned for the September/October international break. | That the planned training return occurred, or that he was match-fit afterward. |
| Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe | Named by head coach Andoni Iraola as the available natural centre-backs during a specific July 2026 pre-season shortage. | That they form the current senior cover order or were available for a later fixture. |
| Luke Chambers | Iraola described him in July as a player who was not a centre-back but had played in the position. | That he is a natural centre-back or current first-choice cover. |
The distinction between natural centre-backs and emergency cover matters. In a 30 July press conference in Chicago, Iraola said: “You have seen these games, we are pretty thin in the centre-back position.” That was his description of the pre-season situation, when Virgil van Dijk was away and Gomez and Jacquet were absent; it should not be read as a verdict on Liverpool’s October squad. Liverpool’s account of his remarks is at Andoni Iraola offers update on Joe Gomez injury.

What the recent lineup tells us—and what it cannot
Liverpool’s report says its 12 September 2026 starting XI against Fulham was Alisson, Araujo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Tsimikas, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Munoz, Barcola and Isak. This is evidence of one selection in that match, not a complete centre-back depth chart or a guarantee about who would replace an unavailable defender in another game.
Selection evidence should therefore be read alongside availability and positional experience. A player appearing in one XI may have been chosen for that match’s circumstances; the report does not establish a permanent ranking among alternatives.

How to assess a replacement when team news changes
- Check the newest availability update. An injury list is a snapshot, and Liverpool’s cited updates date from 14–16 September 2026. Later team news may change who is available.
- Separate training status from match readiness. A planned or completed return to team training alone does not confirm match fitness; look for an explicit update on availability for selection.
- Identify whether the option is a natural centre-back or cover from another position. Iraola’s July comments made that distinction between Ndiaye and Ndukwe on one hand and Chambers on the other.
- Use recent lineups as evidence, not a depth chart. A starting XI records a selection for one match; it does not by itself predict the next replacement or starter.
Why the comparison has limits
The cited official reports provide injury status, a planned training return, coaching comments and a match lineup. They do not provide comparative performance figures or a definitive current ranking of Liverpool’s centre-back options. A likely starter for a future match cannot be established from these reports alone.
Liverpool’s earlier 3 September update said Gomez was expected to resume team training the following week and that Leoni’s group return was planned for the international break. The later 14 September report confirms Gomez was fit again while still listing Leoni as sidelined, illustrating why forecasts should be replaced with the newest confirmed status.
