Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) help form liquid cloud droplets; ice-nucleating particles (INP) initiate ice crystals in cold clouds. CCN are counted by whether an aerosol particle activates at a specified water-vapor supersaturation. INP are counted by whether a particle triggers ice formation at a stated temperature and cloud condition, usually by heterogeneous nucleation on its surface. The categories overlap—some particles act as both—but most CCN are not efficient INP. That distinction matters because CCN mainly control droplet populations and liquid-cloud growth, while INP can start mixed-phase glaciation and redirect clouds toward snow, graupel or rain.

What is the basic difference between CCN and INP?

CCN and INP are functional labels, not two perfectly separate chemical families. A particle is called a CCN when water vapor condenses on it to make a liquid droplet under a specified supersaturation. A particle is called an INP when it catalyzes the formation of ice under specified cold-cloud conditions. The same aerosol can satisfy both definitions, but the number of particles that are ice-active is normally far smaller than the number that can activate liquid droplets.

NOAA describes smoke, ocean spray and wind-blown soil as examples of particles on which cloud water can condense. The World Meteorological Organization defines CCN number as aerosol particles that can activate to cloud droplets at a given water supersaturation. In contrast, INP are the particles that provide a surface or other pathway for ice to form before purely homogeneous freezing would occur.

How does a particle become a cloud condensation nucleus?

A CCN forms when an aerosol particle takes up enough water to grow into a cloud droplet. Activation depends chiefly on the particle’s size, composition and hygroscopicity, together with the water-vapor supersaturation reached by a rising air parcel.

1. Rising air creates supersaturation

As air rises, it expands and cools. NOAA’s idealized dry-adiabatic explanation uses a cooling rate of about 9.8 °C per kilometre before the parcel reaches saturation. Once the air is saturated, continued lifting can produce a small excess of water vapor over the equilibrium value: water-vapor supersaturation. That excess supplies the driving force for condensation.

2. Hygroscopic particles take up water

Particles that readily attract water, such as many sea-salt-containing aerosols, need less supersaturation to grow. Less-hygroscopic or hydrophobic particles resist water uptake and may require a higher supersaturation, a larger size, or both. NASA contrasts hygroscopic particles that provide effective condensation surfaces with hydrophobic particles that resist condensation.

3. Activation is a threshold, not a permanent identity

The same aerosol population can yield different CCN counts at different supersaturations. A measurement at 0.1% supersaturation will not necessarily count the same particles as one at 0.5%. For that reason, a statement such as “this air mass contains a million CCN per cubic metre” is incomplete unless it also gives the supersaturation, sampling conditions and counting method.

Cloud-condensation nuclei versus general condensation nuclei

IUPAC terminology distinguishes CCN from the broader class of condensation nuclei by the humidity used to count them. In the cited convention, CCN are counted at relative humidity less than or equal to 102%, while general condensation nuclei are counted around 300% relative humidity. These thresholds provide terminology context; instruments and studies do not always use identical operating definitions, so results should be compared only when their protocols match.

How does an ice-nucleating particle trigger freezing?

INP act in cold clouds where liquid water can remain below 0 °C. Their surfaces lower the barrier to forming an organized ice embryo, allowing freezing at temperatures warmer than the point at which a pure water droplet would freeze spontaneously.

Heterogeneous ice nucleation

Most atmospheric ice formation at relatively warm subzero temperatures is heterogeneous: an ice embryo develops on an aerosol surface. Mineral dust, biological material, soot and internally mixed particles can all show ice activity, but their efficiencies differ widely. Surface structure, defects, coatings and contact with water can matter as much as the particle’s broad chemical label.

Homogeneous freezing near −40 °C

If suitable ice nuclei are absent, supercooled droplets can persist to much lower temperatures. NASA identifies approximately −40 °C as the temperature toward which freezing is delayed without ice nuclei; the cloud-microphysics literature places homogeneous ice nucleation near the same temperature. Near that limit, water can freeze without a special aerosol surface, so the relative importance of INP changes sharply with temperature.

Ice activity is strongly conditional

An aerosol is not simply “an INP” in every cloud. Ice activity depends on temperature, ice supersaturation, the amount of liquid water, surface area and the measurement protocol. A dust particle that nucleates ice at one temperature may remain inactive at a warmer temperature or after its surface has been coated by pollution. INP concentration should therefore always be reported with the temperature and other test conditions.

What is the difference between CCN and INP in practice?

Comparison Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) Ice-nucleating particles (INP)
Cloud phase initiated Liquid cloud droplet Ice crystal or an ice embryo
Main activation condition Water-vapor supersaturation; particle size and hygroscopicity matter Cold-cloud temperature, ice supersaturation and active surface properties
Typical atmospheric abundance Common aerosol subset Much rarer active subset under a given condition
Primary microphysical effects Droplet number, condensational growth and liquid-cloud optical properties Glaciation, vapor deposition, riming, aggregation, snow or graupel formation and other ice-mediated precipitation paths
Relationship to the other category Some particles are also INP Some particles are also CCN

The IPCC summarizes the overlap directly: aerosols can serve as both CCN and ice nuclei on which cloud droplets and ice crystals form. The practical difference is therefore the process being tested—liquid activation versus ice initiation—not a universal chemical boundary.

Are ice-nucleating particles a type of cloud condensation nuclei?

Sometimes, but not by definition. A particle can be a CCN at one supersaturation and an INP at one or more cold-cloud temperatures, yet many efficient CCN never nucleate ice in the atmosphere. Conversely, a particle with an ice-active surface may be too small, too insoluble or otherwise unsuitable to activate as a liquid droplet at the supersaturation being considered.

Why overlap occurs

  • Mineral dust: Dust commonly provides surfaces that can nucleate ice and can also take up water, especially after chemical aging.
  • Sea-salt-containing aerosol: Sea salt is strongly hygroscopic and therefore often effective as CCN; its ice activity depends on temperature, phase and surface modification.
  • Biological material: Some biological particles have ice-active surface structures, while their water uptake varies by material and condition.
  • Soot and internally mixed particles: Coatings and mixing can change both water uptake and ice activity, so the same source type can behave differently after transport.

These examples illustrate possibilities, not guarantees. A material name alone does not tell you the fraction of particles that activate as CCN or the fraction that nucleate ice.

Why can supercooled cloud droplets remain liquid below freezing?

Freezing requires an ice embryo with the right molecular arrangement. In a clean, small droplet, forming that embryo is statistically unlikely at temperatures only slightly below 0 °C. A suitable INP surface makes the process easier; without one, the droplet can remain liquid while being supercooled.

This explains why cold clouds can contain liquid water and why the presence of subzero temperature alone does not prove that ice will form. As temperature falls, the probability of spontaneous homogeneous freezing rises. Near approximately −40 °C, homogeneous nucleation becomes important even when INP are absent, which limits how long supercooled droplets can persist.

Supercooled liquid is also why a small number of effective INP can have an outsized influence. Ice does not need to fill a cloud immediately. Once a few crystals appear, they can grow by taking up vapor from neighboring liquid droplets, collide with droplets, collect them by riming, aggregate with other crystals and eventually melt into rain below the freezing level.

How do CCN affect clouds, rain and climate-relevant properties?

CCN determine how many droplets share the water available in a rising parcel. If more particles activate while the available liquid water is similar, that water is divided among more droplets, so the average droplet can initially be smaller. Droplet number and size affect condensational growth, cloud reflectivity and the time needed for collision-coalescence.

Liquid-cloud growth

Small droplets grow efficiently by condensation while the parcel remains supersaturated. As growth proceeds, the supersaturation is consumed. The resulting droplet spectrum—not simply the total aerosol count—controls how quickly droplets become large enough for collisions to matter.

Warm-cloud precipitation

Ice is not required for every rain event. NASA notes that warm clouds can begin precipitation through droplet collision and coalescence while remaining above freezing. In such clouds, CCN-driven changes in droplet number and size can alter how quickly rain develops.

Optical and lifetime effects

A cloud with more numerous, smaller droplets can scatter more sunlight and may persist differently than a cloud with fewer, larger droplets. The direction and size of the effect depend on dynamics, entrainment, precipitation loss and aerosol composition; CCN counts alone do not determine a cloud’s lifetime or climate response.

How do INP affect mixed-phase clouds, snow and hail?

INP matter most when a cloud contains both supercooled liquid and ice. Once ice crystals form, water vapor tends to deposit onto ice because of the difference in equilibrium vapor pressure between ice and liquid water. Liquid droplets can evaporate while crystals grow, a process that can accelerate glaciation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ice-mediated growth pathways

  • Vapor deposition: Ice crystals grow directly from water vapor.
  • Riming: Crystals or graupel collect supercooled droplets in collisions.
  • Aggregation: Ice particles collide and stick, producing larger snowflakes.
  • Melting: Snow or ice particles can melt as they fall through warmer air, reaching the surface as rain.
  • Secondary ice processes: Interactions among ice, droplets and turbulence can create additional small ice particles after the first nucleation event.

Whether these pathways produce snow, graupel or rain depends on temperature profiles, liquid-water content, updrafts and the depth of the cloud below freezing. INP initiate an important branch of the process, but they do not by themselves determine the final precipitation type.

How are CCN and INP measured?

Measurements must state the environmental conditions because neither label is absolute. A CCN measurement reports the number of particles that activate at a chosen water supersaturation. An INP measurement reports the number or fraction that nucleate ice at a chosen temperature and, where relevant, ice supersaturation or immersion/contact condition.

Questions to ask about a CCN result

  • What water-vapor supersaturation was imposed?
  • What particle-size range entered the instrument?
  • Were particles dried, humidified or chemically altered before counting?
  • Is the result a concentration, a fraction of total aerosol, or an activation spectrum across several supersaturations?

Questions to ask about an INP result

  • At what temperature was ice formation scored?
  • Was the test based on immersion, deposition, contact or another nucleation mode?
  • How long were droplets or particles held before freezing was recorded?
  • Were particles heated, washed or exposed to coatings that could change surface activity?

Different protocols can produce different counts even for similar air samples. Comparing a CCN concentration with an INP concentration is meaningful only when the supersaturation, temperature, sample treatment and counting basis are clear.

What are the most common misconceptions?

“Every aerosol particle is a CCN.”

No. Aerosols vary in size and water affinity, and only those that activate at the specified supersaturation are counted as CCN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Every particle called an INP freezes a droplet.”

No. INP activity is probabilistic and condition-dependent. A particle may be ice-active only within a particular temperature range or after a particular interaction with water.

“More CCN always means more rain.”

No. More activated droplets can divide water among smaller droplets and delay collision-coalescence, although cloud dynamics and mixed-phase processes can change the outcome.

“Ice must be present for rain to form.”

No. Warm clouds can produce rain through liquid-droplet collision and coalescence without an ice phase.

“CCN and INP are fixed species categories.”

No. They describe what particles do under specified thermodynamic and measurement conditions. Mixing, aging and surface changes can move a particle into or out of either functional category.

How should you interpret a CCN or INP claim?

Use this checklist when reading a paper, forecast product or laboratory result:

  1. Identify the phase: Does the claim concern liquid droplets or ice crystals?
  2. Find the activation condition: Look for water supersaturation for CCN, or temperature and ice-related conditions for INP.
  3. Check the abundance basis: Is the value per unit volume, a percentage of aerosol, or a fraction active under the test?
  4. Check the material and aging: Dust, sea spray, biological particles, soot and mixed aerosols can behave differently after transport.
  5. Separate initiation from outcome: CCN or INP start a microphysical pathway; dynamics determine whether the cloud grows, glaciates, precipitates or dissipates.

The shortest reliable summary is: CCN control which aerosols can become liquid droplets at a chosen supersaturation, while INP control which particles can start ice at a chosen cold-cloud condition. They overlap, but their abundance, activation physics and effects on precipitation are not interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one aerosol particle be counted as both a CCN and an INP?

Yes. The particle must meet the liquid-droplet activation criterion in one test and the ice-nucleation criterion in another. Whether it qualifies in both roles depends on the supersaturation, temperature, surface condition and protocol used.

Does air pollution reduce or increase ice nucleation?

There is no universal direction. Pollution can add new particles, alter hygroscopicity and coat mineral or biological surfaces; those changes may enhance or suppress ice activity depending on the coating and cloud conditions.

Why do CCN measurements use supersaturation instead of relative humidity alone?

Cloud droplets form when vapor exceeds equilibrium over a curved particle surface, so the relevant threshold is the small supersaturation reached in a rising parcel. Reporting supersaturation makes activation results comparable to the cloud process being represented.

Are INP important in tropical clouds?

They can be important whenever a tropical cloud reaches sufficiently cold levels, even if the cloud begins in warm, humid air. Clouds that never enter a cold mixed-phase region can precipitate without an INP-controlled ice stage.
