Can agentic AI give legal advice or decide what my family should do?

Remove or generalize identifying details
Before entering text, replace names with labels such as Parent A and Child 1. Generalize addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, school names, employer names, account numbers, case numbers and exact birth dates. Summarize medical information instead of uploading a record. Keep a private key that maps labels to real identities; do not put that key in the AI conversation.
Do not upload children’s identifiers, financial disclosure, medical records, passwords, immigration documents, unfiled evidence or material covered by a court order unless you have confirmed that the system is closed, access-controlled, encrypted as appropriate and governed by terms that meet your confidentiality obligations. A paid plan is not, by itself, proof of those protections.
Check the system’s controls
- Whether prompts and uploaded files are retained, for how long and in which country.
- Whether the provider uses data for model training or shares it with subcontractors.
- Whether your account supports deletion, export, role-based access and multifactor authentication.
- Whether an audit log records what the agent read, changed or sent.
- Whether a human can review or correct an answer and how complaints are handled.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office guidance on agentic AI emphasizes data minimisation, controlled permissions, transparency, contestability and meaningful human intervention for significant decisions. Those principles are practical tests for a family choosing a tool, not merely technical ideals.
