Fortnite no longer uses its old Battle Royale-inspired color tiers and quality tags as the official classification system for cosmetics. Series labels such as Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series remain. The Item Shop also no longer has one overall refresh timer: Epic says rotation time is shown in each player’s time zone and that planned removal dates are added to individual item descriptions. Check the specific item in the in-game shop for current availability and timing; neither a past listing nor an eligible Battle Pass item guarantees a return.
What “rarity” means in Fortnite now
In older Fortnite discussions, cosmetic “rarity” often meant the colored tiers and quality tags inspired by Battle Royale. Epic announced their retirement in its April 9, 2024 Shop and Locker changes. Those legacy colors should not be treated as the current official cosmetic quality classification.

Cosmetic series labels are different: Epic said labels such as Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series would remain to help players find cosmetics. Epic’s announcement described the distinction this way: “Different Series of cosmetics — such as the Icon Series or Gaming Legends Series — will still be there to help you find your favorite stuff!” Epic Games’ announcement presents series as an organizational label, not a replacement color tier.
How Item Shop rotations work
Epic removed the Shop’s overall refresh timer and said it would display rotation time in each player’s unique time zone. That means there is no single universal countdown readers should rely on when checking the shop. Epic also announced that planned dates for individual cosmetics to rotate out would appear on their item description pages, with those dates beginning to arrive in late May 2024.

The announcement does not establish that every item in every region currently displays a removal date. For an item you are considering, open its description in the in-game shop and use any date shown there; if none appears, do not assume a particular last day from an old rotation pattern. The official Fortnite Item Shop can show the current catalogue and V-Bucks prices, but listings change and Epic directs players to inspect items in-game.
How to check an item’s status
- Open the in-game Item Shop. Find the cosmetic you want and confirm that it is currently listed; a web-shop listing is only a time-sensitive snapshot.
- Open the item description. Look for a planned rotation-out date on that individual item’s page. Epic announced item-level dates, but universal coverage across items and regions is not established.
- Interpret the label separately from availability. A series label identifies a cosmetic grouping; it does not tell you whether the item is currently for sale or when it will return.
| What you see | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic listed in the live shop | The item is currently offered in that shop view; Epic’s web catalogue is time-sensitive. Epic Item Shop | A recurring schedule or guaranteed future appearance. |
| Planned removal date on an item description | The date displayed for that item is its planned rotation-out date, per Epic’s announced feature. Epic’s April 9, 2024 announcement | That all other items or regions display dates. |
| Icon Series or Gaming Legends Series label | The cosmetic belongs to a series used to help players find items. Epic’s April 9, 2024 announcement | A retired quality-color tier, current availability, or a return date. |
| Past Battle Pass cosmetic | Some future Battle Pass items may be eligible for later shop offers under Epic’s policy. Epic’s Battle Pass policy | A guaranteed return or a promise that a particular item will be sold again. |
Can Battle Pass cosmetics return to the shop?
Epic says items from future Battle Passes might be offered in the Fortnite Shop at least 18 months after the relevant pass expires. This is a possibility, not a return schedule or guarantee: Epic says selection depends on various factors and that it will identify items that will never be available outside the pass. The number of alternate styles included can also vary each time an eligible item comes to the shop. See Epic’s Battle Pass exclusivity changes for the policy.
