To make messages, photos, and supported app data appear on two iPhones, sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices and enable the relevant iCloud feature on each one. Messages in iCloud and iCloud Photos are live synchronization services: changes made on one phone are reflected on the other. iCloud Backup is different. It periodically saves a restore snapshot, including data from apps that do not synchronize through iCloud, but it does not create a continuously mirrored second phone. Because each service is controlled independently, you can share photos without sharing messages, or enable only the apps whose data you want in the shared iCloud account.
What is the difference between iCloud sync and iCloud Backup?
Synchronization keeps a current cloud copy that participating devices can read and update. Backup saves a periodic snapshot for restoring a device later. Apple describes iCloud as working in these two ways: syncing and backing up.

This distinction explains why a second iPhone can show the same photo library but not the latest progress in a game. The photo library may be synchronized, while the game may store its progress only in an iCloud backup or in the game developer’s own account system.

Use the same Apple Account on both phones, then turn on the same features on both phones. A feature enabled on only one device will not provide an identical view on the other.

- Check the account. On each iPhone, open Settings and look at the account name at the top. Confirm that both phones show the same Apple Account. Apple states that signing in to the same account is what lets devices display the same iCloud information.
- Open iCloud settings. On each phone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Current iOS releases may use slightly different wording, but the iCloud page contains the controls described below.
- Enable Messages in iCloud. Select Messages in iCloud and turn on Use on this iPhone. Older iOS versions may show a simple Messages switch. Repeat this on the second iPhone.
- Enable iCloud Photos. Select Photos and turn on Sync this iPhone on both devices. This makes the Photos library an iCloud-managed library rather than a one-time backup item.
- Review app controls. In the Apps Using iCloud list, enable only the apps and iCloud services whose data should be available on both phones. An app appears in this list only if it has implemented the relevant iCloud capability.
- Keep iCloud Backup enabled. Return to the iCloud page, open iCloud Backup, and leave device backup on for restoration protection. Syncing Messages or Photos does not remove the need for a backup of other information.
Both phones should be connected to the internet while you complete initial synchronization. If the phones belong to different people, remember that using one Apple Account intentionally places every enabled iCloud category in the same account scope; choose the per-feature switches carefully.
How do Messages stay synchronized between two iPhones?
Messages in iCloud is the live-sync path for message history. With the same Apple Account and Use on this iPhone enabled on both devices, sent, received, and deleted messages update across the user’s Apple devices automatically.
What happens when Messages in iCloud is enabled?
The message history is stored in iCloud and kept current as conversations change. Sending a message on one iPhone makes it available on the other, and deleting a conversation or individual message is also reflected on devices where Messages in iCloud is active. This is synchronization, not a copy made only during a nightly backup.

What if one iPhone has Messages in iCloud turned off?
That phone does not stay current with the iCloud message history. Messages on the device may instead be covered by iCloud Backup, but the backup is a restore snapshot rather than an ongoing message feed. To bring the phone back into the shared history, enable Use on this iPhone while signed in to the same Apple Account.
Why can a message appear on one phone but not the other?
- The phones may be signed in to different Apple Accounts.
- Use on this iPhone may be enabled on only one device.
- The device may be viewing a local message history while Messages in iCloud is off.
- The iCloud account may not have enough available storage to accept new synchronized data.
Check the account identity and the Messages in iCloud switch on both phones before treating the discrepancy as data loss.

How does iCloud Photos synchronize photos and videos?
With iCloud Photos and Sync this iPhone enabled, the Photos library is uploaded to iCloud and exposed on every device using the same account with iCloud Photos enabled. Changes made on one device change the library on the other devices too.
What exactly is stored?
Apple’s description of iCloud Photos includes photos, videos, metadata, and edits. Photos and videos are stored in their original formats at full resolution in iCloud, subject to available iCloud capacity and the settings on each device. An edit made on one iPhone is therefore an edit to the shared library, not a separate edited copy that exists only on that phone.

Yes. The cloud library is shared, but each phone can keep a different local representation. In Photos settings, Optimize iPhone Storage can retain smaller device versions while full-resolution originals remain in iCloud; choosing Download and Keep Originals uses more local space. This setting affects local storage, not whether the library is shared.
What if iCloud Photos is off?
Photos and videos may be included in an iCloud Backup instead of being maintained as a live, shared library. Restoring that backup can bring the files back to a device, but it does not provide the same continuous cross-device behavior as iCloud Photos.
Will the same apps and app data appear on both iPhones?
No automatic rule makes every app’s data identical. Installing an app from the App Store and synchronizing the information inside that app are separate operations.

Apps that use iCloud
An app that stores documents or records in iCloud Drive, CloudKit, or another iCloud service can synchronize independently of device backup. Enable that app in the Apps Using iCloud list on both phones, and follow any account or in-app sign-in requirement the developer provides.
Apps that do not implement iCloud synchronization
iCloud Backup can include data for downloaded apps that do not sync through iCloud, including some social, game, and messaging apps. That data is useful when restoring the backed-up iPhone, but it does not mean a second iPhone will receive every new change immediately.
Why can an identical app installation show different information?
The app may have no iCloud synchronization support, its iCloud switch may be off, or the app may keep data in a separate account. In those cases, install the app on both phones, sign in to the app’s own account when required, and check its iCloud setting. Apple does not promise that every third-party app synchronizes its data.

What happens when I turn off a feature or delete something?
iCloud controls are per device. Turning a feature off on one iPhone removes that feature’s iCloud data from that phone’s view while leaving the data available on other devices where the feature remains enabled.
Deletion is different from turning a switch off. For synchronized Messages and Photos, a deletion is a change to the shared cloud data and is propagated to other enabled devices. Before deleting a large photo set or an important conversation, verify that you intend to remove it from every device using that synchronized library.

Turning off a feature also does not convert the other phone into a backup-only copy. The device with the feature disabled stops participating in live updates; iCloud Backup remains a separate setting.
How much iCloud storage do two iPhones share?
Apple provides 5 GB of free iCloud storage per Apple Account. Two iPhones signed in to that account draw from the same pool, as do synchronized photos, messages where applicable, backups, and other iCloud data. Full-resolution photo libraries and two device backups can consume that allowance quickly, but the amount varies with the users’ actual data.
To inspect usage, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud and review the storage breakdown. If the account needs more capacity, iCloud+ is Apple’s paid route for additional storage and features. Plan availability and pricing depend on region and can change, so check the current options shown for the account rather than relying on an old price.
Storage pressure can stop new synchronization or backups. If that happens, remove data you no longer need, reduce unnecessary device backups, or move to an iCloud+ tier before disabling the service that protects your current library.
How can I verify or troubleshoot two-iPhone synchronization?
Work through these checks in order; each one eliminates a different failure mode.

- Compare account names. Open Settings on both phones and confirm the same Apple Account is displayed at the top. A similar-looking email address is not enough if the accounts are actually different.
- Compare feature switches. In Settings > [your name] > iCloud, verify Messages in iCloud or Use on this iPhone, Photos or Sync this iPhone, and the relevant app switches on both devices.
- Check iCloud storage. Review the storage bar and category breakdown. A full account cannot accept additional synchronized content or a new backup.
- Check the app’s design. If one app is missing progress while Messages and Photos work, the app may not support iCloud synchronization. Look for the app’s own account and sync options instead of repeatedly reinstalling it.
- Confirm backup protection. Open iCloud Backup and check that it is enabled. A current backup is the recovery path for app data and other information that is not maintained by a live iCloud service.
- Recheck after changing a setting. Make the same change on both phones and inspect the relevant app again. Do not delete local data merely to force a refresh; a deletion in a synchronized service can affect the shared cloud library.
Should I use one Apple Account on two iPhones?
Using one account is appropriate when the phones should intentionally share the enabled iCloud categories, such as one person’s replacement phone and current phone. It is not a general-purpose way to merge two independent users’ private data. Because Messages, Photos, and selected app data can all belong to the same cloud account, decide which switches to enable before handing the second phone to another person.
The safest arrangement is selective: enable Messages in iCloud and iCloud Photos only when their histories should be common, enable individual apps only when their data should be shared, and keep iCloud Backup on for each device’s restoration needs.

The App Store download and the app’s stored data are separate. The app may require its own account, may not support iCloud synchronization, or may have data present only in a backup that has not been restored.

What should I check before erasing the older iPhone?

Does iCloud+ change the way Messages or Photos synchronize?
It provides additional storage and features; it does not change the basic requirement to use the same Apple Account and enable the service on each phone. The synchronization behavior still depends on the individual feature and the app’s implementation.
Can each iPhone keep different local photo storage while sharing one library?
Yes. Each phone can choose an iCloud Photos storage setting suited to its available space. Optimized local copies save room, while originals remain in iCloud for the shared library.
