Lemma is a browser-based LaTeX editor that gives an AI agent access to the same source, renderer, and document structure you are editing. When the agent writes invalid LaTeX, live KaTeX rendering returns a structured error with the affected block, message, location, context, and a suggested correction. The agent can then update only that block, watch the page render again, and leave a visible edit you can undo.
That closes the familiar loop of asking a model for an equation, pasting it into a hosted editor, copying a compiler error back into chat, and repeating. Lemma is not a full replacement for a production LaTeX distribution: it deliberately supports a documented subset, keeps unsupported constructs visible, and depends on a WebMCP-capable browser or its built-in Tool Inspector. But for interactive drafting, its shorter feedback loop is the important innovation.
What is Lemma?
Lemma is described by its creator, Umar Pathan, as “a local-first LaTeX pad for writing math with an agent.” The interface combines a CodeMirror source pane, a live KaTeX preview, split view, and an agent that can read and modify the current document through 16 WebMCP tools. The project is available as a live app at lemma-webmcp.netlify.app, with source code at github.com/umar0x/lemma.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDocuments are kept in IndexedDB in the browser tab. The author says the application has no backend, requires no account, and does not send typed content out of the browser. Those are architectural claims about this project, not a guarantee that every browser integration or future deployment will behave identically; inspect the version you use before putting confidential material into any web application.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The implementation uses a Next.js 16 static export, React 19, strict TypeScript, Tailwind 4, and Zustand. Pathan reports roughly one week of work and 57 commits. Those figures describe the build effort, not an independent assessment of reliability or code quality.
How does the self-correction loop work?
The key difference is that rendering feedback is inside the agent’s editing loop instead of being a separate human step. The sequence is deterministic enough to follow when you are debugging a document.
- The agent writes source. It inserts or edits LaTeX in the document rather than returning a code block for you to copy.
- The page renders immediately. Lemma parses the document and sends changed blocks to its KaTeX-based renderer.
- Errors become tool results. A failed block produces structured data rather than a screenshot or a vague “compile failed” message.
- The agent targets the faulty block. It uses the block identifier and character position to make a narrow update instead of replacing an entire document or searching for an imprecise string.
- The renderer runs again. A successful update removes the error; the changed block briefly glows so a person can see what happened.
The practical benefit is fewer context switches. You do not have to copy a compiler diagnostic into a chat window, explain which equation it belongs to, and paste the model’s proposed replacement back into the editor. The renderer is the source of truth the agent consults after every edit.
What does the deliberate typo demonstrate?
The demo document contains alpa, an intentional misspelling of the LaTeX command alpha. Calling get_render_errors returns a block ID, an error message, a suggestion, a character position, surrounding context, and a recommended fix. The agent can then call update_block to replace alpa with alpha. The page re-renders and highlights the corrected block.
This is a one-pass demonstration, not a claim that every mathematical error can be fixed automatically. A syntactically valid but mathematically wrong equation can render perfectly, so human review remains necessary.
Why are stable block IDs better than string replacement?
Lemma treats each equation, theorem, paragraph, table, and figure as a block with a stable identifier. That lets an agent address “the theorem after the definition” or “the block that reported this render error” without quoting a long fragment of source.
After a raw-source reparse, a reconciliation pass tries to preserve those identifiers. It uses exact matching first, then similarity scoring with a position penalty. According to the project description, this is intended to survive reordering, inserted and deleted blocks, and typo edits; the repository includes unit tests for those cases.

Why position matters during reconciliation
Similarity alone can map two nearly identical paragraphs to the wrong ID. The position penalty favors a nearby candidate when several blocks share similar text. That reduces accidental edits to the wrong theorem or equation after a user inserts material earlier in the document.
What block-aware editing changes for an agent
- More precise writes: an update can name one block instead of replacing a whole document.
- Smaller failure scope: a malformed edit is easier to inspect and undo.
- Better references: render diagnostics can point directly to the object that failed.
- Safer collaboration: human edits can be distinguished from agent edits when undo decisions are made.
Which WebMCP tools can the agent use?
The project exposes 16 tools divided into document reads, document writes, and view or export actions. The following list reflects the functions described by the author.
| Category | Tools | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Read | list_documents, get_document, get_document_outline, search_documents, get_render_errors |
Discover documents, inspect source and structure, search content, and retrieve renderer diagnostics. |
| Write | create_document, insert_blocks, update_block, delete_block, undo_last_change |
Create documents, add or change specific blocks, remove content, and reverse the latest eligible edit. |
| Comments | add_comment, reply_to_comment, resolve_comment |
Leave review notes, continue a discussion, and mark a comment resolved. |
| View and output | set_view, export_document |
Change the editor view and export the document, including a .tex representation. |
Tool calls return errors as values shaped like { error, hint } instead of throwing exceptions. The reason is operational: a rejected tool execution can be surfaced by a client as a generic UnknownError, while a structured result gives the agent a useful recovery hint.
Read operations carry a readOnlyHint. Content that contains user-written LaTeX or comments is marked with an untrustedContentHint, making it clear to an agent that text from the document is data to inspect, not an instruction to obey. Tool descriptions, parameters, outputs, insertion sizes, block sizes, and comment sizes are capped to reduce prompt and payload abuse.
How are human edits protected?
undo_last_change records who made each edit. The agent may undo its own most recent change, but the operation refuses to proceed if a newer human edit exists. Agent-authored comments carry a visible badge, and agent edits glow briefly. These cues do not replace review, but they make automated changes discoverable instead of silently blending them into the manuscript.
What LaTeX does Lemma render?
Lemma aims for a fast, honest subset rather than pretending to be a complete LaTeX distribution. KaTeX handles mathematical expressions, while Lemma adds document-level features that are often missing from a simple equation preview.
- Numbering and references: document-wide numbering, theorem counters across 17 environments, live
refandeqrefresolution. - Scientific notation:
mhchemsupport and preamble macros. - Tables: table parsing that includes
multicolumnand booktabs rules. - TikZ subset: basic lines, shapes, nodes, fills, dash patterns, and named colors compile to inline SVG.
Unsupported constructs are shown explicitly in the preview and preserved in .tex export. That behavior is important: the editor does not silently drop unfamiliar commands or claim that a visual approximation is equivalent to full LaTeX output.

What the subset means for real documents
A paper that relies on packages outside this scope may still be drafted in Lemma, but you should validate the exported source in a complete LaTeX toolchain before submission. A missing package, custom class, bibliography engine, or advanced TikZ library can be a release-blocking issue even when the surrounding equations render correctly in the browser.

Is Lemma local-first, and what stays in the browser?
According to the author’s description, Lemma stores documents in IndexedDB in the browser tab and has no application backend or account system. Typed content therefore remains browser-resident within the stated design. This is a different trust model from a hosted editor, where documents and collaboration services normally depend on a provider’s servers.
Local-first does not mean risk-free. Browser extensions, managed-device policies, backups, browser sync, and the AI client that connects to WebMCP can have their own data paths. Treat the privacy statement as a property of the Lemma application, then check the policies of the browser and agent you use.
How do you try the demo?
The shortest path is the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser, according to the project’s setup notes. A Chrome test path is also documented.
- Open the live application at https://lemma-webmcp.netlify.app.
- Load the demonstration document containing the deliberate
alpatypo. - In a WebMCP-capable browser or agent, ask it to inspect the document’s render errors and fix them.
- Watch for a structured diagnostic, a targeted block update, and the brief glow that identifies the changed block.
- Use the visible source and preview to confirm that the correction is what you intended.
On Chrome, the author says to enable chrome://flags/#enable-webmcp-testing before trying the browser integration. Flags are experimental and can move or disappear between Chrome versions, so do not enable them on a managed or production browser without understanding the policy implications.

For users without a WebMCP-capable browser, Lemma includes a Tool Inspector that exposes the same tools inside the application. That gives you a way to exercise calls manually, although it is a different experience from letting an external agent discover and invoke them.
Why might tool discovery differ by client?
The author reports that ChatGPT’s browser implementation discovers imperative tools but skips declarative form tools. Lemma therefore changed search_documents to an imperative tool. This is an environment-specific observation, not a WebMCP guarantee; client behavior can change as implementations mature.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The build notes also report that a sandboxed Codex CLI had no bridge to browser-tab tools while the ChatGPT desktop browser did. If an agent cannot see the document, first verify that the client actually exposes WebMCP to the active tab rather than assuming the editor is malfunctioning.
Can Lemma replace the copy-error-from-Overleaf workflow?
For short mathematical drafts and interactive debugging, it can remove the most tedious part of that workflow: manually ferrying diagnostics between the editor and the model. It cannot replace every reason people use a mature hosted LaTeX service or a local TeX installation.
| Workflow concern | Lemma’s approach | What remains a consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Where content lives | Browser-resident IndexedDB, with no backend or account described by the author. | Browser, extension, sync, and agent policies still matter for sensitive work. |
| Error feedback | Renderer errors are returned directly to the agent with location, context, and hints. | Semantic or mathematical mistakes can still render without an error. |
| Edit granularity | Stable block IDs support targeted insert, update, and delete operations. | Reconciliation is an implementation feature that should be tested on your document’s structure. |
| LaTeX breadth | KaTeX plus numbering, references, selected environments, tables, mhchem, macros, and a TikZ subset. |
Unsupported constructs are not compiled; validate exported source in a full toolchain. |
| Human review | Glowing edits, agent badges, and guarded undo expose and constrain automation. | You still need to inspect equations, references, and prose before publishing. |
| Client requirements | WebMCP-capable browser integration or the in-app Tool Inspector. | Discovery and browser support vary by client and can change. |
The right comparison is therefore not “AI versus no AI.” It is a shorter feedback path versus a copy-and-paste path, traded against the breadth, collaboration features, and deployment maturity of the toolchain you already use.
How does rendering performance work?
Lemma uses a render cache keyed by a numbering version and block hashes. The cache re-renders only changed blocks, including in a 60-block document, according to the author’s build report. That is an implementation claim rather than an independently measured benchmark, so treat it as an indication of the intended scaling strategy, not a guaranteed latency figure.
The cache also has a correctness constraint: changing numbering or references can make otherwise untouched blocks stale. Including the numbering version in the key lets the renderer invalidate those dependent results instead of displaying an old equation number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the main limitations?
- It is not full LaTeX. Package coverage and TikZ support are intentionally bounded. An unsupported command is surfaced, not magically compiled.
- WebMCP availability is uneven. A browser may expose imperative tools but not declarative ones, and a command-line sandbox may have no tab bridge.
- Rendering is not proofreading. A syntactically valid formula can encode the wrong theorem, units, sign, or citation.
- Local-first is a deployment description. It does not automatically audit browser extensions, sync services, or the agent’s own telemetry.
- Author-reported numbers are not benchmarks. The one-week build, 57 commits, 16 tools, 17 theorem environments, and 60-block cache example come from the project report.
The project also references a claim that frontier models score near 50% on LaTeX tasks in a TeXpert benchmark. The benchmark publisher, edition, and year are not identified, so the figure should be treated as an unattributed statement rather than a reproducible statistic.
What is a sensible workflow for serious writing?
- Start with a small section. Ask the agent to create one definition, theorem, or equation before handing it an entire manuscript.
- Inspect the outline. Use
get_document_outlineto verify that blocks are arranged as you expect before requesting broad edits. - Ask for targeted changes. Name the block or section and the intended mathematical outcome, not just “fix the document.”
- Check render errors after each batch. Have the agent call
get_render_errorsand resolve diagnostics before adding more content. - Review the source and preview together. Confirm that a visually acceptable result also has correct delimiters, labels, references, and notation.
- Export and compile elsewhere when required. Preserve the exported
.texsource and run the final document through the complete engine, class, and package set required by your publisher or course.
This procedure uses Lemma for what it does best—fast, block-aware iteration—while reserving final validation for the environment that will actually produce the submitted PDF.

What does Lemma show about agent-assisted editors?
The project’s central lesson is architectural rather than model-specific. As Pathan puts it: “The model did not get smarter. The feedback loop just got shorter. That is the whole trick.” Giving an agent a renderer, structured diagnostics, stable object IDs, and reversible writes can make an ordinary model more useful without claiming a new level of mathematical reasoning.
For users, that translates into a practical test: ask whether an editor can show the agent exactly what failed, where it failed, and what changed afterward. Lemma’s answer is a browser-resident document model with explicit tools and visible human controls. Its usefulness depends on whether your documents fit its supported subset and whether your browser exposes the required bridge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Lemma to produce a submission-ready PDF by itself?
Use Lemma for drafting and interactive repair, then compile the exported .tex with the exact class, packages, bibliography system, and engine required by your venue. The browser preview is not evidence that every dependency in a production document is available.
What should I do if the agent cannot see Lemma’s tools?
Check the active client first: WebMCP support is not uniform, and some environments expose imperative tools while skipping declarative ones. If the browser still cannot discover the tools, open Lemma’s Tool Inspector and invoke the documented operations inside the app.
Can an agent undo a change after I edit the same block?
The guarded undo records edit authorship and refuses an agent undo when a newer human edit exists. That prevents an automated rollback from silently erasing your intervening work.
Does the render cache make every large document fast?
No performance guarantee is established. The author reports cache behavior on a 60-block example; actual speed depends on document structure, browser hardware, and how often numbering or references invalidate cached blocks.
