On a new iPhone, an eSIM is the built-in digital SIM that stores your carrier plan without a removable card. Activation still depends on your carrier: you may transfer service from a nearby iPhone, accept a carrier notification, scan a QR code, use a carrier link or app, or enter activation details manually. The phone model, sales region, iOS version and carrier determine which method appears.
For an old-iPhone transfer, keep both phones nearby on Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, sign in to the same Apple Account and use iOS 18.4 or later. Do not erase or trade in the old phone until a call from the new iPhone succeeds, because a successful transfer deactivates the previous SIM.
What is an eSIM on an iPhone, and who controls it?
An eSIM is an industry-standard digital SIM built into the iPhone, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. The embedded component holds the carrier plan electronically; it does not itself provide cellular service or choose a provider. Your carrier still creates, authorizes and activates the subscription.

When a new plan activates, iOS downloads the carrier profile and registers the line on the network. A transfer or replacement normally turns off the old SIM for that line. That is why testing a call before wiping the old phone is an important safety step.
Which iPhone models and software versions support eSIM?
Apple lists iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later as the starting point for eSIM-compatible hardware. The available functions are not identical across all generations. Carrier policy, the exact model number, the country where the phone was sold and the region where it is being used can change what you can do.
- iOS 18.4 or later: required for the documented eSIM Quick Transfer flow between nearby iPhones.
- iOS 17.4 or later: lets you press and hold a QR code received in the default email app or browser to add an eSIM.
- iOS 26 or later: Apple says some carriers and selected smartphone makers support direct transfer from Android, and that more than one phone number can be transferred when the carrier supports it.
Before beginning, install the latest iOS your model supports, confirm that the carrier accepts eSIM for your plan and check the model’s sales region. A compatible-looking Settings menu is not proof that your carrier or region allows activation.

How do I transfer my eSIM to my new iPhone?
Use eSIM Quick Transfer when both phones are iPhones and your carrier offers the feature. The process can happen while setting up the new phone or afterward.
Prepare both iPhones
- Sign in to both devices with the same Apple Account.
- Unlock the old iPhone and know its device passcode.
- Place the phones close together and turn on Bluetooth.
- Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or a personal hotspot. A local eSIM-only model may be able to activate without Wi-Fi, but Wi-Fi is the safer assumption.
- Update both phones to iOS 18.4 or later if Quick Transfer is not appearing.
Transfer during initial setup
- Turn on the new iPhone and proceed through setup until cellular service is offered.
- Select the option to transfer a number or cellular plan from a nearby iPhone.
- Approve the request on the old iPhone. If the new phone displays a verification code, enter it on the old phone when prompted.
- Wait for the new iPhone to show that the plan is active. The old SIM is deactivated when activation completes.
- Make an outgoing call, receive a call and test cellular data before erasing, returning or trading in the old iPhone.
Transfer after setup
- On the new iPhone, open Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM. Some regions label Cellular as Mobile Data.
- Choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
- Confirm the transfer on the old phone or enter the verification code shown on the new phone.
- Wait for the carrier status to change to active, then perform the call and data checks.
If the transfer option is missing, that usually indicates carrier or regional eligibility rather than a damaged eSIM. Use the carrier’s QR, link, app or manual method instead, or ask the carrier to enable eSIM Carrier Activation.
How do I activate a new iPhone without a SIM card?
You can activate without a physical card if the carrier supports one of the digital provisioning methods. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi during setup unless your model and carrier explicitly support activation over another connection.
Carrier-assigned activation
Some carriers assign the eSIM when you buy the iPhone or send a notification afterward. Look for “Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed”. Tap it, continue through the Settings screens, allow the plan to be added and place a call to verify service. If the call fails after the plan appears installed, contact the carrier; repeating the installation can create confusion without fixing a network-side issue.

QR-code activation
- During setup, select Use QR Code when that option is offered.
- Point the Camera at the QR code supplied by the carrier and follow Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
- If the phone is already set up, open Camera, scan the code and accept the same prompts.
- On iOS 17.4 or later, press and hold a QR code displayed in the default email app or browser, then choose the option to add the eSIM instead of scanning another screen.
A QR code is generally issued for a specific line or installation. If it has already been used, expired or was generated for a different device, request a replacement from the carrier rather than trying random codes.
Carrier link or app
Tap the provider’s activation link and approve the Activate New eSIM prompt. If the provider uses an app, install it from the App Store, sign in to the carrier account and follow its activation or transfer flow. The app may still require identity verification or a one-time code controlled by the carrier.
Manual entry
- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
- Choose Enter Details Manually.
- Enter exactly the SM-DP+ address and activation information supplied by the carrier.
- Save the plan, wait for network registration and test a call and cellular data.
Manual entry is not a substitute for carrier credentials. Do not invent a server address or activation code; only the provider can supply values that match your subscription.

Sometimes, but it is not universal. Apple says iOS 26 or later supports direct Android-to-iPhone transfer with some carriers and selected smartphone makers. The option appears only when the specific Android model, new iPhone, carrier and regional service all qualify.

If a direct transfer prompt does not appear, contact the carrier and ask for eSIM Carrier Activation or a new QR code for the iPhone. Keep the Android phone active until the iPhone has service; otherwise you may lose the ability to receive a verification message needed to complete the change.
Why is my carrier eSIM not activating?
Most failures are eligibility, connectivity or carrier-provisioning problems rather than a fault in the iPhone’s eSIM hardware. Work through these checks in order.
The transfer option is absent
- Confirm both iPhones use the same Apple Account and that the old phone is unlocked.
- Turn on Bluetooth, move the phones close together and connect the new phone to Wi-Fi.
- Verify iOS 18.4 or later on both devices.
- Ask the carrier whether Quick Transfer is supported for your exact plan and region.
The QR code will not add a plan
- Use a stable Wi-Fi connection and scan the original code supplied for your line.
- Try the press-and-hold method in the default email app or browser on iOS 17.4 or later.
- If iOS says the code is invalid or already used, ask the carrier to issue a fresh code.
The plan installs but there is no service
- Restart the iPhone and check the line under Settings > Cellular.
- Make sure the intended line is turned on and selected for cellular data if multiple plans are present.
- Test a call outdoors or in a known coverage area.
- Contact the carrier to confirm that the subscription is active on the new device and that any number-porting or identity check is complete.
Do not erase the old phone, remove its eSIM or cancel the line until the new iPhone can make and receive calls. A carrier may need the old device’s identifiers or a confirmation code to repair a failed activation.
How do model and regional rules change eSIM setup?
General iPhone instructions cannot override regional hardware or regulatory limits. Apple’s current guidance gives China mainland as a specific example: only iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM there. Hong Kong and Macao include models with two nano-SIM cards, so a phone bought in one market may not behave like the same named model sold elsewhere.

Check the model number, sales region and the carrier’s local eSIM policy before buying or importing a phone. A device that supports eSIM in one country may have different SIM hardware, disabled functions or different activation choices in another.
How many eSIMs can an iPhone store and use?
Apple says an iPhone can manage “up to eight or more eSIMs.” That describes stored plans, not necessarily simultaneous service. The number that can be active at once depends on the iPhone model and carrier configuration.
When iOS 26 or later and the carrier support it, more than one phone number can be transferred to a new iPhone. Label each line in Cellular settings, choose the default voice and data lines deliberately and test the intended number before disabling an old plan.
What should I check before and after activation?
Before starting
- Confirm the iPhone model and sales region support the desired eSIM function.
- Verify carrier support for Quick Transfer, carrier activation, QR, app, link or manual provisioning.
- Back up the old phone and keep it powered on.
- Have the Apple Account password, old-phone passcode, carrier account credentials and any QR code or activation details ready.
- Arrange Wi-Fi or a hotspot and keep both phones nearby when transferring.
After the plan appears active
- Place an outgoing call and receive an incoming call.
- Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and load a webpage over cellular data.
- Send and receive a text message if messaging is part of the line.
- Confirm the correct number and default data line in Settings > Cellular.
- Only then erase, trade in or return the old phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an eSIM while traveling internationally?
Yes, if the iPhone is unlocked and the destination provider offers an eSIM plan compatible with your model and region. Add the travel line before departure when possible, then select which line handles data and whether the home line should remain on for calls or messages.
Will deleting an eSIM cancel my carrier account?
Deleting a cellular plan from the iPhone removes the profile from that device, but it does not necessarily cancel billing or the underlying account. Ask the carrier to cancel or suspend service separately, and obtain a replacement eSIM if you still need the number.
Can I keep a physical SIM and an eSIM active together?
Some iPhone models and carrier configurations support dual-SIM operation with one physical SIM and one eSIM, while others rely on two eSIMs. The exact combination is model- and region-dependent, so check the Cellular settings after adding both lines.
What happens if I lose the old iPhone during a transfer?
Quick Transfer requires the nearby old phone for its approval step. Contact the carrier from another device and request Carrier Activation, a replacement QR code or manual provisioning after completing its identity checks.
