Token0 is an Apache-2.0 API proxy that reduces vision-model spending by changing how images are prepared, routed, and reused before they reach a provider. Its maintainer, Pritom Mazumdar, reports a projected 98.9% reduction for a specific GPT-4o cost scenario, not a guaranteed result for every workload. The proxy can resize images, extract document text, choose detail levels, route simple requests to cheaper models, and serve cached answers while keeping an OpenAI-compatible response shape.

The practical way to evaluate it is to run the same traffic through /v1/estimate and then the proxy, inspect the token0 fields in responses, and compare your own provider bill. Savings depend on image dimensions, text density, prompt difficulty, model pricing, cache hits, and the mix of requests.

What does Token0’s 98.9% cost-cut claim actually mean?

The 98.9% figure is a maintainer-authored projection for GPT-4o usage at 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000 images per day. It compares a direct-cost scenario with a Token0-cost scenario using OpenAI’s published image-token formulas. It is not an independent benchmark, a universal guarantee, or a measurement from a local model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because Token0’s savings are workload-dependent. A text-heavy invoice can become a small text request after extraction, while a detailed photograph may still need substantial visual processing. A cache-heavy application can save far more than a stream of unique images, and a model cascade can change both quality and price.

What the project reports on local vision models

The original five-image benchmark reported these token reductions:

Model Reported saving Scope
moondream 36.3% Five real-world images
llava-llama3 31.2% Five real-world images
minicpm-v 25.9% Five real-world images
llava:7b 24.2% Five real-world images

The v0.2.0 expanded suite reported different results across broader categories:

Model Reported saving in v0.2.0 suite
minicpm-v 42.3%
moondream 37.8%
llava-llama3 36.5%
llava:7b 35.0%

Those percentages are project benchmarks, not an independently reproduced accuracy or cost study. Treat them as indications of what the optimization pipeline did on the author’s chosen images and categories.

Why do vision requests consume so many tokens?

Vision APIs do not charge only for the words in your prompt. Providers convert an image into a billed representation that depends on resolution, detail mode, tiling rules, and model. Sending pixels that a provider will later discard is therefore an avoidable expense.

Example in the project documentation Higher-cost representation Lower-cost alternative
4,000 × 3,000 photograph sent to a model that downsizes to 1,568 px About 1,590 Claude tokens after provider downscaling Resize before upload to the model’s effective maximum
Document screenshot About 765 GPT-4.1 image tokens About 30 tokens when its information is extracted as text
Simple classification About 1,105 tokens in high detail About 85 tokens in low detail
1,280 × 720 image under a 512-pixel tile scheme Four tiles, about 765 tokens Two tiles after resizing, about 425 tokens
Typed PDF invoice About 765 image tokens About 50 text tokens after text-layer extraction

These are documentation examples, not measurements you should assume for every provider or image. The package description also gives a two-page invoice example in which roughly 1,530 vision tokens become roughly 80 text tokens after extracting the PDF text layer.

How does Token0 work under the hood?

A request follows this path: your application → Token0 proxy → analyze → classify → route → transform → cache → LLM provider. The proxy records optimization decisions and savings in a database, then returns an OpenAI-compatible response with additional accounting information.

1. Smart resizing removes pixels the model will not process

Token0 examines the target model and scales an image toward the provider’s effective limit. The documentation cites 1,568 pixels for Claude and 2,048 pixels for GPT-4.1. Resizing before upload avoids paying for source resolution that would be discarded upstream and also reduces transfer time.

2. OCR routing turns documents into text requests

The classifier looks for signals associated with screenshots, receipts, invoices, and other text-heavy images: uniform backgrounds, color variance, horizontal-line structure, and edge density. When the image is likely to be a document, Token0 extracts text and sends that representation instead of the original pixels. The original description reports 91% validation accuracy for this heuristic; that figure is an author report rather than a formal accuracy study.

Text extraction is especially valuable for forms and receipts because the semantic payload is usually the characters, not the visual texture. Photographs, charts, handwriting, and layouts where spatial appearance matters may not benefit as much.

3. PDF text layers bypass image encoding

For a typed PDF, Token0 uses pypdf to read the embedded text layer. A scanned PDF without a text layer falls back to passthrough, so it remains an image request unless another OCR system is added. This is an important operational boundary: PDF extension alone does not guarantee a text-only path.

4. PNG screenshots can be recompressed as JPEG

When transparency is unnecessary, the proxy converts PNG input to an optimized JPEG. That lowers payload size and upload time. It is a transport optimization, not a promise that every image will retain identical pixel-level detail; avoid it when an alpha channel is part of the meaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Prompt-aware detail mode controls image fidelity

Token0 uses the prompt to distinguish simple classification or description from demanding extraction. It can select low detail for the former and high detail for the latter. The project’s example compares about 85 low-detail tokens with about 1,105 high-detail tokens, showing why a single fixed detail setting can waste money on easy requests.

6. Tile-aware resizing targets billing boundaries

For OpenAI-style billing, the proxy resizes toward 512 × 512 tile boundaries. In the documented 1,280 × 720 example, moving from four tiles (about 765 tokens) to two (about 425 tokens) is described as a 44% saving. The exact result depends on the provider’s current image-token formula and the final dimensions.

7. Model cascades reserve expensive models for hard cases

Token0 can route simple requests to a cheaper model while retaining a flagship model for complex work. Examples in the project include GPT-4o to GPT-4o-mini, Claude Opus to Claude Haiku, and GPT-4.1 family cascades that include mini and nano variants. A cascade trades some consistency and capability for lower average cost, so your routing rules should reflect the error tolerance of each task.

8. Semantic and fuzzy caching prevents repeat processing

The proxy caches image-plus-prompt responses using perceptual hashes. Its package description adds QJL-compressed fuzzy matching so visually similar images can reuse an answer, not only byte-for-byte duplicates. The project reports an additional 62% token saving in its benchmarks; cache hit rates in your application will determine whether that result is relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Video and accessibility-tree paths avoid redundant screenshots

For video, Token0 can extract and deduplicate keyframes rather than submit every frame. For browser content, it prefers a complete accessibility tree over a screenshot. It falls back to a screenshot for canvas, iframe, or video elements, where the tree cannot represent the visible content.

Which providers and deployment modes are supported?

The project lists OpenAI GPT-4.1 and GPT-4o families, Anthropic Claude Sonnet, Opus, and Haiku families, Google Gemini 2.5 Flash and Pro, and vision models served through Ollama. Provider support does not mean identical token accounting: each service has its own image limits, detail controls, and pricing formulas.

Lite mode uses SQLite and in-memory storage. Full mode is documented with PostgreSQL, Redis, and S3 or MinIO. Choose the lighter mode for a local proof of concept; use the full components when you need durable usage records, shared cache state, or multiple proxy instances.

How do I install and test Token0?

The shortest documented path is a Python package install, a local proxy, and an unchanged OpenAI-style client pointed at Token0.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the package: pip install token0.
  2. Start the proxy: token0 serve.
  3. Keep your upstream provider key out of application prompts and pass it in the X-Provider-Key header.
  4. Change the client base URL to http://localhost:8000/v1. The integration is designed around this base-URL change rather than rewriting prompts.
  5. Send a normal vision chat-completions request to POST /v1/chat/completions.
  6. Inspect the returned token0 object and compare original-token estimates, optimized tokens, tokens saved, cost saved, cache status, and cascade destination.

For a dry run, call POST /v1/estimate. It does not make an LLM call and does not require a provider key, making it suitable for checking representative images before changing production traffic.

Streaming and health checks

The documented endpoints also include GET /v1/usage for usage information and GET /health for a service check. Version 0.2.0 documents stream=true Server-Sent Events for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Ollama paths. Cached responses can also be emitted in chunks, so an SSE-capable client can keep the same user-interface behavior on cache hits.

How should I verify whether the savings apply to my workload?

Start with a sample that reflects production rather than a handful of unusually easy images. Mix photographs, screenshots, invoices, PDFs, repeated assets, and the prompts your users actually send.

  • Run each sample through /v1/estimate and record the original and optimized token estimates.
  • Measure cache hits separately from transformation savings; they have different scaling behavior.
  • Check answer quality for OCR, layout-sensitive tasks, charts, handwriting, and small text.
  • Compare latency and upload bandwidth after JPEG conversion and resizing.
  • Test cascade fallbacks so a difficult request is not silently handled by a model that is too weak.
  • Recheck provider pricing and image-token formulas before projecting monthly costs.

Keep the proxy’s accounting fields with your application metrics. A percentage calculated from one day of traffic can be misleading if that day contains an unusual cache hit rate or an atypical document mix.

What are the main failure modes and trade-offs?

Text is extracted when visual layout was the real signal

A receipt total may survive OCR, but alignment, color, handwriting, diagrams, and chart geometry can be lost when an image becomes plain text. Disable or bypass OCR routing for tasks that depend on appearance.

Downscaling makes small characters unreadable

Resizing to a provider’s maximum is economical only when the remaining resolution supports the task. High-detail extraction of tiny labels may require the original or a carefully chosen crop.

Fuzzy cache matches can be too permissive

Perceptual similarity is useful for repeated UI states and near-duplicate frames, but visually similar images can contain different values. Set conservative matching rules for invoices, identity documents, or any request where stale data is costly.

Cascades can change quality as well as price

A cheaper model may misread a complex diagram or fail to follow a long instruction. Define escalation conditions and sample outputs before enabling automatic routing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provider behavior changes over time

Token prices, image limits, tile formulas, and model names can change. Treat the 98.9% projection and the project’s benchmark percentages as baselines to validate, not permanent guarantees.

Is Token0 a good fit for my application?

It is most compelling when your traffic contains many oversized images, typed documents, repeated assets, or simple classification prompts. It is less likely to deliver dramatic reductions when every image is unique, already optimally sized, visually complex, and sent to a model that must inspect fine detail at high resolution.

The proxy’s value is therefore broader than one headline percentage: it gives you a single interception point for resizing, OCR decisions, model routing, caching, and usage accounting. Run the estimator and a quality-controlled pilot against your own request mix before treating any projected percentage as a budget number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I estimate Token0 savings without sending a provider key?

Yes. The documented POST /v1/estimate endpoint performs an estimate without an LLM call or provider key. You can use it in a staging or continuous-integration check to compare representative assets before enabling live routing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Token0 require rewriting my vision prompts?

No prompt rewrite is required for the documented integration. You point an OpenAI-compatible client at http://localhost:8000/v1 and pass the upstream credential in X-Provider-Key; the proxy handles transformations around the existing request.

Can a cached response still be delivered as a stream?

The v0.2.0 documentation says cached responses can be emitted in Server-Sent Events chunks when stream=true. This lets an SSE-capable client preserve its streaming interface even when no provider call is made.

What happens to a scanned PDF with no embedded text?

Token0’s documented PDF path uses pypdf to extract an existing text layer. A scanned PDF without that layer falls back to passthrough, so it remains an image request unless you place a separate OCR step before the proxy.
