Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a DIY headphone, the head(amame) can sound surprisingly good—but there is no single sound or build outcome. In Headphonesty’s 2022 review, Trav Wilson said his assembled pair exceeded his expectations for the cost and could compete with pricier headphones. That is one listener’s experience, not a universal rating: the pads, drivers, printing and assembly all shape the result.
How good are the head(amame) headphones?
Wilson’s verdict on his own build was enthusiastic: “Whoa. These sound way better than they have any right to.” He also wrote that they “compete handily with far more expensive cans.” Those comments describe his listening experience with a particular configuration; they are not a controlled comparison or a standardized rating of every head(amame) build.
The practical answer is that the project has the potential to deliver an enjoyable, competitive-sounding headphone, but the result depends on component choices and build quality. Wilson found audible differences when he changed pads and drivers, so his preferred sound should not be treated as a guaranteed default.
What changes the sound?
Earpads
Wilson reported that swapping pads changed bass, midrange and treble. Of the pads he tried, inexpensive grey velour gave him the balance and energy he preferred. A different pad can shift the sound, so pad choice is part of tuning rather than a cosmetic afterthought.

Drivers
In Wilson’s comparisons, the 40 mm Peerless Tymphany drivers sounded brighter and more energetic than the 50 mm drivers. He noted a significant peak around 6 kHz in measurements made with his miniDSP EARS fixture. The 50 mm set sounded more balanced to him while retaining detail.
He also tried a 46 mm Symphones V8.1 driver, but preferred the Peerless drivers, saying the experimental option did not excel in this enclosure. Because driver changes required disassembly, these were not immediate A/B comparisons. The observations are useful configuration-specific impressions, not standardized lab results.

What driver options does the maker offer?
The maker currently presents three choices with different intended uses. These are the maker’s descriptions, not independent comparative findings for all three current options.
| Option | Driver | Maker’s positioning |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | 50 mm paper composite | Gaming and movies |
| Precision | 40 mm PEEK composite | Music listeners |
| Classic | 40 mm polyester/PET | Value option |
These current kit options should not be conflated with Wilson’s earlier build and driver experiments. His impressions do not establish how each current option compares with the others.

What does building one involve?
The head(amame) DIY headphones require a 3D printer: the project’s structural parts must be printed. The maker’s parts kit supplies selected hardware and soft parts rather than a finished headphone. The official head(amame) parts-kit page describes a kit with the latest files, two selected drivers with protective mounts and matched impedance, ear pads, a leather headband strap, mini-XLR pigtails, a cable and fasteners. Check the maker’s page for what is included in the current kit before ordering.
Wilson reviewed an earlier file version. He described the design as closed-back, discussed gyroid infill in the cups and the use of slicer support, and reported printing with 0.1 mm layers. Those details describe his build, not necessarily every current file or printer setup.

These figures are useful as a sense of scale, not guarantees. Your print time and total spend will depend on your printer, materials, component choices and sourcing. The 260 g figure also excludes two items that affect what you carry on your head.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the DIY project differ from head(amame) Pro?
Head(amame) Pro is a separate assembled, open-back model developed with Capra Audio; it is not the DIY headphone Wilson reviewed. The maker’s Pro page describes a weight below 280 g, repairable parts, a one-year warranty and a lifetime parts-availability guarantee. Its tuning section describes a slight bass and treble lift around reference mids and labels the measurements as not final. These are maker statements about Pro, not evidence about the sound or specifications of the DIY build.
