Yes—you can automate many appliances without opening or rewiring them. Put an ESP32 beside the appliance and have it reproduce the interface a person already uses: infrared (IR), a compatible sub-GHz radio-frequency (RF) remote, or a separate smart plug that switches the appliance’s mains power. ESPHome handles Wi-Fi, signal timing, and local automations; Home Assistant can schedule those actions and expose the ESP32 as a remote-control device.
The appliance remains physically unchanged. The important qualification is compatibility: IR requires a remote-controlled appliance and line of sight, RF requires the right frequency and modulation, and a plug only works when cutting and restoring power is an acceptable control method. Commands may not provide confirmation of the appliance’s actual mode, so reliable automations need deliberate timing, recovery testing, and a manual fallback.
What is the external ESP32 architecture?
The ESP32 acts as an external bridge rather than a modification inside the appliance. It receives a command over Wi-Fi, converts that command into an IR or RF transmission, and sends it toward the appliance just as the original remote would. For simple on/off control, a certified smart plug sits between the wall outlet and the appliance while the ESP32 or Home Assistant controls the plug.
ESPHome runs on the ESP32 and provides the device configuration, signal timing, Wi-Fi connection, and automations. Its remote_transmitter component can send common infrared and 433 MHz RF signals, while remote_receiver can listen for and decode signals from an existing remote. Home Assistant connects to ESPHome through its native API, allowing an automation to call a learned command while the ESP32 remains next to the appliance.

Because the bridge operates the same interface a person uses, there is no need to open the enclosure, identify internal control wires, or alter the appliance’s safety design.
How does IR control work without opening an appliance?
IR is usually the most reusable approach for consumer appliances that already have a handheld remote. You teach the ESP32 the original button signals, then replay those signals through an IR LED aimed at the appliance’s receiver.
1. Connect an IR receiver to the ESP32
Use an IR receiver module connected to a suitable ESP32 input and configure ESPHome’s remote_receiver component. Enable code dumping so the device reports the protocol it recognizes or the raw pulse timings when no named protocol is available. The exact pin and electrical wiring depend on the receiver module and ESP32 board; follow the module’s voltage requirements and the board’s pin documentation.

2. Capture every command you need
Point the original remote at the receiver and press each button you intend to automate. Record the decoded command or raw timing for power, mode, temperature, fan speed, input selection, and any other operation. Capture a button more than once so you can see whether the remote sends a consistent code or a changing frame.
Do not assume a button named “power” represents a known state. Many appliances use a toggle: one press turns the unit on and the next turns it off. A learned signal can reproduce the press, but it cannot by itself prove which state the appliance is in.

3. Add an IR transmitter
Connect an IR LED transmitter to an ESP32 output and configure ESPHome’s remote_transmitter component. Use the learned protocol or raw timing captured in the previous step. The transmitter must be aimed toward the appliance’s IR receiver; an enclosure or opaque obstruction can prevent a command from arriving even when the ESP32 is nearby.
4. Place and test the bridge
Home Assistant’s infrared guidance requires the adapter to be within line of sight of the infrared-controlled device. Place the LED where the appliance’s receiver can “see” it, then test each command at the intended distance and angle. A command that works on a workbench can fail after the ESP32 is moved behind a cabinet door or pointed away from the appliance.
5. Expose the commands to automation
After the transmitter is working, use the ESPHome native API connection in Home Assistant to call the learned command from a script, scene, schedule, or other automation. Add an explicit delay between related commands when the appliance needs time to process them—for example, send power, wait, then send a mode or temperature command. Keep a visible manual control available so you can recover if a command is missed.
What equipment and configuration does an IR build need?
A basic IR bridge consists of an ESP32 board, an IR receiver module for learning, an IR LED transmitter, suitable resistors or a driver circuit specified by the transmitter design, a stable low-voltage power source, and Wi-Fi coverage. The receiver and transmitter are separate jobs: the receiver captures the original remote’s signal, while the LED sends the replayed signal.
ESPHome’s setup sequence is intentionally simple: connect the receiver, create a remote_receiver instance, dump the codes, then configure a transmitter to replay them. Dedicated timing hardware on some ESP32 variants can improve the consistency of remote-signal generation, but exact performance depends on the board, wiring, LED drive circuit, distance, and appliance receiver.

Keep the ESP32 and its wiring on the low-voltage side. Do not connect GPIO pins directly to mains wiring or open the appliance to reach internal circuits. If the appliance’s original remote uses a protocol that the receiver cannot decode, raw pulse timing can still be useful when the transmitter can reproduce that timing accurately; it still requires physical testing with the specific appliance.
When should I use RF instead of infrared?
Use RF when the appliance or outlet is controlled by a compatible sub-GHz remote and IR line of sight is impractical. RF can pass through some obstacles and does not require aiming an LED, but the ESP32’s transmitter and receiver must match the device’s frequency and modulation. A different frequency or encoding will not become compatible through software alone.
ESPHome documents separate infrared and radio-frequency proxy platforms and supports raw timing transmission. Capture the original RF remote’s signal with a suitable receiver, identify the frequency and modulation, and replay it with a compatible transmitter. Antenna orientation, enclosure materials, distance, and local radio interference affect the result, so test from the final mounting location rather than assuming a nominal range.
RF commands can be as stateless as IR commands. If the original remote only sends “toggle,” the ESP32 cannot infer whether the appliance accepted the command or what mode it entered. Build automations around known starting conditions, explicit waits, and a recovery action instead of rapidly repeating a toggle.
Is a smart plug a better option for simple on/off control?
A correctly rated, certified smart plug is the most reversible way to automate an appliance’s power connection without modifying the appliance enclosure. It is appropriate when the appliance safely resumes the desired behavior after power is restored and when you only need power cycling rather than mode-level control.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Treat the plug as a separate electrical product. Match its voltage, current capacity, load type, and local certification to the appliance and your jurisdiction. Motors, heaters, compressors, and other loads can have starting or continuous characteristics that make a plug unsuitable even when the appliance’s printed wattage appears modest. Keep the ESP32 itself isolated from mains voltage.
Some plugs report electrical consumption. That measurement can show that current is flowing or that the appliance appears idle, but it does not prove the appliance’s internal mode, temperature, cycle stage, or fault condition. A powered appliance can be asleep, waiting, finished, or malfunctioning while drawing similar power.
How do IR, RF, and plug control compare?
| Method | Compatibility requirement | Feedback available | Placement and range | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IR bridge | The appliance must accept an IR remote signal that can be learned and replayed. | Usually command-only; state is not confirmed unless the appliance provides another status path. | Requires line of sight between the transmitter and the appliance’s IR receiver. | Televisions, air conditioners, audio equipment, and other remote-controlled appliances. | Missed commands, blocked receivers, and toggle controls can leave the actual state unknown. |
| RF bridge | The remote and ESP32 radio path must use a matching frequency and modulation. | Usually command-only unless a separate status mechanism exists. | Does not need optical alignment, but range, antenna orientation, walls, and interference matter. | Compatible sub-GHz remotes and wireless outlets. | Frequency or protocol mismatch prevents control; raw captures still require device-specific testing. |
| Smart plug | Power cycling must be acceptable, and the plug must be rated for the voltage, current, load type, and region. | May report electrical behavior, not the appliance’s internal state. | Wi-Fi coverage is needed for control; the plug remains at the outlet. | Simple on/off operation and reversible installations. | It cannot select modes and may be unsafe or ineffective for appliances that do not recover correctly after power loss. |
How do I design automations that fail safely?
Remote control is less reliable than a wired status signal because the command can be lost without an acknowledgment. Design the automation so a missed packet, Wi-Fi outage, reboot, or power restoration does not create a dangerous or confusing sequence.
Use known starting conditions
Prefer an appliance state that you can establish before sending a sequence. For example, a script that assumes the appliance is off can send one power command and then configure the mode. A script that blindly sends a toggle twice may leave the appliance unchanged if one command is missed.
Recommended Free Tools
Space commands deliberately
Insert explicit delays between power, mode, temperature, and other commands. Appliances often need time to wake, switch inputs, or accept a new setting. Avoid rapid retries that could turn a toggle control back off or queue conflicting actions.

Provide a manual fallback
Keep the original remote accessible, or provide a physical control for the smart plug. A dashboard button is useful, but it does not help if Wi-Fi or the home-automation server is unavailable. Document which button or plug action restores normal operation.
Test restart and outage behavior
Turn off Wi-Fi, reboot the ESP32, restore power to the appliance, and restart Home Assistant one at a time. Observe whether the appliance resumes its previous mode, remains off, or requires a manual command. Configure startup behavior only after observing the specific appliance; there is no universal recovery rule.
What are the most common installation problems?
- IR commands work only nearby: Recheck LED alignment, line of sight, and the transmitter’s drive circuit. Move the LED to the appliance’s receiver window rather than simply moving the ESP32 closer.
- The receiver shows unreadable data: Verify the receiver wiring and supply voltage, reduce ambient light interference, and try capturing raw timings instead of relying only on automatic protocol decoding.
- RF works in one room but not another: Check frequency and modulation, improve antenna orientation, and test from the final location. Walls, metal enclosures, and radio interference can reduce the usable range.
- The command appears in Home Assistant but nothing happens: Confirm that the ESPHome device is online, the transmitter component is configured, and the learned command belongs to the same appliance and remote. Test the transmitter locally before debugging the automation.
- The appliance changes unpredictably: Look for toggle commands, duplicate triggers, short retry intervals, or automations that run again after a restart. Replace ambiguous toggles with a sequence based on a known starting state where possible.
- A smart plug resets the appliance incorrectly: Stop using power cycling until you verify the appliance’s documented behavior after power restoration. Some equipment needs a physical start action, while other equipment may restart immediately.
What should I verify before installing the bridge permanently?
- Identify the appliance’s existing control method: IR, compatible RF, or power-only.
- Confirm Wi-Fi coverage at the intended ESP32 or plug location.
- For IR, locate the appliance’s receiver window and maintain clear line of sight.
- For RF, confirm the transmitter and receiver frequency and modulation match the original system.
- Capture and label every required command, including whether each one is a toggle or a discrete action.
- Test commands manually before attaching schedules or complex automations.
- Check behavior after appliance power loss, ESP32 reboot, Wi-Fi loss, and Home Assistant restart.
- Keep mains switching inside a certified, correctly rated plug product and keep all ESP32 connections low voltage.
What can this approach not guarantee?
An external ESP32 bridge cannot guarantee universal appliance support. It depends on the appliance accepting the reproduced signal, the transmitter being positioned correctly, the wireless network being available, and the appliance recovering predictably from commands or power changes. IR and RF are often one-way controls, so a successful transmission is not the same as confirmed execution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an ESP32 report the appliance’s exact current mode?
Not from a one-way IR or RF command alone. Unless the appliance exposes a separate status interface, the bridge knows what it transmitted, not whether the appliance accepted it or which internal mode is active.
Does the ESP32 need Home Assistant to send remote commands?
ESPHome provides its own automation capabilities, so some actions can run on the ESP32 itself. Home Assistant adds centralized scheduling, dashboards, scenes, and access to the ESPHome proxy through its native API.
Is RF always more reliable than IR?
No. RF avoids optical line-of-sight problems, but it is dependent on exact frequency, modulation, antenna placement, range, and interference. A well-positioned IR LED can be more dependable than an incompatible or poorly placed RF transmitter.
