Game developers can earn money from upfront game sales, subscriptions, and purchases made inside a game. Free-to-play titles may also earn from advertising. The amount a studio ultimately receives depends on what it sells, where players buy it, distribution fees, and how the revenue is accounted for—there is no single formula that applies to every game.
How the main revenue models work
A game’s business model determines when players pay and what they receive. A studio may use one model or combine several, such as selling a game upfront and offering optional content later.
| Model | When the player pays | What is sold |
|---|---|---|
| Full-game sales | Usually once, before or at access | A digital download or physical copy of the game |
| Subscription | Recurring intervals | Access to an individual game or a broader game service |
| In-game purchases | At a player’s discretion during or after play | Downloadable content, virtual goods, or other additional content |
| Advertising | As players see or interact with ads | Advertising inventory within a game |
Upfront sales of a full game
Players may buy a full game as a digital download or a packaged physical product. For a company-specific illustration, Electronic Arts reported $1,343 million in digital full-game download revenue and $672 million in packaged-goods sales in fiscal 2024. Those are EA figures, not industry-wide totals. EA also estimated that 73% of its Xbox One/Series and PlayStation 4/5 units sold in fiscal 2024 were digital; that estimate applies only to those EA console units, not all games or platforms. Subscriptions to games and services
A subscription trades recurring payment for continued access. It may cover one game or a multi-game service; examples in Boston Consulting Group’s taxonomy include Xbox Game Pass and Apple Arcade. The model itself does not reveal how a particular developer is paid. Payment terms can differ by agreement, so it is not safe to assume every service pays per download, per hour played, or at a uniform guaranteed rate. BCG’s December 2024 report

In-game purchases and live services
In-game purchases let players pay for additional content after getting access to a game. These transactions can include downloadable content and virtual goods. A publisher may keep a game active and release new content over time, creating ongoing sales rather than relying only on the original purchase.
EA describes its live-services revenue as including extra content, subscriptions, and other revenue beyond full-game sales. It identifies extra content in its Ultimate Team modes and Apex Legends as material to its business, and says its free-to-play games are monetized through live services, particularly extra content. These disclosures illustrate one publisher’s approach; they do not predict what another studio will earn. EA’s fiscal 2024 Form 10-K

Advertising in free-to-play games
Some free-to-play games earn revenue by showing ads instead of charging players an upfront price. BCG’s 2024 market analysis estimates that advertising has a substantially larger share of revenue in mobile games than in its PC and console categories. That is a market-level estimate, not a forecast for an individual game’s ad income. BCG’s December 2024 report
Why a game’s platform matters
Revenue mix differs across mobile, PC, and console games. The costs and terms of distribution also depend on the storefront and billing arrangement. As a result, the same consumer price or monetization plan can produce different amounts for a developer depending on the platform and applicable terms.
How platform fees affect a developer’s share
A player’s payment is not automatically the developer’s take-home revenue. A storefront or billing service may charge a fee, and the applicable rate depends on the platform’s rules, market, program eligibility, transaction type, and sometimes other conditions.
Google Play’s published fee documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, distinguishes auto-renewing subscriptions from other transactions. In Australia, the EEA, Japan, the UK, and the US, the displayed fees depend in part on install cohort and regional rollout dates. In markets where updated fees had not yet rolled out globally, Google described a 15% fee on the first annual $1 million for enrolled developers, 30% above that tier, and 15% for automatically renewing subscriptions. These are conditional Google Play terms, not a universal rate for all stores, developers, or countries; check Google’s current rules for the relevant market and transaction. Google also says that 97% of developers distribute apps and use Google Play at no charge, and that 99% of developers subject to service fees are eligible for a fee of 15% or less through its programs. These are Google’s figures about its developer population and eligibility, not guarantees for a particular game studio. Google Play’s service-fee documentation

When comparing figures, first check what each one measures. Consumer spending is what players pay; net revenue reflects deductions such as distribution fees and other adjustments. Bookings are a separate accounting measure: EA defines bookings using product and service sales adjusted for changes in deferred revenue on online-enabled games. These figures are not interchangeable, and one company’s disclosures should not be read as a typical result for the market. EA’s fiscal 2024 Form 10-K

What this means for players and developers
For players, a low or zero upfront price does not necessarily mean a game has no business model; revenue may come from recurring access, optional content, or advertising. For developers, the right way to evaluate a model is to consider the platform, payment timing, what is being sold, distribution terms, and accounting basis together. A headline sale price or a market-wide estimate alone cannot show how much a particular studio earns.
