The F-35B Lightning II can land vertically because it has a dedicated lift system: a fan behind the cockpit, a swiveling rear exhaust nozzle, and ducts under the wings that help control balance. Together, they direct thrust downward so the aircraft can hover and descend. For takeoff, it can rise straight up only with a light load; a short takeoff lets it use airflow over its wings to carry more.
What “VTOL” means for a fighter jet
VTOL means vertical takeoff and landing. It is often used loosely, but the precise description for the F-35B is STOVL: short takeoff and vertical landing. It can take off after a short forward run and land vertically. A straight-up takeoff is possible in limited, light-load conditions, rather than being the normal answer for every mission.
This capability is specific to the F-35B. The F-35A is designed for conventional runway operations, while the F-35C is designed for catapult launch and arrested recovery on large aircraft carriers. The Royal Air Force’s F-35B profile describes the B variant’s STOVL role and its use from carriers and austere operating locations.
How the F-35B creates vertical lift
An ordinary fighter cannot simply hover by pointing its nose up. The F-35B changes how its propulsion system directs thrust. In conventional flight, it flies on its wings; in STOVL mode, dedicated hardware sends thrust downward and helps control the aircraft while it is slow.

- Lift fan: A shaft from the engine drives a counter-rotating fan behind the cockpit. In STOVL mode, a clutch connects the fan to the engine drive shaft and doors open to route air through the system.
- Swiveling rear nozzle: The engine’s rear three-bearing swivel nozzle turns its exhaust downward, adding vertical thrust.
- Under-wing roll ducts: Ducts release air downward under the wings to help maintain lateral balance.
The fan does not provide all the lift by itself: the redirected rear-engine exhaust also contributes. Lockheed Martin’s 2007 system description identifies the shaft-driven fan, roll ducts, and rear swivel nozzle as parts of the STOVL propulsion system. Its 2010 account of in-flight STOVL operations also describes the system and its test context.
How it takes off: vertical launch or short takeoff
The choice is not simply “runway” or “no runway.” The takeoff method affects how much load the aircraft can carry. Lockheed Martin says the F-35B can take off vertically with a light load; the available official sources do not establish one universal payload limit or takeoff distance.

| Method | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical takeoff | The aircraft directs thrust downward and rises without a forward ground run. | Requires a light load, according to Lockheed Martin’s 2007 description. |
| Short takeoff | The aircraft accelerates along a short strip or ship deck while its propulsion system is configured for STOVL. As it moves, airflow over the wings supplies some lift. | More load flexibility than a straight-up launch because the wings help support the aircraft. |
A short takeoff is still a takeoff from a suitable surface, with enough space and safe operating conditions. It does not mean the aircraft can launch from any patch of ground or operate without planning for its load and surroundings.
How it lands vertically
A vertical landing reverses the transition from wing-borne flight to powered lift. The aircraft slows, configures its lift system, moves into a controlled hover above the landing point, and descends while its downward-directed thrust supports and controls it. It is a managed flight maneuver, not a drop.

Test reports illustrate the sequence but should not be mistaken for operating instructions. In a 2010 demonstration, Lockheed Martin reported a hover at about 150 feet before descent; that was a detail of that test, not a standard landing altitude. Its report also described a landing on a 95-foot-square pad, which likewise does not establish a universal minimum landing area. A Marine Corps caption for a separate 2010 test described slowing from 200 knots through 60 knots to a zero-airspeed hover before carrying out hover-control test points and a STOVL landing.
How an F-35B lands on a carrier
On a ship, the landing spot is a moving, confined deck rather than an open runway. During the 2017 HMS Queen Elizabeth trials, the vertical landing procedure described by the U.S. Navy involved hovering beside the carrier, translating sideways over the deck, and descending to land.

The UK also tested a different recovery method called shipborne rolling vertical landing (SRVL). The aircraft approaches from aft while moving forward, combining vectored engine thrust with lift from air flowing over its wings, then touches down and stops on the deck. The Navy described heavier recovery loads as the reason for the UK’s planned use of SRVL; this should not be treated as a method used by every F-35B operator. The Navy’s 2018 report covers the trial methods and reports a tally of 98 short takeoffs from the ski jump, 96 vertical landings, and two SRVLs during the initial UK carrier flight-trial phase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why “without a runway” does not mean “without a landing site”
STOVL removes the need for a conventional long runway for certain operations, but the aircraft still needs a suitable surface or deck, room to maneuver, and safe conditions. Neither a universal payload-versus-range chart nor a generally applicable takeoff distance follows from the official accounts cited here; those depend on configuration, conditions, and operating rules. The capability is a specialized propulsion-and-control system, not a guarantee that every location is usable.
