Electronic chessboards detect changes in piece positions with built-in sensors, then send position or move data to compatible software. An app or chess program interprets that data and updates the online game. The exact sensing method, required pieces, connection, and supported chess services depend on the board model.
How an electronic chessboard detects a move
A physical move changes the position of one or more pieces on the board. Sensors register the resulting board state; depending on the model, the system may report occupied squares, piece identities, or another representation. The board then sends that information to connected software.
For example, DGT says its Bluetooth e-Board uses electromagnetic resonance to detect its electronic pieces, called e-Pieces. That method and piece requirement apply to this DGT model; they should not be assumed for every electronic chessboard. See the DGT Bluetooth e-Board user manual.
How board data reaches an online game
The board communicates with an app or computer, and that software handles the connection to the chess service. The board itself does not necessarily connect directly to the online platform: the compatible software reads the board data and keeps the digital game position in sync.

Position reporting over Bluetooth
Chessnut’s published eBoards API documents a Bluetooth Low Energy service with a notification channel for position data, including a command to enable real-time FEN reporting. FEN, or Forsyth–Edwards Notation, describes a chess position. This is one manufacturer’s documented interface, not a universal standard for electronic boards. See the Chessnut eBoards API documentation.
USB and Bluetooth connections
DGT documents both USB and Bluetooth use for its Bluetooth e-Board, but only one communication option can be used at a time. Check the board’s manual and the connected device’s requirements to confirm which connection fits your setup.

Connecting to a chess platform
Chessnut says its Move board connects through the Chessnut app to Chess.com, Lichess, and other major online platforms. This is a manufacturer’s support description; actual setup and availability can depend on the board, app, firmware, and platform. The Chessnut Move product page describes its integrations.
What to check before choosing a board
- What the board detects: Look for documentation for the exact model. Do not assume it identifies each piece simply because it can register a position.
- Which pieces it requires: DGT says its Bluetooth e-Board requires an electronic chess set and lists compatible e-Pieces in its manual. Ordinary pieces or a third-party set may not work with a board that requires electronic pieces.
- How it connects: Confirm whether the model supports USB, Bluetooth, or another connection, and check device and operating-system requirements.
- Which app supports your platform: Verify the full path from the board through its app or computer software to the online service you want to use. Compatibility for one model does not establish compatibility for all electronic boards.
- How you handle the opponent’s move: Some setups show the opponent’s move for you to reproduce physically. Chessnut describes automatic opponent-piece movement on Move; confirm that feature for the exact model before relying on it.
Why a move might not register or sync
First check that the physical position is registered correctly and that the board is connected to the intended app. Then confirm that you are using the required pieces and that the board, app, and chosen online service support the same workflow.

For DGT’s Bluetooth e-Board, the manual warns that strong nearby signal transmitters can cause spontaneous incorrect detections, described as “ghost pieces.” It also cautions that metal surfaces or objects on or near the board may reduce sensitivity, and mentions nearby screens, speakers, and power adapters. These are troubleshooting cautions for that model, not a quantified failure rate or a rule established for every electronic chessboard. If you encounter detection problems, try moving the board away from those potential sources and check its manual.
Available manufacturer documentation does not establish a universal compatibility standard or comparative accuracy and latency figures. A specific board’s documentation and supported app workflow are the practical guides for what it can detect and where it can play online.
