Google Play separates what a game costs to install from what you might pay inside it. The Play Store app marks games that offer in-app purchases with “Offers in-app purchases” beside the Price or Install button; on play.google.com, the notice appears below the app name. It signals that additional paid content or services are available—it is not a list of every offer or its price. Subscription terms and local prices require a closer look.
Where Google Play shows in-app purchases
Google documents the “Offers in-app purchases” notice in two places: beside the Price or Install button in the Play Store app, and below the app name on play.google.com. Google Play Help explains the label and in-app purchases.
An in-app purchase is a digital item, content, feature, or service bought from within an app or game. It could be a sword that improves a character, a key that unlocks a feature, or virtual currency. The label tells you that purchases are available; it does not disclose every item, price, or purchase condition.
What the upfront price does—and does not—tell you
A game may be free to download or have a price due before installation. Either way, its developer can separately offer paid items, feature unlocks, or subscriptions. A free install therefore does not mean that everything in the game is free, and a paid download does not establish that all later content is included. Before confirming an in-game purchase, check the offer and its price in the purchase flow. Google’s payments policy requires clear notice when a Play listing refers to app features that require an additional charge, and says the price in the app must match the price shown in the user-facing Google Play billing interface. The short listing label is not a complete price catalog. Google Play’s Payments policy sets out these requirements.
Why the price can differ by country
Google Play prices are market-specific. Developers can set prices universally or choose prices for individual countries. For automatically generated local prices, Google may convert a base price, account for tax in selected countries, and apply local pricing patterns and exchange rates; developers can also set local prices themselves. Where Google Play supports it, users see prices in local currency. Subscription availability in a country also depends on the developer’s availability settings. A price shown to someone in another country is not necessarily the amount you will pay. Check the listing in your own Google Play market, and review the current purchase offer before paying. A price or distribution change can take a few hours to appear on Google Play, according to Google’s price-setup guidance.
How to evaluate a game subscription
Subscriptions are recurring purchases, not just another kind of one-time game item. Before subscribing, look for the following details in the offer:

- Price and billing frequency: Identify the amount charged and whether billing is, for example, monthly or annual.
- Automatic renewal: Check whether the plan renews and when the next charge is due.
- Whether it is required: Determine whether the subscription is necessary to use the game or only unlocks optional benefits.
- What the plan provides: Review the benefits and any other material terms.
- Cancellation and access: Check how to cancel and how long benefits remain available afterward.
Google’s subscription policy requires developers to disclose the cost, billing frequency, automatic-renewal terms, whether a subscription is required to use the app, and other material details without making users take extra steps to find them. Subscription benefits must provide sustained or recurring value; a one-time lump sum of game currency or a single-use booster is not, by itself, an appropriate subscription benefit. Google Play’s Subscriptions policy sets out those standards.
For subscriptions bought through Google Play billing, Google’s general policy says cancellation does not refund the current billing period, but subscription content remains available until that period ends. Review the specific offer and account terms for the plan you are considering; the policy does not establish that every game uses the same subscription presentation. Google’s subscription policy covers this general cancellation treatment.

What the listing does not establish
Google documents the in-app-purchase notice, but the official guidance cited here does not establish one universal subscription badge, wording, or placement across all games, devices, and markets. Do not assume that the in-app-purchase label identifies a subscription specifically. Open the game’s offer details to determine whether a purchase is one-time or recurring and to review its terms.
