Liquid cooling carries heat away from AI servers by capturing it near high-power components, moving it through a controlled liquid loop, transferring it across a heat exchanger, and rejecting or reusing it at the facility. In direct-to-chip systems, cold plates collect heat from processors; a cooling distribution unit (CDU) separates and connects the server-side and facility-side loops. Liquid cooling can reduce the burden on room air systems, but it does not necessarily cool every server component or eliminate chillers and water use.

How does liquid cooling work in data centers?

Nearly all electrical power consumed by computing equipment ultimately becomes heat. Liquid cooling captures some of that heat closer to where it is produced than a conventional room-level air system can, then transports it to equipment that can release it outdoors or make it available for reuse. The important idea is not simply that a server contains liquid: it is that heat moves through connected IT-side and facility-side systems.

  1. Capture heat. A cold plate, rack coil, or immersion fluid takes heat from the server or its exhaust air.
  2. Carry heat away. A circulating liquid moves that heat out of the server or rack.
  3. Transfer it across a boundary. A CDU or another heat exchanger passes heat from the technology cooling system to the facility cooling system.
  4. Reject or reuse heat. Facility equipment, such as a chiller, cooling tower, or dry cooler, releases heat to the environment. Where a suitable nearby heat sink exists, the facility may instead use some of the heat.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s data-center guide diagrams arrangements with condenser-water, facilities-water, and technology-cooling-system loops. Not every design uses the same number of loops or the same equipment; topology depends on the IT hardware, facility, and heat-rejection approach.

What is a CDU in liquid cooling?

A cooling distribution unit is the interface between facility cooling and the technology cooling system (TCS) that supplies IT equipment. It transfers heat between those systems and helps deliver liquid to the servers under conditions appropriate to the design; it is more than a pump.

The separation matters because server requirements and facility conditions are not identical. The CDU and associated controls help manage the exchange between loops, while the facility loop carries heat onward to the site’s heat-rejection equipment. The specific configuration determines such details as fluid, temperature, pressure, chemistry, and control strategy. These have to suit both the server specifications and the facility.

Designers also need operating procedures for fluid quality, leak detection, isolation, maintenance, and resilience. Those are part of the cooling system’s design and operation, not optional details to add after servers are installed.

Which liquid-cooling architectures are used for AI servers?

Direct-to-chip cold plates, rear-door heat exchangers, and immersion systems capture heat at different points. Each makes different demands on server hardware, rack design, fluid compatibility, and operations.

Architecture Where heat is captured How it is moved Practical distinction
Direct-to-chip cold plates At selected high-heat components, commonly processors Liquid passes through passages in plates attached to those components, then carries heat to a CDU or heat exchanger Can coexist with room air cooling for components not directly cooled by liquid
Rear-door heat exchanger In warm air leaving the rack Server fans, or additional fans in an active design, push exhaust through a liquid coil A hybrid approach that can add liquid heat removal while retaining air-cooled servers
Immersion At electronics placed in nonconductive dielectric fluid Fluid carries heat to a heat exchanger; in two-phase systems, vapor condenses and returns to liquid Requires fluid-compatible equipment and different handling and service procedures

How do direct-to-chip cold plates work?

A cold plate replaces or complements a conventional heatsink on a component that produces substantial heat. Liquid circulates through internal passages in the plate, absorbs heat from the component, and exits warmer. It then travels through the IT-side distribution path to the CDU or another heat exchanger, where heat passes to the facility system.

Cold plates can be used on processors and, where the design supports it, memory or other heat-producing components. They cool only the components to which they are connected. DOE describes cold plates as a direct-liquid-cooling technology; that classification does not mean every part of a server is liquid-cooled.

How do rear-door heat exchangers work?

A rear-door unit puts an air-to-liquid coil at the rack exhaust. Server fans move warm air through the coil, and the liquid removes heat before that exhaust disperses into the data hall. An active design may use additional fans to move air through the exchanger.

This approach cools the exhaust air rather than plumbing liquid directly to every targeted component. It can therefore serve as a hybrid between liquid heat removal and air-cooled server hardware. It does not change the need to design the liquid circuit, controls, and facility heat rejection for the rack load.

How does immersion cooling work?

In immersion systems, electronics sit in a nonconductive dielectric fluid. In a single-phase design, the fluid remains liquid as it absorbs heat and circulates to a heat exchanger. In a two-phase design, the fluid boils at a temperature selected for the system; vapor transfers heat to a condenser and returns to liquid.

Immersion is a different equipment and operations choice, not a drop-in substitute for adding cold plates to a conventional rack. The fluid, server materials, handling, and servicing procedures must be compatible with the particular immersion design.

Does liquid cooling remove all the heat from an AI rack?

No—not necessarily. Cold plates collect heat from components connected to them, but memory, power supplies, storage, network devices, and other parts may still warm the air. A data hall may therefore need air cooling alongside liquid cooling.

This is why “liquid-cooled” does not always mean “air-free.” The remaining air load depends on which components the system cools directly and how the server and rack are designed. ASHRAE’s AI data-center framework recommends separating high-density AI zones from lower-density areas and matching the cooling architecture to each zone’s workload density, rather than treating a whole building as one uniform load.

Is liquid cooling better than air cooling for AI servers?

There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on rack density, hardware, site conditions, retrofit scope, and operational requirements. Liquid or liquid-assisted cooling is especially relevant where high-density AI loads are difficult to manage with room air alone, but that does not make every liquid architecture right for every rack.

In its 2024 guide, DOE contrasts high-performance computing rack densities of 60 kW in 2013 with recently surpassed densities of 125+ kW per compute rack. That is contextual evidence of a density trend described in the guide—not a claim that every AI rack currently draws 125 kW or more, or that this is a fleet average. Greater concentration of heat makes it more important to assess where heat is captured and whether the cooling system can remove it at the rack and facility levels.

Decision factor What to check
Heat capture and density Which components are cooled directly, how much residual heat remains, and how rack density is expected to change
Existing equipment and retrofit Whether servers support cold plates, whether racks can accommodate a rear-door coil, or whether an immersion platform and tank operations are feasible
Facility conditions Local climate and water availability, power, available heat-rejection equipment, redundancy, and the temperatures permitted by IT equipment
Resource use How the complete cooling plant affects energy and water use; liquid cooling by itself does not establish either outcome
Operations and resilience Fluid quality, leak detection, isolation, maintenance access, controls, and failure response
Potential heat reuse Whether a nearby, usable heat sink exists and can accept heat at the system’s delivered temperature

DOE states that “The cold plate and immersion classes are considered direct-liquid-cooling technologies.” That is a useful classification of those two approaches, not a claim that their hardware, fluids, or servicing requirements are interchangeable.

Does liquid cooling use water?

It can, but “liquid cooling” does not identify one universal fluid or guarantee a water-free facility. ASHRAE identifies water with corrosion inhibitors and biocide, engineered fluids, oils, refrigerants, and dielectric fluids among liquids considered for datacom cooling. These are distinct choices, not fluids that can be substituted freely in any server or cooling loop.

There is also an important distinction between liquid circulating near IT equipment and the facility’s heat-rejection method. A system may use a technology-side liquid loop while relying on facility equipment with different fluid and water requirements. DOE discusses higher-temperature water classes and dry coolers as potential design pathways; ASHRAE also describes economizers and heat-reuse planning. Whether those options are viable depends on site conditions and the temperatures allowed by the equipment.

For the same reason, liquid cooling is not automatically chiller-free. Higher liquid temperatures can create opportunities for economization or dry heat rejection under suitable conditions, but the complete plant and the local climate determine the result. Specific energy use, water consumption, and allowable operating temperatures cannot be inferred without the installation’s equipment specifications, site, cooling topology, and operating data.

What should a facility evaluate before choosing a design?

Start with the IT load and the site, then compare architectures against the equipment that will actually be installed. A useful selection process makes compatibility and operating requirements explicit before procurement or retrofit decisions.

  1. Map the heat load. Identify rack densities, which components produce the concentrated heat, and what parts would remain dependent on air management.
  2. Check server compatibility. Confirm supported cooling interfaces, permitted fluid and temperature conditions, and whether cold plates or immersion are supported by the intended equipment.
  3. Assess the facility. Review available power, climate, water availability, existing cooling loops, heat-rejection options, redundancy, and space for distribution equipment.
  4. Compare retrofit scope. Cold plates require compatible servers, liquid distribution, and CDU integration; rear-door coils introduce liquid at rack exhaust; immersion requires a compatible equipment platform and tank operations.
  5. Set operating procedures. Define fluid-quality controls, leak detection, isolation, maintenance access, control response, and resilience planning for the chosen topology.
  6. Evaluate efficiency and reuse as site-specific outcomes. Determine whether warmer liquid can support economization or dry cooling and whether a nearby heat user can accept recovered heat. Do not assume either benefit without a facility-level assessment.

ASHRAE’s guidance emphasizes site-specific design and thermal envelopes, while DOE describes multiple water- and facility-loop arrangements. The engineering decision is therefore about the integrated system—not just the server-side cooling device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can liquid-cooled servers still have fans?

Yes. Liquid cooling can remove heat from selected components while fans continue to move air through the server and across parts that are not directly liquid-cooled. The exact fan arrangement depends on the server design.

Can I add cold plates to servers that are already installed?

That depends on whether those servers support the required cold plates and liquid connections. A retrofit also needs liquid distribution and integration with a CDU; a cold plate is not a universal add-on for arbitrary hardware.

Can a data center reuse heat from liquid cooling?

Potentially, if a nearby heat user can accept the heat at the temperature the facility can deliver. It is a site-integration opportunity, not an automatic result of installing a liquid loop.

Are the fluids used in cold plates and immersion systems interchangeable?

No general interchangeability is established. Fluid choice must match the equipment and system design; immersion specifically uses nonconductive dielectric fluid, while other cooling arrangements may use different liquids.
