Specialist GPU clouds focus on renting accelerator capacity, often with a simpler route to a GPU instance or a marketplace of available machines. AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud offer GPUs within broader platforms that also include identity, networking, storage, databases, monitoring, support, and enterprise procurement. Neither model is automatically cheaper or better: compare the same GPU, host resources, region, runtime, storage, data transfer, and billing term, then choose based on how much of the surrounding cloud platform your workload needs.

What is the difference between a specialist GPU cloud and a hyperscaler?

A specialist GPU cloud concentrates on access to accelerators; a hyperscaler integrates accelerators into a general-purpose cloud. That difference shapes setup, pricing, available capacity, and how much infrastructure you must manage yourself.

Specialist GPU clouds: a focused path to accelerators

Specialist providers commonly emphasize GPU rental, containers, notebooks, batch jobs, or marketplace capacity. Their appeal can be a more direct workflow or transparent hourly prices. Some also expose supply that is not presented like a conventional hyperscaler instance catalog. Availability, support, networking, and the terms for moving data can differ sharply between providers and even between machines on a marketplace.

A focused product can suit a team that already knows how to manage its operating system, software stack, and job scheduling. It may be less convenient if a project needs extensive managed services or must fit established enterprise controls. A lower advertised GPU rate is not proof of a lower bill for a completed workload.

AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud: GPUs within a larger platform

The major cloud platforms combine GPU instances with broader identity and access management, networking, storage, observability, policy controls, support, and other cloud services. That can simplify integration when an organization already uses the platform or has existing procurement and governance arrangements. The trade-off is that selecting a GPU instance can involve quotas, configuration choices, and host-resource and data-transfer charges beyond the accelerator itself.

Google Cloud’s catalog, for example, spans accelerator-optimized A and G series and includes configurations built around older T4, V100, and P4 options as well as A100, H100, H200, B200, GB200, and GB300 systems. Those names alone do not determine the bill: GPU count, machine configuration, region, and whether capacity is on demand, committed, or Spot all matter.

Which costs should I compare before choosing a GPU cloud?

Compare the cost of completing the same workload, not just the rate printed beside a GPU. A useful comparison holds the model, GPU memory, GPU count, CPU and RAM, region, runtime, storage, data egress, and billing term constant.

Build a like-for-like estimate

  1. Define the job. Record the required GPU model and memory, number of GPUs, host CPU and RAM, software requirements, and expected runtime. A single-GPU experiment and a multi-GPU training run are not interchangeable comparisons.
  2. Choose a region and capacity type. Compare the same region where possible, and identify whether the quote is for on-demand, committed, reserved, Spot, or marketplace supply. A different region or allocation type may change both price and availability.
  3. Include the machine around the GPU. Check whether the instance price includes the required host resources. If it does not, account for the CPU, RAM, and any other billable instance components.
  4. Add storage and data movement. Estimate the storage needed during the job and any data transferred into or out of the cloud. Confirm the provider’s egress terms rather than assuming that a low hourly GPU price covers data movement.
  5. Use the actual billing term. Compare the total for the time you expect to run, including any commitment required to receive a discounted rate. A long-term price is not the right comparison for a short experiment unless you are willing to accept that commitment.
  6. Check what happens when capacity is unavailable or interrupted. Confirm whether the desired configuration can be provisioned when needed, whether it can be reclaimed, and what support or recovery options apply.

This method also clarifies why a marketplace listing, a hyperscaler’s on-demand rate, and a committed-use price may not be comparable even when all mention the same GPU. They can differ in host configuration, region, billing obligation, availability, and included services. If the exact match cannot be established, treat the result as an estimate rather than a proven saving.

Published rates are examples, not a universal ranking

Google Cloud’s current pricing page lists an on-demand NVIDIA T4 at $0.35 per GPU-hour, $0.22 with a one-year commitment, and $0.16 with a three-year commitment. The commitment prices require accepting those billing terms; they should not be read as the rate for a flexible, short-lived job.

A 2025 DigitalOcean comparison lists these indicative hourly ranges across different GPU models and configurations:

Provider or listing Indicative hourly range in the 2025 comparison How to interpret it
DigitalOcean $1.49–$1.99 Range spans configurations; not a same-GPU quote.
Linode $0.52–$61.50 Wide range across models and configurations.
OVHcloud $0.88–$1.80 Indicative range, not a workload-matched comparison.
Vultr $0.118–$19.178 Range spans different GPU offerings.
Vast AI $0.043–$4.709 Marketplace pricing; the range does not establish equivalent machines or terms.
AWS Starting at $0.379 A starting figure, not a matched configuration quote.

These figures come from DigitalOcean’s 2025 comparison and cover different GPU models and configurations, so they do not establish which provider is cheapest for a particular job. They are useful as a prompt to request comparable configurations, not as a substitute for doing so.

Are Google Cloud Spot GPUs a good choice?

Spot GPUs can reduce compute cost for jobs that can tolerate interruptions, but they are a poor fit for work that must run uninterrupted unless the application has a recovery plan. Google Cloud describes Spot prices as offering 60–91% discounts for most machine types and GPUs; the discount and available capacity can change.

Google Cloud warns that “Spot VMs can be stopped or deleted by Google Cloud to reclaim capacity with a 30-second notice.” That interruption window matters more than the headline discount: a long job that loses uncheckpointed work may cost more in practice than a steadier allocation.

When Spot is a reasonable fit

  • Batch jobs that can restart or resume from saved state.
  • Training or processing pipelines that checkpoint often enough to limit lost work.
  • Experiments where the team accepts variable completion times and can retry failed work.

When to avoid relying on Spot alone

  • A deadline depends on continuous access to the GPU.
  • The workload cannot save progress or recover cleanly after a stop.
  • Restarting consumes substantial time or money that erases the expected discount.

Before choosing Spot, test the job’s recovery behavior and decide how often it must save progress. The discount is a pricing feature, not a promise that a particular machine will remain available for the duration of a run.

How does GPU availability differ by cloud and region?

GPU capacity is regional, and a provider’s broad footprint does not mean every GPU model is available in every region. Historical regional benchmarks can help frame the question, but they cannot tell you whether a specific instance is available to your account today.

CAST AI’s 2025 snapshot reported GPU instances in 85% of AWS regions, 76% of Azure regions, and 58% of Google Cloud regions. For the average share of regions offering any given chip type, it reported 31% for AWS, 33% for Azure, and 21% for Google Cloud. Its chip-specific figures were:

GPU type AWS regions Azure regions Google Cloud regions
A100 35% 53% 29%
H100 35% 47% 41%

Those percentages describe CAST AI’s 2025 benchmark snapshot, not live inventory, guaranteed capacity, or every configuration in each region. In that snapshot Azure led the compared regional share for A100, V100, and H100. For an actual deployment, check the needed model and region, then verify quotas and provisioning options with the provider; a benchmark cannot confirm what your account can launch.

When should I choose a specialist provider, a hyperscaler, or OCI?

Choose according to the job’s operating requirements as well as its GPU price. Specialist providers can be attractive for focused workloads, straightforward rental, or marketplace-priced capacity; hyperscalers can be a stronger fit when integration, governance, or an existing enterprise agreement is central.

Use a specialist GPU provider when

  • The workload is primarily GPU compute and does not require a deep set of managed cloud services.
  • You can operate the machine or container environment and validate support and networking for your needs.
  • A transparent hourly rate or marketplace option is useful, and you can check its configuration and availability before committing a job to it.

DigitalOcean’s 2025 comparison positions DigitalOcean GradientAI for digital-native enterprises and AI-native businesses, Linode for VPS-style users, OVHcloud for budget GPUs and basic machine learning, Vultr for globally distributed lighter GPU workloads, and Vast AI for researchers and tinkerers seeking marketplace pricing. Those are provider-positioning descriptions, not independent guarantees of fit. Validate the actual stock, support response, networking, and data-egress terms for your workload.

Use AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud when

  • The GPU job must operate inside an existing cloud environment and its identity, networking, storage, logging, or policy setup.
  • Your organization relies on the provider’s enterprise procurement, support, or capacity programs.
  • You are prepared to manage instance selection, quotas, and the full set of attached resource and data-transfer costs.

These platforms are not automatically the cheapest option, but the value of their surrounding services can matter more than a standalone GPU rate. Conversely, if a job needs little beyond accelerator time, paying for or managing a broader platform may not be necessary.

Where does Oracle Cloud Infrastructure fit?

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) offers NVIDIA and AMD GPU virtual machines as well as bare-metal instances. Its advertised families include Blackwell, H200, H100, L40S, A100, and A10. Oracle says its bare-metal instances with NVIDIA and AMD GPUs provide high performance “free of virtualization overhead”; that is Oracle’s product claim, not an independent performance comparison.

OCI’s economics material illustrates lower prices than AWS and Azure for an A10 VM configuration and an eight-A100 configuration, and says pricing is uniform across regions in those examples. These are vendor comparisons for illustrated configurations, not a general guarantee that OCI will cost less. Reproduce the workload, region, machine resources, storage, and data-transfer assumptions before treating a savings figure as applicable to your deployment.

What should I verify before committing a workload?

A short pilot can expose differences that a price page or capacity chart cannot. Use the same job and representative data, and record whether the machine is available, how long setup takes, whether the software stack works, and what the complete bill includes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exact configuration: Confirm GPU model and count, memory, CPU, RAM, and whether the listing describes a virtual machine, bare metal, or marketplace machine.
  • Capacity and limits: Check current regional availability and account quotas. A provider’s overall footprint or a historical region statistic is not a reservation for your workload.
  • Billing details: Confirm the unit billed, the minimum term if any, commitment conditions, and whether idle time or attached resources add charges.
  • Data path: Test transfer speed using representative data and confirm storage and egress charges. Keep the source and destination locations consistent with the estimate.
  • Operations: Check how you will provision, monitor, stop, and recover the machine, and whether the provider’s support arrangements meet the project’s needs.
  • Portability: Identify provider-specific APIs, images, orchestration, and storage dependencies before investing in automation that may be costly to move.

A workload that is easy to move between environments has more options when capacity or pricing changes. Standard images, containers, Kubernetes, or provider APIs can help, but portability is not automatic: networking, identity, storage, and operational tooling may still be coupled to a platform.

Is there one cheapest or best cloud GPU?

No single provider is the universal winner. The cheapest choice depends on the exact GPU and host configuration, the location and availability of capacity, runtime, data movement, and the billing term you can accept. The best operational fit depends on whether the job needs a focused rental path or the controls and services of a broader cloud platform.

For a short experiment, compare flexible, on-demand or marketplace options and include setup and transfer costs. For a recurring workload, compare the full cost of the required commitment against a flexible rate. For an interruption-tolerant batch job, consider Spot only after confirming the application can recover. For an enterprise deployment, weigh integrated governance, support, and existing agreements alongside compute cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move a GPU workload from a specialist cloud to AWS or Azure?

Often, but the effort depends on how much the workload relies on provider-specific storage, networking, identity, and provisioning tools. Before building automation around one platform, document those dependencies and test whether your container or machine image can run elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to own a GPU to train or run an AI model?

No. Renting cloud GPU capacity lets you use an accelerator for a job without buying and operating a physical GPU server. You still need to account for the machine configuration, storage, data transfer, and the time the instance remains billable.

Can I reserve an H100 in a particular region just because a provider lists it?

A catalog listing does not by itself guarantee that a configuration is available to your account or can be provisioned when needed. Confirm current inventory, quota, and reservation or capacity options directly with the provider before planning a deadline around it.

Does a bare-metal GPU always run faster than a virtual machine?

Not necessarily. Bare metal removes the virtualization layer for that instance, but end-to-end performance also depends on the GPU configuration, CPU, storage, networking, software, and workload. Treat provider performance claims as claims until you benchmark your own job.
