Use Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP) as the identity and authorization gate in front of your staging application. For one Cloud Run service, enabling IAP directly on the service is usually the safest path because it covers the service’s default run.app hostname as well as other ingress routes. If several services or regions must share one public endpoint, put IAP on an HTTPS load balancer, then close every direct route to the backends. The essential controls are least-privilege IAM, an authorized backend identity, validated IAP headers, contextual restrictions where needed, and tests that prove an unauthenticated user cannot reach the origin.
Google describes IAP as a central authorization layer for HTTPS applications. It moves the access decision to Google Cloud instead of relying only on a network firewall, making it suitable for a staging site that should be reachable by a named team but not by the public internet.
What does Google Cloud IAP protect in a staging environment?
IAP authenticates a requester, checks whether that identity is authorized for the protected resource, and only then allows the HTTPS request to reach the application. The policy is attached to the application path rather than merely to a network segment, so the same identity decision can govern users arriving through different frontends.
For staging, that distinction matters because a private-looking URL is not an access policy. A developer who knows a load balancer’s backend hostname, a default Cloud Run hostname, or a serving port may otherwise reach the application without passing the sign-in check. IAP must therefore be combined with origin and ingress controls, not treated as a substitute for them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Authentication: the requester signs in with an identity recognized by Google Cloud.
- Authorization: IAP evaluates IAM access to the protected web resource.
- Context: optional access levels and IAM Conditions can constrain requests by device, network, host, path, date, or time.
- Application identity: the application can consume validated identity information supplied by IAP, provided it verifies the signed data correctly.
Google also characterizes IAP as a cloud-native alternative to a traditional VPN for applications accessed over HTTPS. It does not create a general-purpose private network: protocols or services that are not behind an HTTPS IAP resource need their own controls.
Should I enable IAP directly on Cloud Run or on a load balancer?
Choose direct Cloud Run IAP for a single staging service unless you need centralized routing. Use load-balancer IAP when several services, regions, or backends must share one HTTPS entry point, but explicitly block direct access to each backend.
| Decision axis | Direct Cloud Run IAP | Load-balancer IAP |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Run coverage | Protects all Cloud Run ingress paths, including the default run.app URL. |
Protects requests that traverse the load balancer; a direct run.app request can remain reachable unless you close it. |
| Setup | Enable the Cloud Run service’s IAP security setting and configure its access policy. | Requires an HTTPS frontend, a backend service, OAuth configuration, and permission for the IAP service agent to invoke Cloud Run. |
| Routing model | Best for one service with a straightforward hostname. | Useful for several services or regions behind one global HTTPS endpoint. |
| Origin exposure | Still review Cloud Run IAM and ingress settings. | Direct backend exposure must be disabled or restricted separately. |
| Performance considerations | IAP adds request latency; measure whether your staging workflows tolerate it. | IAP adds latency here as well, and the documented Cloud Run integration path is incompatible with Cloud CDN. |
Do not select the load balancer simply because it is already present. If the only requirement is “let my team sign in to one Cloud Run service,” the direct setting removes an entire class of origin-bypass mistakes. Conversely, if a load balancer is already the deliberate architectural boundary for multiple backends, central IAP can be appropriate as long as the backends cannot be reached around it.

How do I enable IAP directly on a Cloud Run staging service?
Direct Cloud Run IAP is the shortest secure path for a single service. Complete the access policy and then test both the normal hostname and every alternate hostname your deployment exposes.
- Identify the exact staging service and project. Record the Cloud Run service name, region, project, custom hostname, and default
run.apphostname. Include these values in the release checklist so a later deployment does not accidentally point testers at another service. - Open the service security settings. In Google Cloud Console, open Cloud Run, select the staging service, and use its security or authentication settings to enable IAP. The available label can vary with console revisions; choose the setting that enables Identity-Aware Proxy for that Cloud Run service, not merely unauthenticated invocation.
- Assign access to a staging group. Grant only the required team group the IAP-secured Web App User role for the protected resource. A group is easier to review and remove than a long list of individual users. Keep membership limited to people who need staging access.
- Review Cloud Run invocation policy. Check who has the Cloud Run Invoker permission and whether any broad project- or service-level grant allows calls that bypass the intended IAP boundary. The direct IAP configuration should be the route users take; do not leave an accidental public invoker grant in place.
- Test both outcomes. In a private browser window, request the staging hostname while signed out and confirm a sign-in redirect. Then use an account that lacks the IAP role and confirm denial. Finally, test the default
run.apphostname separately; direct Cloud Run IAP should protect it too.
Direct Cloud Run IAP is still an IAM configuration, not a promise that every application-level endpoint is safe. Keep administrative paths, test data, and destructive operations subject to the same application authorization rules you would use behind any other frontend.
How do I put IAP on an HTTPS load balancer in front of staging?
Load-balancer IAP has four moving parts: an HTTPS frontend, a backend service, OAuth client credentials, and permissions for the IAP service agent. Missing any one of them can produce a sign-in loop, a denied backend request, or an apparently protected site whose origin is still public.
- Provide an HTTPS frontend. IAP on a load balancer is configured on an HTTPS backend service. Terminate TLS at the load balancer with the certificate and hostname that staging users will actually use.
- Attach the staging backend. Add the Cloud Run service, Compute Engine instance group, or GKE backend to the backend service that serves the staging hostname. Keep the backend definition specific to staging so a later production change cannot silently broaden the policy.
- Enable IAP on that backend service. In the load balancer configuration, enable IAP for the selected backend service and complete the OAuth setup. Enabling IAP creates OAuth 2.0 client credentials. Do not delete the generated credentials: IAP stops functioning when the credentials it relies on are removed.
- Authorize the IAP service agent to call Cloud Run. For Cloud Run routing, grant the Cloud Run Invoker role to
service-[PROJECT-NUMBER]@gcp-sa-iap.iam.gserviceaccount.com. Replace[PROJECT-NUMBER]with the numeric project number, not the human-readable project ID. - Grant user access to IAP. Give the IAP-secured Web App User role only to the staging group or other narrowly defined principals. Google Cloud supports Google Accounts, groups, service accounts, and Workspace domains as principals; choose the smallest set that matches the workflow.
- Close the backend’s alternate route. Disable the Cloud Run default URL or use Cloud Run ingress controls so requests can arrive only through the intended load balancer path. For Compute Engine and GKE, firewall the serving port so users cannot connect directly to the workload.
- Exercise the complete path. Test the public staging hostname, the default backend hostname, any regional hostname, and any health or preview hostname. A successful sign-in through the load balancer proves only that one route is protected.
The service-agent grant and the user-facing IAP grant solve different problems. The service agent lets Google’s proxy invoke the backend; the Web App User role lets a person or approved principal pass the proxy’s authorization check. Neither grant should be replaced with a broad “all users” permission.
How do I stop users bypassing IAP through the Cloud Run URL?
A load-balancer IAP policy does not automatically protect a Cloud Run service’s default run.app URL. Prevent bypass by removing or restricting that direct route, then verify it with an unauthenticated request.

Cloud Run behind a load balancer
- Disable the default
run.appURL when the service does not need it for operations. - If the URL must remain available, configure Cloud Run ingress so traffic is accepted only from the intended load balancer path.
- Review Cloud Run IAM for broad invoker grants. A public or project-wide invoker permission can defeat the distinction between the protected frontend and the origin.
- Test the hostname independently from the load-balancer hostname after every routing or deployment change.
Compute Engine and GKE behind a load balancer
For virtual machines and GKE services, the equivalent bypass is a direct connection to the serving port. Firewall that port so only the load balancer or required internal components can reach it. Google’s guidance warns that allowing users to reach the serving port directly lets them circumvent IAP.
Other alternate paths
Inventory DNS records, temporary preview URLs, regional addresses, health-check endpoints, and administrative listeners. A forgotten record is still an entry point even if the primary hostname redirects to Google sign-in. Treat origin discovery as part of the staging release process rather than a one-time setup task.
How should I grant the least privilege needed for staging access?
Bind the IAP-secured Web App User role to a narrowly scoped group or principal, and keep backend invocation separate. Avoid broad domain-wide or project-wide grants unless they are an explicit, reviewed requirement.
Recommended Free Tools
| Principal or permission | Purpose | Recommended scope |
|---|---|---|
| Staging Google group | Allows named testers and developers through IAP. | Only the staging IAP resource; maintain membership centrally. |
| Individual Google Account | Useful for a temporary exception or a small team. | Use sparingly and remove when the assignment ends. |
| Service account | Supports an approved automated caller or integration. | Grant only the required IAP and backend permissions; do not make it public. |
| Workspace domain | Convenient for an organization-wide policy. | Use only when every account in that domain should access this staging resource. |
| IAP service agent | Lets the proxy invoke a Cloud Run backend. | Grant Cloud Run Invoker on the target service, not unrelated services. |
Review inherited IAM at the project and folder levels. A correctly scoped resource binding can still be undermined by a broader inherited permission. Include group membership, service-account permissions, OAuth credentials, and direct-origin exposure in every staging release review.
How can the application trust the identity that IAP supplies?
The application should consume identity information only after validating IAP’s signed headers or the platform-specific identity API. Never authorize a user from an arbitrary client-supplied header.
- Use Google’s signed-header procedure. Configure the application to verify the signature and the expected key material before accepting the identity or email value.
- Check the request context. Confirm that the request arrived through the protected IAP path and that the expected audience, host, and application configuration match the staging service.
- Map identity to application roles. IAP answers whether a principal may reach the application. Your application should still decide whether that principal may view test data, run an administrative action, or change configuration.
- Use the platform API where applicable. Google documents the App Engine Users API for supported App Engine scenarios. Follow that platform’s validation method instead of copying a Cloud Run or load-balancer header parser.
- Test spoofing resistance. Send a request containing a forged identity header directly to an origin test endpoint. It must be rejected or ignored rather than treated as an authenticated user.
Signed identity data is an input to authorization, not a replacement for application authorization. Keep secrets, destructive test controls, and privileged administration behind an additional role check even when every request has passed IAP.
How do Access Context Manager and IAM Conditions restrict staging further?
Use Access Context Manager access levels when access should depend on attributes such as source IP or device state. Add IAM Conditions when the permission itself should be limited to an exact host, path, date, or time window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAccess levels for network and device context
Create an access level that represents an approved corporate network, managed device posture, or another supported attribute, then require that level in the IAP policy. This prevents a valid account from automatically becoming a valid staging session when it is connecting from an unapproved context.

IAM Conditions for path and schedule
A condition can narrow access to a particular host or path, or make a grant temporary. For example, an administrative group could be limited to /admin during working hours while the rest of the staging site remains available to the normal tester group. Use the exact host and path values expected by the request.
Context-aware comparisons are exact. Test URL encoding, trailing slashes, case, and alternate hostnames because a condition that matches one spelling may not match another. A condition that is too broad can expose more than intended; one that is too narrow can create confusing denials for legitimate testers.
How do I verify that staging is actually protected?
Run the checks below from separate browser sessions and, where possible, from a network or device that should fail the access-level test. Record the result with the release rather than relying on a single successful sign-in.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Unauthenticated browser: confirm that a signed-out request is redirected to Google sign-in and cannot receive application content first.
- Unauthorized account: sign in with an account that lacks the IAP-secured Web App User role and confirm an access denial.
- Authorized account: confirm that a member of the staging group reaches the expected application and that the application records the validated identity.
- Direct Cloud Run hostname: when IAP is on a load balancer, request the
run.apphostname separately and confirm it is disabled or restricted. - Backend origin: for Compute Engine or GKE, verify that a direct connection to the serving port is blocked by firewall policy.
- Service-agent invocation: confirm that the IAP service agent can invoke only the intended Cloud Run service.
- Header spoofing: send forged identity headers and verify that the application does not treat them as proof of login.
- Context failure: test a disallowed IP or device and confirm that the access level denies the request.
- Condition boundaries: test exact paths, encoded paths, trailing slashes, and host variants against every IAM Condition.
- Audit trail: locate authorized and unauthorized requests in Cloud Audit Logs and verify that the evaluated access levels are visible.
Perform the direct-origin test after infrastructure changes, not just after the initial IAP rollout. A new service revision, backend attachment, DNS record, or ingress setting can create a route that was absent during the original validation.
What should I monitor after enabling IAP?
Use Cloud Audit Logs to review IAP data-access entries for both successful and denied requests. The logs can show which access levels a requester satisfied, helping you distinguish a missing role from a failed device or network condition.
- Review denied requests for unexpected users, hostnames, paths, and source contexts.
- Compare authorized identities with the current staging group membership.
- Alert on changes to the IAP policy, OAuth credentials, Cloud Run ingress, and backend IAM.
- Inspect service-account permissions for grants that have become broader than the release requires.
- Remove temporary testers and expired access-level or condition exceptions.
Keep an ownership record for the OAuth credentials generated when IAP was enabled. Deleting those credentials breaks IAP, so credential lifecycle work must include a deliberate replacement plan rather than an uncoordinated cleanup.
What are IAP’s performance and architecture trade-offs?
IAP introduces an additional authorization hop, so it increases latency. Google’s documentation states the qualitative effect but does not establish one universal latency number for all applications; measure your own staging workflow, especially interactive development tools, WebSocket-like behavior, and large asset requests.
The load-balancer path for Cloud Run has another documented limitation: it is incompatible with Cloud CDN. If staging needs CDN behavior for a specific test, account for that architectural constraint before choosing centralized load-balancer IAP. Do not infer production performance from a staging result that uses a different path.

Centralized IAP can still be worth the overhead when one policy must cover multiple services or regions. Direct Cloud Run IAP usually has less configuration surface for a single service, reducing the chance that a forgotten origin or backend permission defeats the policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I troubleshoot common staging IAP failures?
The sign-in page loops or returns an OAuth error
Check that the frontend is HTTPS, the configured hostname matches the OAuth setup, and the generated OAuth client credentials still exist. If credentials were deleted, IAP cannot operate until the configuration is restored through the supported Google Cloud workflow.
The load balancer returns a backend permission error
Verify the project number in the IAP service-agent address and grant that service agent the Cloud Run Invoker role on the exact service. Confirm that the backend is the service you intended and that a condition or organization policy is not denying the invocation.
Users can open the default Cloud Run URL without signing in
This indicates an origin-bypass path, not a failed load-balancer login. Disable the default URL or restrict Cloud Run ingress, then retest the hostname outside the load balancer and inspect broad invoker grants.
A user with the right group is denied
Check group membership propagation, the resource on which the IAP-secured Web App User role was granted, and any Access Context Manager level or IAM Condition. Test the exact host and path, including URL encoding and trailing slash behavior.
The application shows the wrong user
Confirm that the application validates IAP’s signed identity data and is not reading an unverified header from the client. Check proxy configuration so a downstream component cannot overwrite the trusted identity input.
Direct VM or GKE access still works
Inspect firewall rules and network routes to the serving port. The load balancer can be protected while the origin remains reachable unless the firewall allows only the intended proxy and internal health-check traffic.

Frequently asked questions
Can IAP replace a VPN for every staging use case?
No. IAP is a cloud-native alternative to a traditional VPN for HTTPS applications, not a general tunnel for arbitrary protocols or private network administration. Non-HTTPS services still need their own network controls and authentication.
How much latency does IAP add?
Google documents that IAP increases latency but does not publish one figure that applies to every Cloud Run, VM, or GKE deployment. Measure from the client locations and device types your staging team actually uses, and compare the direct and load-balancer designs before standardizing one.
Can a service account be an IAP principal?
Yes. Google Cloud lists service accounts among the supported principal types. Use one only for a defined automation path, grant the narrowest resource permissions possible, and keep its credentials out of browser-based workflows.
