Laser-based optical interconnects move AI data by converting an accelerator’s electrical SerDes stream into modulated light, carrying that light through fiber, and converting it back to electrical signals at the destination. A laser supplies the optical carrier, a modulator encodes symbols, and a photodetector plus receiver electronics recovers the data. Multiple wavelengths can share one fiber through wavelength-division multiplexing.
This matters because copper traces become harder to power, route and equalize as AI clusters push lane rates, port bandwidth and cable lengths higher. Silicon photonics integrates the optical functions with semiconductor electronics, while co-packaged optics (CPO) places the optical engine beside the switch or accelerator ASIC so the lossy high-speed electrical path is only millimeters long.
What is an optical interconnect in an AI data center?
An optical interconnect is the complete transmit-and-receive path that carries digital data as light between GPUs, CPUs, switches, storage systems or other accelerators. The endpoint still produces and consumes electrical bits; optics changes the medium used between those endpoints.

The transmit path
- SerDes output: An accelerator or switch ASIC serializes parallel data into one or more very high-speed electrical lanes.
- Laser carrier: A laser emits light at a controlled wavelength. In silicon-photonics designs, the laser may be integrated, coupled from another die, or supplied as part of a photonic engine.
- Modulation: A modulator changes the light’s intensity, phase or polarization according to the electrical symbols. Several independent wavelengths can be combined onto one fiber.
- Fiber transmission: The multiplexed optical signal travels through single-mode fiber. Fiber carries the signal with low loss over distances that are difficult for copper at the same data rate.
The receive path
- Wavelength separation: A demultiplexer separates wavelengths when multiple channels share the fiber.
- Photodetection: Photodiodes convert optical power into electrical current.
- Receiver electronics: Amplification, equalization, clock recovery and, where needed, digital signal processing (DSP) reconstruct the electrical SerDes lanes for the destination ASIC.
The link therefore has two boundaries: an electrical interface at each ASIC and an optical path between them. Optical bandwidth does not eliminate electrical design work; it moves the difficult long-distance portion into the photonic domain.

Why do AI clusters need lasers instead of relying only on copper?
Copper is efficient, inexpensive and easy to service over short distances. Its limitations become more severe when lane rates rise and a link must cross a board, a chassis or a row of racks. Loss, crosstalk, connector discontinuities and equalization power increase with frequency and distance.
Intel’s 2024 Optical Compute Interconnect (OCI) demonstration contrasts electrical I/O at roughly one meter or less with an optical connection reaching up to 100 meters of fiber. That distance is not a universal limit; it is the demonstrated configuration. It illustrates why optics can connect machines or racks without forcing the ASIC to drive a long, lossy electrical channel.
AI training also creates synchronized bursts between many GPUs. A fabric that cannot deliver bandwidth predictably can leave expensive accelerators waiting for gradients, parameters or collective-operation traffic. Optics offers a practical way to increase reach and aggregate bandwidth while keeping the electrical portion of each path short.

How does silicon photonics differ from a conventional optical module?
Silicon photonics uses semiconductor manufacturing to place waveguides, modulators, couplers and related optical structures on a silicon photonic integrated circuit. Electronic drivers, receivers and control circuitry are placed on the same package or on a companion CMOS die. The result is an optical engine rather than a discrete collection of separately wired components.
Intel describes its OCI as a photonics IC with on-chip dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), paired with a CMOS electrical IC. The current product description gives a first-generation support figure of 4 Tbps bidirectional; that is a vendor specification, not a guaranteed rate for every implementation.
Silicon photonics does not mean that every laser is fabricated in ordinary silicon. Laser materials and packaging can be separate from the silicon waveguide die, then coupled into the photonic circuit. “Silicon photonics” describes the integration platform and optical routing, not a claim that silicon alone generates all laser light.

What is co-packaged optics, and why put it next to the ASIC?
Co-packaged optics places optical engines on the same package or substrate as the switch or accelerator ASIC. The ASIC-to-optics electrical trace is then measured in millimeters rather than the longer path to a front-panel module. Shortening that path reduces insertion loss and the amount of equalization and DSP required.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchNVIDIA describes its CPO approach as integrating optical engines beside the switch ASIC and eliminating electrical SerDes loss on that segment. Its comparison reports 3.5 times lower power than traditional pluggable optics; this is a vendor comparison for the stated architectures and conditions, not an industry-wide constant.
CPO also changes maintenance. A failed optical engine may require servicing the package or board instead of pulling a replaceable front-panel module. Operators trade lower link power and potentially lower latency for more demanding assembly, thermal, fiber-attach and replacement procedures.
Which optical architecture should a data-center designer choose?
Pluggable optics, on-board optics and CPO occupy different points on the serviceability-versus-electrical-efficiency spectrum. Optical I/O chiplets extend the same idea to CPUs, GPUs, IPUs and system-on-chip packages.
| Architecture | Electrical reach inside the system | Optical reach | Power and DSP behavior | Serviceability | Packaging and thermal considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pluggable transceiver | Longest path: ASIC to board traces, connector and front-panel module | Determined by the selected module and fiber standard | May require retiming or DSP; electrical loss is highest of these options | Module is removable and replaceable in the field | Most modular; front-panel airflow and module heat must be managed |
| On-board optics | Shorter path because engines sit near the ASIC | Determined by the optical engine and attached fiber | Lower electrical loss than pluggables, with less DSP pressure | Board-level replacement is more involved than swapping a module | Requires precise board assembly and local thermal design |
| Co-packaged optics | Optical engine shares a package or substrate with the ASIC | External fiber still sets the system reach | Minimizes electrical SerDes loss; NVIDIA reports 3.5x lower power than its traditional-pluggable comparison | Package or board service may be required instead of a front-panel swap | Highest package, fiber-attach and thermal-management complexity |
| Optical I/O chiplet | Chiplet is co-packaged with a CPU, GPU, IPU or SoC | Depends on the chiplet’s external optical interface | Designed to move conversion close to the compute die | Depends on the host package and system design | Requires advanced multi-die packaging and optical coupling |
When pluggables remain the sensible choice
Use pluggables when field replacement, multi-vendor interoperability or incremental upgrades matters more than the last watt per bit. They are also easier to deploy in existing Ethernet or InfiniBand systems because the switch’s front-panel cages and module-management workflows are already established.

On-board optics shortens the electrical path without committing every optical function to the ASIC package. It can be attractive when a board designer needs better signal integrity but still wants an optical engine that is more separable than a full CPO assembly.

When CPO or chiplets are justified
CPO and optical I/O chiplets make the most sense for very high-radix switches and tightly integrated accelerator fabrics, where electrical loss, DSP power and front-panel density are limiting the design. They require a supply chain and service model capable of handling advanced packaging and nontrivial fiber attachment.
What bandwidth has been demonstrated or specified?
Published figures describe different products and demonstrations, so they should not be treated as one directly comparable benchmark.

| 4 Tbps bidirectional | Intel’s current OCI product description | First-generation OCI support figure; vendor specification accessed in 2026 |
| 64 channels × 32 Gbps in each direction, up to 100 m | Intel’s 2024 live OCI demonstration | Demonstration parameters; the arithmetic equals 2.048 Tbps per direction before accounting for protocol overhead |

| 115.2 Tbps full duplex over 144 ports | NVIDIA’s 2025 Quantum-X Photonics Q3450 configuration | Configuration described in NVIDIA’s technical blog, not a universal switch capacity |
| More than 5× lower power and up to 5× faster LLM training | IBM’s 2024 CPO prototype research claims | Projections for a research prototype, not results from a generally deployed product |
| Up to 80× chip-to-chip bandwidth potential | IBM’s 2024 estimate using optical structures and multiple wavelengths | Research estimate dependent on architecture and implementation |
Do optical interconnects reduce AI data-center power?
They can, but the saving depends on the complete link. A short electrical path lowers the equalization and DSP work needed to overcome loss. CPO removes much of the long ASIC-to-module SerDes path, and silicon photonics can combine many wavelengths without adding a separate electrical lane for every optical channel.
Power is not automatically lower in every deployment. Lasers, temperature control, driver circuits, receivers, DSPs, retimers and cooling all consume energy. A pluggable link with a short reach may be more efficient than an unnecessarily complex CPO design. Compare the measured watts per bit for the complete port, including conversion and cooling, rather than the laser alone.
IBM’s 2024 figures of more than 5× power reduction and up to 5× faster LLM training are projections associated with a CPO prototype. They indicate the potential of the approach, not a result that should be applied to all AI clusters.
How do optics affect latency, reach and protocol choice?
Fiber propagation is fast, and optical conversion can reduce the need for electrical retimers over a long path. However, a module’s DSP, forward-error correction, serialization and queueing still add latency. The lowest-latency design is not automatically the one with the shortest fiber; it is the one with the fewest required conversions and retiming stages for the target reach.

Optical hardware can carry Ethernet or InfiniBand when the transceiver, electrical interface, encoding, management and fiber specification match the fabric. Optics does not make Ethernet and InfiniBand interchangeable: the switch ASIC, firmware, module coding and link-training behavior still have to support the chosen protocol.

For a discrete physical product, single-mode fiber such as OS2 or SMF-28 is the cleanest fit for the long-reach optical links described here. Intel explicitly specifies SMF-28 for OCI. NVIDIA also lists optical cables among its AI-networking products. Select the cable only after the optical engine or transceiver requirements are known.
Fiber and connector checklist
- Fiber type: Confirm single-mode OS2 or SMF-28 rather than assuming a multimode cable is acceptable.
- Connector: Match the exact connector housing and latch style on both ends, including any breakout arrangement.
- Polarity: Verify transmit-to-receive polarity for the intended patching method; a physically compatible connector can still be pinned incorrectly.
- Fiber count: Check whether the link needs duplex fiber, parallel fibers or a wavelength-multiplexed pair.
- Reach: Choose a module rated for the actual distance, including patch panels and service loops. Do not infer a 100-meter rating from a different demonstration.
- Wavelength and standard: Ensure the transceiver’s wavelength plan and signaling standard are supported by both endpoints.
- Temperature and airflow: Check the module or engine’s operating range and the chassis airflow direction before installation.
A 400G or 800G optical transceiver can be a practical upgrade path, but compatibility must be verified against the switch, protocol, standard, wavelength, connector, fiber type and reach. A higher headline rate does not make an unsupported module interoperable.

Assuming a vendor figure is a universal benchmark
Bandwidth and power numbers are architecture-specific. Record whether a figure is a product specification, a live demonstration or a research projection, then compare like with like: same port rate, reach, protocol, FEC, DSP and cooling assumptions.
Ignoring service procedures
Pluggables can usually be replaced without changing the switch package. CPO and on-board designs may require board or package service, specialized fiber handling and tighter contamination control. Define spares, replacement time and fault-isolation procedures before standardizing on them.
Mixing incompatible optical assumptions
Connector fit alone does not guarantee link operation. Wavelength, lane mapping, polarity, reach class, module coding and host firmware all matter. Validate one complete link in the target switch and accelerator environment before ordering at cluster scale.

Underestimating thermal interactions
High-density optical engines place heat near the ASIC, where the thermal budget is already constrained. Model the combined ASIC, driver, laser, receiver and cooling load rather than treating optics as a heat-free replacement for copper.
What should a decision review include?
A useful review compares the complete system rather than choosing between “copper” and “fiber” in the abstract.
- Required bandwidth per port and aggregate fabric bandwidth.
- Electrical reach from each ASIC to its conversion point.
- Optical reach, fiber count and patching topology.
- Measured watts per bit, including DSP and cooling.
- Added latency from DSP, FEC, retimers and protocol conversion.
- Interoperability with the selected Ethernet or InfiniBand implementation.
- Field-replacement method, spare inventory and expected service time.
- Package, board, fiber-attach and contamination-control capabilities.
- Thermal headroom at the ASIC and front-panel locations.
The strategic direction is clear: as AI factories move toward 1.6 Tbps ports and beyond, optical conversion is moving closer to the compute and switching silicon. The right architecture depends on whether the limiting factor is electrical loss, serviceability, package complexity, power, or a combination of all four.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an existing copper AI fabric be upgraded to optics without replacing the switches?
Sometimes. If the switch has supported optical cages or a documented optical interface, you may replace cables and transceivers while retaining the switch. A board designed only for short electrical links generally needs a new line card, switch or accelerator platform; passive adapters cannot remove an ASIC’s electrical reach limit.
What happens when one wavelength in a multiplexed link fails?
The effect depends on the engine’s redundancy and monitoring. A failed laser or wavelength can remove one or more data lanes while other wavelengths remain active, or it can take down the whole logical link if lane grouping and FEC cannot tolerate the loss. Use module telemetry and endpoint error counters to distinguish a single-channel fault from a fiber or receiver failure.
How often should optical connectors be cleaned?
Clean and inspect connectors whenever they are installed, moved or suspected of causing errors, using equipment approved for the connector type. Dust on a single-mode end face can create enough insertion loss or reflection to fail a high-speed link, so visual inspection should precede repeated reseating.
Are optical links automatically safer for rack cabling than copper?
They avoid electrical ground loops and electromagnetic coupling, but they still need mechanical protection. Respect bend radius, secure the cable so connectors are not loaded, label both ends, and keep fiber routes separate from crush points and hot-air exhaust.
