An automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) stores identified inventory in assigned locations and uses software, controls, and automated equipment to retrieve it when needed. Depending on the load, that equipment may be an aisle-running crane, a shuttle, a lift, a carousel, or a mobile robot. The system then hands the load to a conveyor, workstation, or another process.
In a goods-to-person setup, inventory moves to a stationary operator instead of requiring the operator to walk to each storage location. The equipment and software are parts of one configured material flow, not a single machine.
How does an AS/RS work?
The operating cycle has five functional stages. A facility may arrange the equipment, buffers, workstations, and software differently, but the underlying work is to identify inventory, put it away, track it, and retrieve it on request.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Receive and identify the load. Inventory arrives from receiving or replenishment and is associated with inventory data. In some shuttle installations, decant stations prepare smaller units before storage.
- Assign a storage location. Warehouse software tracks inventory and assigns or selects a location appropriate to the operation.
- Move the load into storage. An aisle-running crane can travel horizontally and position a carriage vertically at the selected rack level. A handling device then reaches into the rack. In shuttle systems, powered vehicles move loads along storage levels; lifts may connect levels.
- Track inventory and issue work. The software records where inventory is stored and releases tasks when an order, replenishment need, or production process calls for it.
- Retrieve and hand off the load. A crane, shuttle, lift, or other mechanism removes the load and transfers it to a conveyor or presentation station for the next step.
That next step may be picking, order consolidation, packing, shipping, or supply to production. The handoff and the capacity of downstream equipment affect whether the full operation can keep pace.

What are the main types of AS/RS?
Architecture names are not universal performance standards. Compare the loads a proposed system handles, how it reaches them, and how it connects to people and adjacent equipment.
| Architecture | Typical loads and movement | Often considered for | Questions to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit-load crane | An aisle-running crane and load-handling device move pallets or other heavy loads. | Pallet storage and high-bay operations. | What are the load dimensions and weight, aisle layout, storage height, throughput requirement, and retrieval pattern? |
| Mini-load crane | A crane and extractor or similar device move smaller loads such as cartons, trays, and totes. | Smaller-item storage and goods-to-person flows. | Which containers are used, what are the load limits, and how do SKU and order patterns fit the workstation interface? |
| Shuttle AS/RS | Powered shuttles move cases, totes, or pallets along storage levels. Lifts and conveyors may connect levels to workstations. | High-volume, sequenced, or goods-to-person operations. | What throughput is required, how are shuttles and lifts arranged, what redundancy is provided, and can downstream processes handle the output? |
| Vertical lift module or carousel | A lift presents trays, or a carousel rotates stored items to an access point. | Smaller parts and items picked at an operator station. | How do item dimensions, order frequency, ergonomics, available space, and replenishment needs compare? |
| Cube-based or mobile system | Robots travel on a grid or through a storage area to bring bins or cases to workstations. | Operations seeking robotic access to stored units in a configurable layout. | How do storage density, robot traffic, retrieval performance, expansion plans, and system integration fit the operation? |
What do the software and controls do?
The software layer keeps track of inventory and coordinates work, but the boundaries between systems vary by installation. A proposal may assign inventory records and task release to a warehouse management system (WMS), execution coordination to a warehouse execution system (WES), equipment coordination to a warehouse control system (WCS), and machine-level actions to a control platform. Those labels and responsibilities are not identical across providers.

For example, Honeywell describes its shuttle solution as using a WES and machine-control platform for functions that include status visibility, fault alerts, order allocation, release prioritization, and station assignment. Konecranes describes a WMS receiving commands from an operator or a manufacturing execution system (MES) or enterprise resource planning system (ERP), then commanding cranes and interfacing with conveyor controls. These are examples of implementations, not a universal software blueprint.
When evaluating a system, establish which component owns inventory truth, task prioritization, equipment commands, conveyor handoffs, and exception handling. Also map how receiving or decant, buffers, picking stations, packing, shipping, and production interfaces fit together; storage equipment alone does not define the entire material flow.

What can an AS/RS improve, and how should performance claims be read?
Depending on design, an AS/RS can use vertical space, reduce the walking and manual travel associated with picking, and support replenishment, sequencing, buffering, order consolidation, or manufacturing supply. A goods-to-person layout adds conveyors and a station that presents inventory to an operator.
Honeywell says its shuttle solution can “Increase throughput and density up to 40 percent over traditional picking methods.” This is a vendor claim for that solution; the product page does not state a publication year or comparison methodology. It is not a general AS/RS result. The available evidence does not establish a broadly applicable independent productivity or cost figure, so a quoted labor reduction, accuracy rate, or payback should be evaluated against the operation’s own baseline, load mix, operating hours, and downstream constraints.

What safety and maintenance issues matter?
Automated storage areas need coordinated access rules, protective controls, and a site-specific safety design. Konecranes describes an arrangement in which access is synchronized with crane operation and entry is allowed when the crane is in standby. Its examples also include conveyor handoff signals, overload and overspeed protection, motion limits, and emergency stops. These examples are not a complete safety specification; applicable local requirements and a site-specific risk assessment still govern.

Maintenance planning should account for the equipment, operating environment, manufacturer recommendations, and statutory requirements. Konecranes describes preventive maintenance around those factors, while Honeywell describes lifecycle support and spare-parts services for its own system. Ask how faults are diagnosed, how access is controlled during service, what recovery procedures apply, and what support and parts are available for the proposed equipment.

How should you compare AS/RS proposals?
Start with the operation’s loads and workflow, then test whether each proposed architecture can meet them from inbound handoff through the downstream process. Establish the following before comparing performance projections:
- Load profile: unit type, dimensions, weight, fragility, and pallet or container standard.
- Demand: SKU count, order profile, peak periods, replenishment needs, and required throughput.
- Facility: storage height, building constraints, aisle layout, and target storage density.
- Process interfaces: inbound and outbound handoffs, workstations, buffers, and the capacity of packing, shipping, or production processes.
- Software responsibilities: ownership of inventory records, task release, equipment control, interfaces, and exception handling.
- Operations and support: redundancy, fault recovery, safety design, controlled access, maintenance approach, provider support, and spare parts.
- Project scope: commissioning responsibilities, lifecycle costs, and the baseline and assumptions behind performance or payback estimates.
No single architecture fits every operation. The useful comparison is the actual proposed configuration and its fit with the facility, loads, workflow, and support model—not the architecture label alone.
