Agentforce makes an AI agent’s critical UI deterministic by taking the presentation choice away from the language model. A builder binds a specific action to a response format with the render: directive; when that action executes, the Connections layer applies the configured format instead of asking the model to select a component. The model still interprets requests, chooses subagents and plans actions probabilistically, but the configured form, disclosure or approval interface follows a platform-enforced rendering path. Salesforce describes this as a 100% guarantee for that presentation decision—not a guarantee that every part of an agent conversation is deterministic.
What does Agentforce’s 100% deterministic-rendering guarantee actually cover?
The guarantee covers the configured presentation decision for a selected action and its action lifecycle. If an action is bound to a required response format, Agentforce does not rely on a prompt for the model to remember which component to show. The platform identifies that action and attaches the configured format to its output.
That scope matters. Intent interpretation, subagent selection, action planning and open-ended text generation remain probabilistic unless you constrain them with additional controls such as Agent Script. Deterministic rendering therefore solves a precise reliability problem: making a required interface appear when a particular action runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Covered: the renderer or response format selected for the configured action.
- Still probabilistic: how the agent understands an open-ended request, which subagent it selects and what unconstrained answer it writes.
- Lifecycle dependent: for supervised or long-running actions, the UI appears after approval and execution complete.
- Auditable: rendering events are recorded for the action and session.
How does Agentforce separate probabilistic reasoning from deterministic presentation?
Agentforce places a deterministic boundary between deciding what to do and deciding how a critical result must be displayed. The model can remain flexible where flexibility is useful, while the platform controls the presentation where omission would create operational, legal or user-experience risk.

1. The reasoning engine interprets the request
The reasoning engine analyzes the conversation, determines the relevant subagent and selects actions. This stage supports natural-language variation and open-ended workflows, so it is not inherently repeatable from one interaction to the next.
2. A builder marks the critical action
For an action such as collecting consent or requesting approval, the builder associates the action with a response format through render:. Conceptually, the binding looks like render: <configured-response-format>; the exact format is defined by the implementation rather than chosen at runtime by the model.
3. The Connections layer applies the format
When the bound action runs, the Connections layer uses the configured format. The model is no longer deciding whether to emit a form, a disclosure component or a different UI. That removal of the presentation choice is the source of the deterministic guarantee.
4. The client renders and handles interaction
Agentforce Conversation Client supplies the surrounding UI container, input and message handling, token streaming and dynamic Lightning Types renderers. The configured response can target a Salesforce Lightning Web Component, a custom third-party interface such as React, or structured JSON consumed by a headless application.
Why are prompt instructions alone not reliable enough?
A prompt can tell an LLM to “always show” a disclosure, but the instruction competes with the model’s stochastic interpretation of the conversation and its generated response. A model may follow the instruction in many sessions and omit or alter the presentation in another. Prompting improves behavior; it does not turn a model-selected component into a platform-enforced requirement.
Salesforce Engineering describes the distinction directly: the LLM was not made more deterministic; the rendering decision that needed to be deterministic was removed from the LLM entirely. This is why a required form or compliance disclosure should be represented as a configured action and response format rather than as a reminder buried in conversational instructions.

How do I configure a deterministic action and response format?
The implementation is a design and configuration task rather than a prompt-writing trick. Use the following sequence to decide what must be deterministic and bind it to the right consumer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Identify a non-optional output. Select a form, disclosure, consent capture, approval gate or other result whose omission is unacceptable. Do not force deterministic rendering on every conversational reply; reserve it for a defined requirement.
- Create a distinct action. Separate the required operation from broad recommendation or exploration actions. A distinct action gives the platform an unambiguous lifecycle to observe and audit.
- Define the response format. Choose the Lightning component, custom interface or structured JSON contract that the consuming client is expected to render.
- Bind the action with
render:. Associate the action with that response format so the platform, not the model, owns the presentation choice. - Define completion and supervision behavior. If the action requires approval or can run for a long time, specify when it is considered complete. Agentforce waits for approval and execution to finish before deterministic rendering is delivered.
- Exercise multi-action paths. Test cases in which other actions run before, after or alongside the bound action. Confirm that the configured component is attached to the correct action output.
- Verify the event trail. Check that the action, response format, connection and conversation point are recorded for each session where the action runs.
Which Agentforce clients can display a deterministic response?
Deterministic rendering is not limited to a standard Salesforce-hosted screen. The response-format abstraction lets the same action contract serve different presentation layers, provided each consumer implements the agreed format.
Lightning Web Components
A Lightning Web Component can be the configured renderer for a Salesforce interface. Dynamic Lightning Types renderers and the Conversation Client provide the container and interaction plumbing around the component.
React or another custom interface
An external application can use a custom component, including a React UI, as the target format. The important control point is still the action-to-format binding: the agent does not decide at runtime which React component to invent or substitute.
Headless applications using JSON
A headless consumer can receive structured JSON instead of a visual component. Define the JSON contract first, then bind it to the action. The headless application remains responsible for turning that contract into its own screens, but it receives a predictable response shape for the configured action.

What happens when an agent runs several actions?
Agentforce does not require every action in a chain to use deterministic rendering. When multiple actions run, the platform identifies the action configured for deterministic output and attaches its response format to that action’s result. Other actions can continue under their normal behavior.

This makes sequencing a key test concern. A recommendation action might produce conversational text, followed by a consent action that must render a form. The form’s appearance is tied to the consent action, not to whichever message happens to be generated first. If the required action is supervised or long-running, its configured UI waits until approval and execution complete rather than appearing prematurely.
Practical sequencing checks
- Run the required action after an unconstrained conversational action and confirm the correct output is associated with it.
- Run two configured actions in one conversation and verify that each response format remains attached to its own action.
- Pause a supervised action for approval and confirm that rendering occurs only after the approval and execution lifecycle finishes.
- Inspect the session events to ensure the conversation point identifies the deterministic action that produced the UI.
How can I audit that a required agent UI appeared?
Agentforce records deterministic-rendering events per action and session. The event data includes the action, response format, connection and conversation point, giving an auditor a traceable record rather than requiring someone to infer compliance from a transcript.
For a single session, use those fields to answer four questions: which action ran, which format was bound to it, which connection delivered it and where in the conversation it occurred. For a deployment, aggregate the events to report how often the configured action executed and whether the expected rendering path was used.
Audit checklist
- Match the business requirement to a named action.
- Confirm that the action has a configured response format rather than only a prompt instruction.
- Verify the connection used by the client or headless consumer.
- Retain the session and conversation-point identifiers needed to reconstruct the event.
- Review supervised and long-running executions separately because their rendering time depends on completion.
- Use aggregate event reporting to produce evidence for compliance reviews.
What is the difference between prompt-only UI instructions, render:, and Agent Script?
The approaches differ in who controls presentation and how much of the surrounding workflow is constrained. The table compares the roles documented by Salesforce.
| Approach | Who chooses the renderer? | Repeatability | External or headless clients | Sequencing and state | Audit evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt-only instruction | The LLM interprets the instruction and generates the response | Flexible but stochastic | Possible, but the model still controls the presentation choice | Controlled by generated behavior | No platform-enforced deterministic-rendering event for the instruction itself |
render: plus a response format |
The platform applies the format bound to the selected action | Platform-enforced for that action’s presentation decision | Supports Lightning components, custom interfaces such as React and structured JSON | The configured output follows the action lifecycle; supervised and long-running actions render after completion | Action, format, connection and conversation-point events are recorded |
| Agent Script around a workflow | Deterministic transitions and state controls can constrain the broader workflow; the action’s renderer remains a separate configuration | More workflow control than prompting alone | Depends on the actions and response formats used in the workflow | Adds deterministic transitions and state controls around broader flows | Rendering evidence still comes from the configured action events |
When should I use deterministic rendering?
Use it when a missing or inconsistent interface creates unacceptable risk. Mandatory forms, regulated disclosures, consent capture and approval gates are the clearest cases because the business requirement is binary: the user must receive and complete the required interaction.
Keep recommendations, explanations and exploratory conversation probabilistic when there is no single required presentation. Constraining every response can make an agent less natural without improving compliance. A useful boundary is to ask whether a reviewer could accept several equivalent presentations; if yes, ordinary conversational generation may be appropriate. If no, model the output as a distinct action with a configured format.

What scale and evidence are available?
The Salesforce Developers Conversation Client guide states that the client processes more than 2.5 million actions across its interfaces; the guide does not state a publication year for that figure. Salesforce Engineering describes the deterministic-rendering guarantee in a 2025 explanation. These figures document platform claims and product behavior, not an independent benchmark against other agent-UI frameworks.

The agent never selects the required action
Deterministic rendering begins only when the configured action runs. If intent interpretation or subagent selection routes the conversation elsewhere, the bound component cannot appear. Use clear action boundaries and, where necessary, deterministic workflow controls around the decision that leads to the action.
The response format does not match the consumer
A Lightning component, React interface and JSON consumer have different contracts. Define the target format for each channel and test the actual client rather than assuming that a format designed for one interface will render correctly in another.
The UI appears later than expected
Approval and long-running execution delay rendering by design. Treat the action lifecycle as part of the user experience and communicate the waiting state in the surrounding client.

What is the practical design rule?
Let the model decide what conversation and actions are appropriate when the task is open-ended. For every output that must appear in a specific form, create a distinct action, bind it to a response format with render:, test its position in multi-action and supervised workflows, and retain the resulting event record. That division preserves flexible reasoning while making the presentation decision repeatable and auditable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can deterministic rendering make the agent’s answer itself deterministic?
No. It fixes the configured presentation decision, not the model’s interpretation, subagent choice or unconstrained text. Two sessions can still produce different explanations while rendering the same required form.
Does a headless integration have to use a visual Salesforce component?
No. A headless consumer can bind the action to a structured JSON contract and render that data in its own application. The consuming application must implement the contract consistently.
What should an auditor inspect when a disclosure is disputed?
Inspect the action and session event for the response format, connection and conversation point, then correlate it with the action’s approval or execution status. This is stronger evidence than searching the generated transcript for a phrase.
Can I use deterministic rendering for only one step in a conversational workflow?
Yes. The platform can enforce the response format for a selected action while other actions continue with normal conversational behavior. This lets teams constrain high-risk interactions without making every message a fixed component.
