Liquid cooling in an AI server rack moves heat directly from high-power processors into a circulating coolant, then transfers that heat to the facility’s water system. In the common direct-to-chip design, cold plates sit on CPUs or GPUs, a technology-cooling loop carries the warmed fluid to a coolant distribution unit (CDU), and a heat exchanger in the CDU passes the heat into a separate facility-water loop. The fluids remain isolated.
The rack may still use fans and room air for memory, storage, power electronics, and other parts outside the liquid path. Liquid cooling is therefore an engineered system of cold plates, tubing, manifolds, valves, sensors, controls, pumps, heat exchangers, and heat-rejection equipment—not a single pump added to an otherwise unchanged server.
What happens to heat inside a liquid-cooled AI rack?
Heat follows a short path from the processor to a cold plate, through coolant, and then out through a CDU. The basic direct-to-chip (D2C) sequence is:
- Generation: A CPU or GPU converts electrical power into heat.
- Conduction: A cold plate clamped to the component absorbs that heat through its contact surface.
- Transport: Coolant flows through channels inside the plate and leaves warmer than it entered.
- Collection: Server hoses feed the warmed coolant into rack or row return manifolds.
- Heat transfer: The return flow reaches a CDU, where a heat exchanger moves heat into facility water without mixing the two fluids.
- Recirculation: Pumps send the cooled technology-cooling-system (TCS) fluid back to the cold plates.
- Rejection: The facility-water system (FWS) carries the collected heat to the building’s heat-rejection equipment.
ASHRAE describes the equipment and facility sides as separate but connected systems in its data-center guidance (Chapter 20: Data Centers and Telecommunication Facilities). Keeping the loops separate lets the server-side fluid meet IT requirements while the facility side is managed for the building and heat-rejection plant.

How do the two cooling loops and the CDU work together?
The easiest mental model is two loops joined at one controlled boundary. The equipment loop serves the rack; the facility loop removes the heat from the CDU onward.
The technology-cooling loop
The TCS loop contains the fluid that travels through cold plates, server tubing, rack manifolds, and the CDU. Its pump establishes flow, while valves and sensors regulate temperature, pressure, and volume. Fluid chemistry and water quality must match the server and CDU specifications; the correct choice is not universal across deployments.
The facility-water loop
The FWS loop receives heat on the other side of the CDU heat exchanger and carries it toward chillers, dry coolers, cooling towers, or another approved heat-rejection arrangement. The facility loop can have different pressure, treatment, and operating conditions from the TCS loop because the heat exchanger is the separation point.

What the CDU actually does
A CDU is more than a pump. It commonly combines a heat exchanger, pumps, valves, temperature and pressure instrumentation, flow monitoring, controls, and sometimes filtration. Dell’s 2025 guidance notes that the CDU isolates the secondary fluid network from facility water and controls supply temperature, including keeping coolant above the surrounding air’s dew point to reduce condensation risk (Key Cooling Strategies for AI Deployments). A CDU can be mounted in the rack or outside it and can serve one rack or several, depending on the design.
Which components are installed around an AI rack?
A complete liquid path includes more than the visible cold plates. The following parts perform distinct jobs:
| Component | Role in the system |
|---|---|
| Cold plate | Conducts heat from a CPU or GPU into coolant flowing through internal channels. |
| Server tubing and hoses | Connects each cold plate to rack distribution while accommodating service access and equipment movement. |
| Supply and return manifolds | Collects flow from multiple servers and divides cooled fluid to each branch. |
| Quick disconnects | Allow a server or hose section to be isolated and removed when the installation is designed and serviced correctly. |
| Isolation valves | Shut off a branch or section so work can occur without draining an entire system. |
| CDU | Circulates TCS fluid, transfers heat to FWS water, and controls operating conditions. |
| Sensors and controls | Measure temperature, pressure, flow, and leaks, then trigger alarms or control responses. |
| Heat-rejection equipment | Disposes of heat delivered to the facility loop. |
ASHRAE’s 2019 white paper, Water-Cooled Servers: Common Designs, Components, and Processes, describes these distribution and service elements as parts of an integrated system. Connection size, pressure rating, materials, and fluid compatibility must be selected from the equipment and facility specifications rather than copied from a generic rack diagram.

Does liquid cooling replace air cooling in the data hall?
No. Direct-to-chip cooling removes heat from the components connected to cold plates, but it does not automatically cool every device in a server or every rack in the room.

What remains outside the liquid path?
Memory modules, storage devices, voltage-regulation components, network adapters, fans, and power-conversion hardware may still reject heat to air. Server fans move that residual heat through the chassis, while room air systems handle heat released into the space. ASHRAE’s AI data-center framework recommends matching the architecture to rack density and retaining air cooling where liquid cooling is unnecessary (Energy and Thermal Efficiency | AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework).
Why hybrid designs are common
A hybrid rack can use cold plates for the dominant processor load and air for lower-power or physically isolated parts. This avoids adding liquid hardware to components that do not justify it, but it requires enough airflow and room-level capacity for the remaining heat. A liquid-cooled rack therefore still needs fan, airflow, and environmental planning.
What are the main liquid-cooling architectures?
“Liquid cooling” describes several different arrangements. Identify the architecture before comparing hardware or operating requirements.
| Architecture | Where heat is captured | Typical implications |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-to-chip | Cold plates attached to selected CPUs, GPUs, or other high-power devices. | Short thermal path and high control at the chip; other components may remain air cooled. |
| Rear-door heat exchanger | Server exhaust air passes through a liquid-cooled door at the rack rear. | Removes heat after it leaves servers and can support mixed server types, while the servers themselves still use air movement. |
| Immersion | Equipment is surrounded by a dielectric liquid. | Uses a different tank, fluid, service, and equipment design from cold-plate systems. |
ASHRAE distinguishes these approaches in its data-center chapter (Chapter 20: Data Centers and Telecommunication Facilities, 2019 edition). A rack described as “liquid cooled” should state whether it means D2C, a rear-door exchanger, immersion, or a hybrid of them.
How are temperature, pressure, flow, and condensation controlled?
Controls protect both the electronics and the liquid infrastructure. The operating point must be chosen for the specific server, cooling class, fluid, facility, and climate; there is no single temperature or flow value that applies to every AI rack.

Temperature and dew-point margin
If a cold surface is below the surrounding air’s dew point, moisture can condense on it. The CDU therefore regulates supply temperature and the facility monitors room conditions so the TCS fluid remains above the required dew-point margin. Dell identifies this as a core CDU function in its 2025 deployment guidance.
Pressure and flow
Flow sensors and pressure sensors verify that each branch receives the required coolant. A blocked filter, closed valve, kinked hose, pump fault, or improperly balanced manifold can reduce flow even when the pump is running. Controls should alarm on abnormal differential pressure, flow loss, or temperature rise rather than relying on a single pump-status signal.
Leak detection
Leak-detection cables or point sensors can be placed near manifolds, quick disconnects, CDUs, and low points. ASHRAE includes leak detection among the instrumentation used in liquid-cooling systems. Detection should be tied to documented isolation and shutdown procedures; a sensor by itself does not contain a leak.
Fluid quality
Coolant quality affects corrosion, fouling, microbial growth, and component life. The fluid type, treatment, filtration, fill procedure, and sampling interval must follow the server and CDU manufacturer requirements. Mixing an approved fluid with an incompatible one can damage seals or reduce heat-transfer performance.
How is a liquid-cooled rack connected and serviced?
Installation and maintenance are planned around isolation points so one server can be serviced without taking unrelated equipment offline.
- Verify design documents: Confirm the rack’s supply and return arrangement, CDU capacity, pressure limits, fluid specification, and facility-water connections.
- Connect distribution: Attach supply and return manifolds, hoses, valves, and quick disconnects according to the documented flow direction and connection ratings.
- Flush and fill: Prepare the TCS loop with the specified fluid and cleanliness process before connecting production hardware.
- Test for leaks: Perform the required pressure, flow, and leak checks before energizing servers.
- Commission controls: Calibrate temperature, pressure, flow, and leak sensors; set alarm limits; and verify CDU pump and valve failover behavior.
- Service a branch: Isolate the affected server or manifold section, use the approved quick-disconnect procedure, cap or contain the connection, and restore the branch only after inspection and testing.
Quick disconnects make this workflow practical, but they do not make every disconnection safe by default. Residual pressure, hot fluid, contamination, and trapped liquid still require the facility’s maintenance procedure and protective equipment.

What should operators monitor during normal operation?
Monitoring should show whether heat is being removed, not merely whether a pump is powered. A useful operating dashboard includes:
Recommended Free Tools
- TCS supply and return temperatures, plus the temperature difference across the rack.
- CDU and branch flow rates, with alarms for low or unbalanced flow.
- Supply and return pressure, differential pressure across filters, and signs of restriction.
- FWS temperatures and flow needed to carry heat away from the CDU.
- Room temperature and dew point, with a configured margin below any cold surface temperature.
- Leak-sensor state and the location of any alarm.
- Pump, valve, heat-exchanger, and control-system status, including redundancy state.
ASHRAE’s AI cooling framework lists temperature, pressure, flow, and leak detection as key instrumentation. Trends are more useful than isolated readings: a slowly rising return temperature or falling branch flow can reveal degradation before a server reaches a protection limit.
What failures occur, and how are they isolated?
Most incidents are diagnosed by comparing temperature, pressure, and flow across the same path.
| Observed symptom | Likely area to inspect | First response |
|---|---|---|
| High processor temperature with low branch flow | Closed isolation valve, kinked hose, blocked filter, manifold restriction, or pump problem. | Check alarms and valve position, then isolate the branch according to procedure before opening any connection. |
| Normal TCS flow but rising rack return temperature | Insufficient FWS flow, fouled heat exchanger, or facility heat-rejection limitation. | Compare CDU inlet and outlet conditions with facility-loop readings. |
| Condensation warning | Supply temperature too low for current room dew point or a failed environmental sensor. | Raise coolant temperature or reduce room dew point as specified, and investigate sensor accuracy. |
| Leak alarm | Hose, quick disconnect, manifold, cold-plate connection, or CDU fitting. | Follow the emergency isolation plan, protect electrical equipment, and do not resume flow until the source and contamination risk are cleared. |
| One server affected while others are normal | Local cold plate, branch hose, connector, or server-side flow restriction. | Use branch isolation and service access rather than shutting down the entire rack immediately. |
These are diagnostic patterns, not substitutes for the equipment manufacturer’s limits or the site’s incident procedure. Designs with redundancy should document which pump, CDU, valve, or facility-water path can fail without interrupting the required IT load.

Why does liquid cooling matter for AI deployments?
AI accelerators concentrate substantial electrical power in a small area. Capturing heat at the processor reduces the distance heat must travel through air and allows the rack to use a dedicated liquid path for its highest-density sources. The benefit comes with added infrastructure: fluid management, CDUs, heat exchangers, monitoring, maintenance procedures, and a facility capable of rejecting the transferred heat.
The practical result is not “liquid instead of air,” but a coordinated thermal system. High-power chips can use D2C cold plates, uncooled components can continue using air, and the CDU can exchange heat with facility water while keeping the two fluids separate. Microsoft’s April 2025 overview illustrates this heat-exchanger role in modern liquid-cooling deployments (Liquid cooling heat exchanger units).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an existing air-cooled AI rack be converted to direct-to-chip cooling?
Usually not by adding hoses alone. The servers need compatible cold plates and manifolds, while the rack, CDU, facility water, power, controls, leak detection, and service procedures must all be assessed as one design. A retrofit is feasible only when the hardware and building systems support the required connections and operating limits.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11What liquid is used in an AI server cooling loop?
The exact fluid depends on the server and CDU specification and may include treated water or another approved coolant. The important requirements are compatibility, cleanliness, corrosion control, and documented fill and maintenance procedures; operators should never assume that two systems can share fluid.
Does a liquid-cooled rack still need server fans?
Often, yes. Fans may cool memory, storage, power-conversion parts, networking hardware, and other components not attached to cold plates. Their airflow and the room’s air system must be sized for that residual load.
What happens if the CDU loses power?
The response depends on the pump, control, and IT-power redundancy built into the design. A protected system may maintain flow with a standby path, while another design may use alarms and an orderly server shutdown. The site’s commissioning documents should state the exact sequence and allowable ride-through time.
Where should leak sensors be installed?
Place detection where a release could reach electrical equipment or floors, including around CDUs, manifolds, quick disconnects, hose runs, and low points. Sensor placement, alarm integration, and isolation actions should be tested during commissioning rather than added as an afterthought.
