What Google Docs scripting lets you do
Apps Script is Google’s scripting platform for automating tasks across Google products. For Docs, Google documents two broad approaches: a script can create or modify a document when the script’s user has the required permissions, or it can be bound to a specific document for document-specific actions such as changing its interface and reacting to an open event. - Generate a document and insert formatted text or a table.
- Replace template placeholders with client or other data.
- Add a custom Docs menu, dialog, or sidebar with a bound script.
- Publish an Apps Script project as a Docs add-on.
Bound scripts and standalone scripts
A bound script is attached to a particular document. To create one from Docs, open the document and choose Extensions > Apps Script. The script can interact with that document’s interface and respond to its open event.
A standalone script is not attached to a particular document. Apps Script can still create or modify a document, provided the user running it has the necessary permissions. Google’s documentation establishes these capabilities, not a universal performance or suitability ranking; choose based on whether the automation needs document-specific interface features or should operate independently.

Replace placeholders in a Docs template
Placeholder replacement is useful when generating repeated documents from a template—for example, inserting a client name, address, or project details. The Apps Script guide demonstrates replacing text in a document and supports regular expressions for matching text patterns.
A typical workflow is to prepare a template with distinctive placeholder text, then have the script replace each placeholder with the corresponding value. The same general technique can support mail-merge-style document generation, though the data source and safeguards are up to the script’s design.

Add a custom menu, dialog, or sidebar
A bound script can extend the interface of the document it is attached to. A custom menu can give users a place to run document-specific actions; dialogs and sidebars can provide a more interactive interface. Google also documents publishing Apps Script projects as Docs add-ons, which makes an extension available beyond a single bound document.
Run code when a document opens
A bound script can define an onOpen trigger to run when the document opens. This simple trigger is appropriate for lightweight actions such as adding a custom menu.

There is an important restriction: a simple onOpen trigger cannot call Apps Script services that require authorization. If an action needs such a service, it cannot be performed directly by that simple trigger; the script must be designed around an authorized execution path instead.
Apps Script versus the Google Docs API
Apps Script and the Docs API are distinct ways to automate document work. Apps Script is suited to document-centric scripting and, when bound, interface extensions. The Docs API is a programmatic interface for workflows that create or update documents as part of broader applications and integrations.

When Google announced the Docs API on February 11, 2019, it described examples including automatic invoice creation, template-driven offer letters through Zapier, and importing scripts and screenplays from Docs into Final Draft. Google’s release notes record the gradual development of Docs scripting-related features: February 2014 entries include bookmarks, named ranges, cursor and selection APIs, and modal dialogs; a March 11, 2014 entry notes a developer preview for Docs and Sheets add-ons. The notes also include a Docs add-on menu method and the @OnlyCurrentDoc annotation. These dated entries provide historical context, but they do not establish which features appeared in the older announcement named in the headline.

The current Apps Script guide is the reliable reference for the capabilities described here. The exact older announcement page could not be confirmed, so its launch date and original feature list should not be inferred from later release notes.
