Scientists measure Arctic cloud-forming aerosols by combining particle counts and size measurements with direct tests of how particles activate into water droplets or initiate ice. Aircraft reveal vertical structure, ships sample remote ocean and sea-ice air, and ground observatories track seasonal changes. No single instrument can establish both what particles are present and what they do in clouds, so researchers compare activation measurements, cloud-particle residuals, particle chemistry and meteorology.
What are scientists trying to measure?
Arctic aerosol observations answer two related but distinct questions: how many airborne particles are present, and how many can participate in cloud formation under particular conditions. A particle’s size and composition help explain its behavior, but neither alone proves that it became a cloud droplet or initiated ice.
Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) are particles that can grow into water droplets when exposed to sufficient water-vapour supersaturation. Ice-nucleating particles (INP) are particles that initiate freezing under conditions that would otherwise leave water liquid. Because droplet activation and ice formation involve different processes, scientists use separate tests and report CCN and INP concentrations rather than treating total aerosol number as a substitute.

The distinction matters in the Arctic, where aerosol sources and cloud conditions change with season and location. An observed particle may have arrived from elsewhere, come from the ocean or marine biological activity, or been altered inside a cloud. Measurements therefore need to capture both the aerosol and the atmospheric context around it.

How do researchers count particles and measure their size?
Condensation particle counters (CPCs) make very small particles detectable by growing them into droplets and counting those droplets optically. Optical particle counters and ultra-high-sensitivity aerosol spectrometers extend observations to larger particles. In the ACLOUD campaign, a CPC detected particles down to about 10 nm, while an optical counter measured particles above 250 nm.
Size distributions matter because larger particles, and particles that take up water more readily, generally activate into droplets more easily. But a size measurement is still a proxy: two particles of similar size may behave differently if their composition or hygroscopicity differs. For that reason, campaign plans such as ARCSIX combine particle number and dry-size distributions with measurements of hygroscopicity, volatility and optical properties.
At the Zeppelin observatory, the number concentration of particles with dry diameters greater than 70 nm, written N70, is used as a practical proxy for CCN in warm clouds. A proxy is useful for interpreting long records, but it is not the same as exposing a sample to a known supersaturation and directly counting activated droplets.

A CCN counter sends an aerosol sample through a controlled water-vapour supersaturation and counts the particles that grow into droplets. By measuring at different supersaturations, researchers can report a CCN concentration spectrum, which shows how activation changes with the humidity conditions imposed by the instrument.
This direct activation test answers a more specific question than total particle number: how many sampled particles activate under the test conditions? It does not by itself identify where those particles came from, show what happened to them inside a natural cloud, or recreate every condition in an Arctic cloud. Scientists therefore interpret the result alongside particle size, composition, cloud microphysics and meteorology.

Cloud observations can also help infer activation. At Zeppelin, a long-term record found average activation diameters of 58–78 nm when updraft speeds were below 1 m s−1, as reported by Karlsson and colleagues in 2021. Updraft speed is relevant because rising air influences the supersaturation available to activate particles. The diameter range is thus an observation under the stated updraft conditions, not a universal size threshold for every Arctic cloud.
How are ice-nucleating particles measured?
INP instruments impose freezing conditions on sampled droplets or otherwise test whether particles initiate freezing, then count the particles associated with ice formation. ARCSIX specifies both online and offline INP concentration measurements, alongside CCN spectra and other aerosol observations.
INP observations can vary with season and source. During MOSAiC’s annual observation period, September 2019 through October 2020, winter and spring INP concentrations were lower and associated with transport from lower latitudes. Summer concentrations were enhanced and were considered likely to be linked to marine biological production. These are source interpretations, not proof that every measured INP came from a particular source.
CCN and INP instruments both test particle activity, but they do not measure the same property: one counts particles that activate into liquid droplets at imposed supersaturation, while the other assesses particles that initiate freezing. A total aerosol count cannot replace either test.
What can cloud-particle residuals reveal?
A counterflow virtual impactor (CVI) separates cloud droplets and ice crystals from unactivated aerosol using their inertia. The sampled cloud particles are dried, leaving residual nuclei that can be counted or analyzed with CPCs, mobility analyzers and composition instruments. Zeppelin’s ground-based version is called a GCVI.

Residual sampling brings researchers closer to the particles that were actually incorporated into cloud droplets or ice crystals than an ambient aerosol sample does. It can help connect particle size or composition to cloud participation. It is not, however, a simple label identifying a particle’s original role: residuals may represent CCN or INP, and particles can also be modified by in-cloud processes such as scavenging or secondary ice formation.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThat qualification is important when interpreting cloud-residual results. As Karlsson and colleagues noted in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics in 2021, “An important caveat is that all of the aforementioned studies measure CCN and INP concentrations by artificially activating aerosol particles.” Instrument activation is a controlled way to compare samples, but the resulting concentration is not a complete account of every process in a natural cloud.
How do ships, aircraft and observatories complement one another?
Arctic researchers combine platforms because each samples a different part of a changing atmosphere. Aircraft provide vertical profiles, ships reach remote ocean and sea-ice air, and mountain observatories can collect continuous seasonal records. The trade-off is between spatial reach, duration and the influence of the immediate sampling environment.
| Platform or method | What it contributes | Coverage and interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Aircraft | Vertical profiles of aerosol and cloud-related properties | Can sample vertical structure away from a fixed site, but observations are episodic. |
| Research ship | Measurements in remote ocean and sea-ice air | MOSAiC operated a year-round aerosol suite aboard RV Polarstern, including particle number, size, CCN, fluorescent particles and chemical components. |
| Mountain observatory | Continuous measurements and cloud-particle residual sampling, including at Zeppelin | Can build records over seasons to years, but terrain and inlet effects may influence observations. |
| Direct CCN test | Counts particles that activate at controlled supersaturation | Measures activation under instrument conditions; a spectrum compares concentrations across supersaturations. |
| INP test | Counts particles that initiate freezing under imposed conditions | Measures ice-nucleating activity rather than total particle abundance. |
| CVI or GCVI residual sampling | Collects dried nuclei from cloud droplets and ice crystals | Measures particles that entered cloud particles, but in-cloud processing can alter residuals. |
The MOSAiC shipboard program illustrates the value of a broad suite: its year-round measurements combined particle number and size with CCN, fluorescent-particle and chemical-component observations. ARCSIX similarly plans a wide set of measurements, including black carbon, bulk chemistry and single-particle composition. Such combinations let scientists distinguish a change in total aerosol abundance from a change in the mix of particles or their cloud-forming behavior.
How do chemistry and source measurements help explain cloud formation?
Mass spectrometry and other chemical instruments identify components such as sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, chloride, organics and black carbon. Fluorescent-particle and single-particle measurements can add information about biological material and mixing state—the combination of components within individual particles. These data help interpret why particles with similar sizes may have different activation behavior.

Source attribution also requires more than a chemical fingerprint or size mode alone. In the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition, Aitken-mode particles—approximately 70 nm in diameter or smaller—contributed substantially to CCN or cloud-droplet residuals after freeze-up. Larger accumulation-mode particles were more associated with oceanic air. The findings show why researchers examine size and cloud relevance together; they do not establish that every particle in either mode had a single source.
Researchers combine aerosol measurements with meteorology, cloud microphysics and air-mass back trajectories before attributing particles to a source or connecting them to a climate effect. A back trajectory helps assess where an air mass traveled, while cloud and weather observations provide context for interpreting activation. No one measurement establishes the full chain from source to cloud response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can bias Arctic aerosol measurements?
Several limitations are especially relevant when sampling remote, cold environments. Inlet transmission losses can prevent some particles from reaching instruments. Ice or snow may shatter and create fragments that complicate particle counts. At ground sites, local terrain and inlet artifacts can influence what a GCVI or aerosol inlet samples.
Cloud-residual data have additional interpretive limits: in-cloud scavenging and secondary ice processes can modify what is collected. Researchers reduce the risk of overinterpreting a single instrument by combining redundant measurements with meteorology, cloud microphysics and air-mass back trajectories. This approach supports a more defensible interpretation, but it does not make every source attribution certain.
Coverage is another limitation. Arctic observations remain sparse outside major campaigns, so a detailed year-long ship record or a long-running observatory series should not automatically be treated as representative of every Arctic region and season. Aircraft provide valuable vertical detail but do not offer continuous monitoring.

What do the Zeppelin seasonal measurements show?
Koike and colleagues reported median cloud-particle numbers at Mount Zeppelin of 65 ± 8 cm−3 in May–July and 8 ± 7 cm−3 from October–March in 2019. The contrast documents a seasonal difference at that observatory; it is not an Arctic-wide estimate. At Zeppelin, N70 offers a practical warm-cloud CCN proxy, while the separate activation-diameter observations describe cloud activation under specified low-updraft conditions.
These measures answer different questions. Cloud-particle number describes particles observed in clouds, N70 summarizes a size-selected ambient aerosol population used as a proxy, and an activation test measures response to imposed supersaturation. Keeping those quantities distinct prevents an observed seasonal contrast from being mistaken for a direct measurement of a single aerosol source or mechanism.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CCN stand for?
CCN means cloud condensation nuclei: aerosol particles that can grow into liquid cloud droplets when water-vapour supersaturation is high enough. It describes a particle’s droplet-forming ability under relevant conditions, not simply its presence in the air.

What does INP stand for?
INP means ice-nucleating particle. It is a particle capable of initiating freezing under conditions in which water might otherwise remain liquid.
Can Arctic aerosol measurements be compared directly between campaigns?
Only with care. Instruments, sampling platforms, seasons and imposed activation conditions differ, and Arctic observations are sparse outside major campaigns; comparisons need to account for those differences rather than treating every concentration as equivalent.
Why do scientists report CCN spectra instead of one CCN number?
The concentration of particles that activate depends on the supersaturation imposed in the counter. A spectrum preserves that dependence, while a single value would describe only one selected test condition.
