In MLB’s 2026 postseason format, home-field rules depend on the round: the higher seed hosts the Wild Card Series, Division Series and League Championship Series; in the World Series, the pennant winner with the better regular-season record hosts. The All-Star Game no longer determines World Series home field.
Who hosts each MLB playoff series?
MLB’s published 2026 format includes 12 postseason teams—six in each league. The top two division winners in each league receive first-round byes; the No. 3 seed plays No. 6, and No. 4 plays No. 5 in the Wild Card Series. Home field through the League Championship Series follows seeding, while the World Series uses the pennant winners’ regular-season records.
| Round | Series format and venue pattern | Who has home field? | Games hosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Card Series | Best of three; all games at one ballpark | Higher seed | All games |
| Division Series | Best of five; 2-2-1 | Higher seed | Games 1 and 2, and Game 5 if needed |
| League Championship Series | Best of seven; 2-3-2 | Higher seed | Games 1 and 2, and Games 6 and 7 if needed |
| World Series | Best of seven; 2-3-2 | Pennant winner with the better regular-season record | Games 1 and 2, and Games 6 and 7 if needed |
These are venue schedules, not a promise that every numbered game will be played. A series ends when one club reaches the wins needed to advance or win the championship.
What do 2-2-1 and 2-3-2 mean?
Division Series: 2-2-1
The higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2. The other club hosts Games 3 and 4. If the series reaches a fifth game, it returns to the higher seed’s ballpark. MLB describes this pattern in its 2026 postseason format explainer and the Orioles’ postseason ticket information.

League Championship Series and World Series: 2-3-2
The club with home-field rights hosts Games 1 and 2. The opponent hosts Games 3, 4 and 5. If needed, Games 6 and 7 are played at the first club’s ballpark. The sequence is the same in both best-of-seven rounds, but the rule for deciding which club gets those home dates differs.
How is World Series home field decided?
The pennant winner with the better regular-season record hosts Games 1 and 2 and, if necessary, Games 6 and 7. Postseason seed does not decide this assignment: compare the two pennant winners’ regular-season records. If those records are tied, head-to-head record is the first tiebreaker under MLB’s published rule. MLB’s 2025 World Series home-field explanation describes the record criterion; its 2026 tiebreaker explainer says postseason qualification and seeding ties are resolved through regular-season criteria rather than a tiebreaker game.

Does the All-Star Game decide World Series home field?
No. MLB used the All-Star Game result to award World Series home field from 2003 through 2016. The regular-season-record rule took effect in 2017. Before the All-Star approach, assignment generally alternated between leagues. MLB outlines this change in its history of World Series home-field advantage.

It determines which club hosts the scheduled games at its ballpark. It does not guarantee a win. MLB reported in 2022 that home teams had won 54.7% of postseason games, but the cited explainer does not identify the seasons included in that aggregate, so it should be treated as a historical figure reported at the time—not a current probability or a result that applies to every round. The same explainer reported a 55.6% home-team win rate in the 2020 best-of-three Wild Card Series; that pandemic-era series was played without fans, so it is not a clean measure of a typical crowd effect. How to compare two clubs’ home-field rights
- Wild Card, Division Series or League Championship Series: check the bracket seed; the higher seed hosts.
- World Series: compare the pennant winners’ regular-season records, then use head-to-head record if those records are tied.
- Do not apply “better record” to every round: the World Series uses regular-season record, but earlier rounds use the higher seed under the published format. Division-winner and Wild Card categories determine seeding, so seed does not simply mean whichever club has the better raw record.
