In IFBOT’s “UAV Intelligent PV Cleaning System,” the UAV deploys and retrieves ground-level cleaning robots; the robots perform the panel cleaning. That hybrid approach is one of several automation designs, and the right fit depends on the site’s layout, tracker geometry, water access, cleaning schedule and labor model.
What the drone does in a hybrid cleaning system
IFBOT describes its UAV system as “combining aerial precision with ground-level cleaning power.” In this arrangement, the drone’s stated role is to autonomously deploy and retrieve cleaning robots. The ground robots, rather than the drone, clean the panels. IFBOT lists commercial rooftops and high-tilt or sun-tracking panels as intended use cases. These capabilities are manufacturer descriptions; the reviewed material does not include independent validation.
This distinction matters when comparing systems: a drone-assisted workflow is not the same as a drone-mounted cleaning payload. Solar Drone describes drone cleaning and inspection payloads for energy infrastructure, but its reviewed page does not specify that drones deliver ground robots.
How the main automation designs differ
| Design | How it works | What the vendor says |
|---|---|---|
| Drone-supported ground robot | A UAV deploys and retrieves ground-level cleaning robots. | IFBOT calls this its “UAV Intelligent PV Cleaning System” and identifies commercial rooftops and high-tilt or sun-tracking panels as use cases. |
| Portable cleaning robots | Robots are brought to the work area rather than permanently installed across panel rows. | IFBOT describes its X3 as a dry-cleaning robot and its M20 as a water-powered robot for tougher grime. IFBOT says the X3 can operate at tilt angles up to 50 degrees; this is a manufacturer claim. |
| Utility-scale nightly robots | Robots clean arrays on a recurring schedule, with solutions designed for different row configurations. | Ecoppia describes separate systems for single-axis trackers and fixed-tilt installations. It says its robots operate without water, carry solar modules, self-clean their microfiber elements, and can be started or stopped remotely. |
| Row-based and semi-automatic systems | Equipment is moved from row to row by people or installed on each row for remote operation. | INTI-TECH describes a robot moved between rows by two technicians and a SmartDuster designed for permanent installation on each panel row with remote operation. Its SunSight IT4 cleans pyranometers and has direct SCADA integration. |
How to compare systems for a particular site
Start with the array and its maintenance routine, not the headline technology. A system designed for fixed-tilt rows may not suit a tracking installation, while steep slopes, gaps, access routes or rooftop constraints can affect whether a robot can move safely and consistently.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Row and tracker geometry: Check whether the product is intended for fixed-tilt rows, single-axis trackers, rooftops or another configuration. Confirm how it handles row ends, gaps and panel edges.
- Slope and access: Identify steep panels, uneven terrain, restricted routes and areas that require a technician or UAV to move equipment.
- Water and soiling: Compare water availability and the type of grime at the site. A dry-cleaning system avoids water use, while a water-powered robot may be positioned for tougher grime according to its manufacturer.
- Cleaning frequency: Match the operating model to how often the array needs cleaning. Ecoppia describes nightly operation; portable or technician-moved systems may suit a different schedule.
- Labor and autonomy: Establish whether technicians must transport or position the robot, whether a UAV handles deployment and retrieval, and what tasks can be scheduled or controlled remotely.
- Monitoring and operations: Check remote start/stop, monitoring integrations and coordination with existing site procedures. INTI-TECH specifically describes SCADA integration for its pyranometer-cleaning product.
- Warranty and panel compatibility: Confirm with the panel and system vendors that the cleaning method, contact materials and operating plan are compatible with equipment warranties and site rules.
These comparisons do not establish a universal best option. The reviewed product information is primarily vendor-published, and it contains no independent head-to-head performance results for drone-assisted versus fixed robotic cleaning.
What the published scale figures do—and do not—show
Ecoppia’s undated homepage displays counters of more than 35 large-scale sites, more than 5,000 MW in deployments, 10.51 million autonomous cleaning sessions and 3.89 billion panels cleaned. Its technology page says the company has more than 50 granted patents. These are company-published figures; the pages supply no publication year, and the homepage counters are dynamic. They should not be treated as dated independent industry statistics or as proof that one system outperforms another.

Ecoppia also says its robots remove soiling nightly using water-free cleaning technology, describing it as “eco-friendly and cost effective.” That wording is the company’s claim, not an independent finding. INTI-TECH’s page hosts a customer testimonial from Diego García, identified there as Innovation Manager at Colbún, about automating pyranometer cleaning; the page does not date the statement.

Because the reviewed claims are largely from manufacturers, compare proposals using the same site conditions and ask vendors to show how their stated capabilities apply to your array. Request configuration-specific details rather than assuming a general product description covers every panel, tracker or slope.
