The LEGO PlayStation 72306 is a near-1:1 display replica of Sony’s original 1994 PlayStation, not a working video-game system. Its brick-built Power and Open buttons, plug-in controller and removable Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes reproduce the look and handling ritual of the gray CD-era console, but there is no electronics, disc drive, video output or game support. The real PlayStation runs games from CDs and sends audio and video to a television. In short, the LEGO set offers collectible fidelity and a building experience; the original offers playable hardware.
What exactly is LEGO PlayStation 72306?
LEGO PlayStation 72306 is an 18+ adult construction set released in October 2026. It contains 1,911 pieces and builds a console, one controller and two hidden display scenes. The LEGO Group describes it as a “near 1:1 scale replica” of the original PlayStation, the system launched in 1994—not the current PS5.

One official PlayStation Direct page displays model number 72036, while the LEGO announcement and the product identity used in official announcements identify the set as 72306. Use 72306 when searching or referring to the product; the conflicting store metadata matters only when checking a retailer’s catalog record.

Is the LEGO PlayStation the same size as the real PS1?
It is intended to match the original console’s footprint and visible proportions closely. The LEGO dimensions—about 26 cm wide, 19 cm deep and 6 cm high—support the near-size claim, and a side-by-side comparison reports close matches in the shell, side ridges, rear ports, front controller sockets and underside feet.

The resemblance is most apparent from the top and front: the light-gray case, circular disc lid, front controls and ridged sides are all represented in bricks. The model is a display interpretation rather than an engineering copy, so internal electronics, a real optical mechanism and functional ports are absent. Its approximately 2.3 kg weight is a LEGO-set figure; the official sources used for this comparison do not establish one definitive weight for the original console.
What can the LEGO buttons and controller actually do?
The model has tactile mechanisms, but “functional” does not mean playable. Pressing the brick-built Power button raises a small green element that suggests the original indicator light. Pressing Open lifts the disc-lid mechanism and reveals the concealed scenes. The controller plugs into either front socket as a physical display feature.
- Power: moves a green LEGO element; it does not switch on electronics.
- Open: lifts the model’s lid mechanism; it does not operate a disc drive.
- Controller: connects mechanically to the model; its buttons send no game input.
- Dioramas: removable Gran Turismo and Ape Escape builds occupy the hidden interior; they are not discs or software.
Only one controller is included, so the package represents a console setup rather than a complete collection of the original system’s accessories.

Can the LEGO PlayStation play games or connect to a TV?
No. The set contains no processor, memory, optical reader, power circuitry, video connector or audio hardware. It cannot read PlayStation CDs, save to memory cards, reproduce the startup animation or display anything on a television.
The actual 1994 PlayStation is an electronic home console. Reference specifications identify a 33.87 MHz R3000 processor, 2 MB of RAM, CD-based game media, controller input and audio/video output. Those components let the original load and run games, produce sound and pictures, and use memory cards—capabilities the LEGO model deliberately does not attempt to reproduce.
How does it compare with the PS5?
The LEGO set should not be described as a PS5 model. It recreates the first-generation PlayStation, whereas Sony’s PS5 is a modern system with very different hardware and dimensions.

These are different reference points: the LEGO product is a nostalgic model of Sony’s first console, while the PS5 is a functioning current platform. A performance comparison between them would therefore be meaningless.
What details does the LEGO replica get right?
The strongest fidelity is visual and tactile. The gray shell, side ridges, controller connection points, rear-port shapes and underside feet echo the original hardware. Handling the lid and controller recreates the physical ritual of using the 1990s machine, while the hidden scenes add an exhibition feature that the real console never had.
The Gran Turismo and Ape Escape builds are best understood as miniature display sets. They reference games associated with PlayStation history, but they contain no playable content and do not turn the model into a game system.

Is LEGO PlayStation 72306 worth $179.99?
Its value depends on what you want. At $179.99 in the United States (with listed prices of €159.99 and £139.99), it is priced as a premium licensed adult display set, not as a substitute for buying a functioning console.
- Choose the LEGO set if you value licensed memorabilia, building, accurate shelf presentation and interactive-looking mechanisms.
- Choose functioning hardware if your priority is playing original software, using real discs, connecting controllers or hearing the startup sound.
- Consider both if the model is for display and you separately want access to games through original hardware or a compatible modern platform.
SIE Senior Director of Licensed Merchandise Steffi Steffen said the collaboration was designed to create “a building experience that is inspired by PlayStation’s origins” (PlayStation.Blog, 2026). That description fits the product better than calling it a replica console in the electronic sense.

Does LEGO PlayStation 72306 include a real PlayStation controller?
No. It includes one brick-built controller made for the model. It plugs into either front socket for display, but it is not an electronic controller and cannot operate a console.

Can the hidden Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes be removed?
Yes. Both dioramas are designed to be removable from the console model, allowing the interior scenes to be shown separately or kept concealed. They are miniature builds rather than game cartridges or discs.
Why does one store page show model number 72036?
An official PlayStation Direct listing contains a conflicting model-number field. The LEGO announcement and the product identity used in official announcements call the set 72306, which is the number to use for product searches.
Is LEGO PlayStation 72306 a limited edition?
The stated release information gives launch dates and standard regional prices but does not establish a limited-edition production run. Availability can therefore vary by retailer and inventory rather than by a published end date.

Does the set include two controllers for multiplayer display?
No. The package includes one controller. The original console supported additional accessories, but reproducing a full multiplayer hardware bundle is outside this set’s contents.
