Home Assistant can control heating through a compatible thermostat or HVAC device represented by a climate entity, or it can implement thermostat behavior in software with the Generic Thermostat integration. Generic Thermostat needs a temperature sensor entity and a switch entity that controls the heater. Automations can change a climate entity’s mode or target temperature, while its hvac_action attribute can tell you whether it is actively heating. The right approach depends on your equipment and the features its integration supports; these options are not interchangeable for every heating system.
What does Home Assistant control when you control the heating?
Home Assistant gives compatible thermostats and HVAC equipment a shared interface called a climate entity. A climate entity may expose an operating mode, such as Heat or Off, and a target temperature. Exactly which modes, states, and controls appear depends on the device and its Home Assistant integration, so two climate entities need not offer identical controls. Home Assistant’s Climate documentation describes this common representation.
A climate entity is not necessarily a physical thermostat. It can represent equipment that already has its own control logic, or it can be created by Home Assistant’s Generic Thermostat integration to control a switch using a separate temperature sensor. In the latter arrangement, Home Assistant provides the thermostat behavior in software.
It helps to keep three different roles straight:
- Temperature sensor: reports the measured temperature. It supplies a reading; by itself, that does not make it a thermostat or switch the heater.
- Thermostat or climate entity: compares conditions and settings, or provides a way to request a mode or target from supported equipment.
- Heater control: the underlying device or switch that actually controls the heating equipment.
Automations add scheduled or conditional actions to this arrangement. For example, an automation can change a climate entity’s mode or target temperature. The climate integration and device determine which operations are supported.

Should I use an existing thermostat or Generic Thermostat?
Use an existing compatible climate device when you want Home Assistant to interact with a thermostat or HVAC device that already provides its own controls. Use Generic Thermostat when your setup has a temperature sensor and a switch controlling the heater, and you want Home Assistant to implement thermostat behavior around them. Compatibility depends on the actual equipment and integration.
| Question | Existing climate device | Generic Thermostat |
|---|---|---|
| Where does thermostat behavior come from? | The compatible device and its Home Assistant integration. | Home Assistant, using a sensor reading and a switch. |
| What hardware does the approach require? | A supported thermostat or HVAC device; its exact requirements depend on the device and integration. | A temperature sensor entity and a heater switch entity. |
| Who determines available features? | The device and integration determine supported modes, states, and controls. | The integration provides its documented modes and configurable behavior. |
| What temperature-control tuning is documented? | Varies by device and integration. | Cold and hot tolerances, minimum and maximum cycle durations, cooldown, and keep-alive behavior. |
| How many heater switches does one thermostat entity control? | Depends on the device and integration. | One switch per Generic Thermostat entity. |
The comparison does not establish that either approach will work with every boiler, wiring arrangement, valve, or region. Check the support information for your particular equipment before choosing an approach. Generic Thermostat is a software integration, not a physical thermostat, and it does not make an electrically unsuitable switch safe for a heater.
Can I use a temperature sensor as a thermostat?
Not on its own. A sensor provides the measured temperature; Generic Thermostat uses that sensor reading together with a heater switch to create thermostat behavior in Home Assistant.

When the reading is sufficiently below the target, it turns the configured switch on; when the required temperature is reached, it turns the switch off. This makes sensor placement and the switch’s actual role important to the setup. The sensor must provide the temperature reading the thermostat should use, and the switch must be the control for the heater. Adding a sensor alone does not give Home Assistant a way to turn heating on or off.
What hardware category do I need for a switch-controlled heater?
You need a temperature sensor entity and a toggle switch entity that controls the heater. That switch might be provided by a compatible relay or another supported control device, but the documentation does not endorse a particular product or show that any generic smart plug or relay is suitable. Verify integration support, equipment compatibility, and appropriate electrical ratings before connecting or using a control device. This overview is not a wiring guide.
How do I make a Home Assistant heating automation?
A climate automation uses actions supported by the target climate entity. Home Assistant documents separate actions for setting a target temperature and setting an HVAC mode; the temperature action can optionally change the HVAC mode before applying the target. The exact options available depend on the device’s supported climate features.

- Identify the climate entity. Confirm which entity represents the thermostat or Generic Thermostat you intend to control.
- Decide what should change. Choose whether the automation should set a target temperature, select an HVAC mode, or do both.
- Use the matching climate action. Use Set thermostat target temperature for a target, or Set thermostat HVAC mode for a mode. The temperature action can optionally set the mode as part of that action.
- Check supported options. A requested mode or control may not be available for every climate entity. Use the options supported by your device and integration.
- Check the resulting state and activity. A requested Heat mode or target does not, by itself, establish that the heater has started. If the automation depends on heating activity, use the active-heating signal described below.
The action documentation is the appropriate reference for the available fields and options: climate.set_temperature and climate.set_hvac_mode. These actions apply to climate entities and their supported features; they should not be assumed to control an arbitrary sensor or switch directly.

How can I tell whether the thermostat is actually heating?
Distinguish the selected HVAC mode from the HVAC action. Heat indicates that the thermostat is set to heating mode; it does not prove that heating is active at that moment. The hvac_action attribute indicates what the thermostat is doing, and Home Assistant’s documented Thermostat started heating trigger watches that attribute to detect when active heating begins.
That distinction matters when an automation should respond to actual operation rather than a setting change. An automation triggered by selecting Heat may run even when the device is not currently heating. A trigger for started heating is intended for the transition into active heating. Whether a particular device exposes the needed activity information depends on its integration and supported features.
What do Generic Thermostat’s tolerances and cycle settings change?
These options tune how the software thermostat operates the switch; they are not additional sensors or separate heating zones. Generic Thermostat documents cold and hot tolerances, minimum and maximum cycle durations, cooldown, and keep-alive behavior. The documentation establishes that these settings are configurable, but this article does not prescribe values: suitable settings depend on the heater, sensor, and installation.

What should I check if the heater does not respond?
Work from the roles in the setup: determine whether Home Assistant has the right entity, whether the thermostat is requesting heat, and whether the device that controls the heater can act on that request.
- For a device-provided climate entity: check the device and integration’s supported modes and controls. A missing option may not be supported by that integration.
- For Generic Thermostat: confirm that the configured temperature sensor and heater switch entities exist and represent the intended devices. One Generic Thermostat entity controls one switch.
- Check mode versus activity: a climate entity set to Heat is not necessarily heating. Inspect
hvac_actionwhen you need to determine whether heating is active. - Check the automation action: make sure it targets a climate entity and uses an action supported by that entity. The set-temperature and set-mode actions do not guarantee every device accepts every option.
- Check the physical control separately: Home Assistant’s thermostat logic cannot establish that an incompatible or electrically unsuitable switch is safe or able to operate the heater. Verify the equipment and electrical requirements independently.
If you cannot establish that the switch, relay, or wiring arrangement is appropriate for the heater, stop before connecting or operating it and consult the equipment documentation or a qualified professional. Generic Thermostat describes software control, not electrical installation instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which approach fits a basic heating setup?
Choose based on what already exists and what you need Home Assistant to do. A compatible thermostat or HVAC integration is the natural starting point when the heating equipment already exposes a climate entity. A sensor-plus-switch arrangement is a possible fit when a suitable switch controls the heater and you want Home Assistant to provide thermostat behavior. In either case, integration support and equipment compatibility—not the name of an entity alone—determine what controls are available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Home Assistant climate entity always show the same controls?
No. The climate integration is a common interface, but the underlying device and integration determine which modes, states, and controls are exposed. Consult the device’s integration documentation if a control you expect is missing.
Can I create more than one Generic Thermostat for separate heaters?
Each Generic Thermostat entity controls one switch. The documentation does not establish that every multi-heater arrangement is suitable, so confirm the intended entity and equipment setup before configuring additional controls.
Will a thermostat-started-heating trigger work with every thermostat?
The trigger watches the climate entity’s hvac_action attribute. Whether that activity information is available depends on what the particular device and integration expose.
Does Generic Thermostat tell me how to wire a heater relay?
No. It documents thermostat behavior and configuration, not wiring instructions or universal relay suitability. Follow the heater and control-device requirements and seek qualified help where needed.
