DNS, firewall, and web-proxy logs can expose command-and-control (C2) when analysts correlate them with time, destination, traffic direction, asset role, and endpoint process data. A long encoded DNS label, an unexpected outbound connection, or a periodic web request is an investigative lead—not proof of compromise. Confidence rises when independent records show the same host resolving a suspicious domain, connecting to the resulting infrastructure, and doing so through an unusual process or policy-violating path.
This guide explains what each log source can show, how to join the records into a timeline, how encrypted DNS changes the investigation, and how to avoid false positives caused by normal software, cloud services, maintenance, or incomplete telemetry.
What does command and control look like in network logs?
Command and control is the communication channel an adversary uses to issue instructions to compromised systems and receive results. The channel may use DNS, HTTP or HTTPS, another application protocol, or a cloud service that appears ordinary on the network. Logs rarely identify C2 by themselves; they reveal behaviors that become meaningful when combined with endpoint and asset context.
MITRE ATT&CK describes DNS as attractive because it is widely used and often broadly permitted. Its technique page says: “Adversaries may communicate using the Domain Name System (DNS) application layer protocol to avoid detection/network filtering by blending in with existing traffic.” See MITRE ATT&CK T1071.004. DNS can carry commands in records, support tunneling, or provide infrequent beaconing that blends into routine lookups.

The useful question is not “Is this one event malicious?” It is “Does this host show a sequence of DNS, connection, request, and process behaviors that is inconsistent with its role and policy?”
What can each log source tell an investigator?
Each source observes a different layer. Their value comes from joining those views rather than treating one as a complete record of activity.
| Source | What it observes | Identity and context | Important blind spot | Best corroboration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DNS logs | Query and response names, record types, resolver activity, and timing | Client address or identity, resolver, query time, and sometimes response data | Encrypted DNS or missing resolver visibility can hide query content; schemas differ by resolver | Process identity, resulting destination IP, repeated timing, and policy compliance |
| Firewall or flow logs | Source and destination addresses, ports, protocol, connection times, and potentially byte counts | Asset, interface, rule action, direction, and connection outcome where deployed | Often lacks URL, DNS payload, and the initiating process; exact fields depend on the device | DNS resolution, proxy requests, outbound-volume pattern, and endpoint connection events |
| Web-proxy logs | Web destination and request metadata for traffic that traverses the proxy | Client, timestamp, host or URL fields where captured, method, status, and transferred bytes where configured | Direct, non-proxied traffic is absent; HTTPS inspection and URL logging vary by policy | DNS name, firewall connection, TLS or HTTP metadata, and asset role |
| Endpoint and process telemetry | Process creation and process-to-network or process-to-DNS associations | Executable, user, parent process, host, and connection event when collected | Coverage depends on the endpoint agent and operating system | DNS content, flow records, proxy requests, and process reputation or change history |
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s incident-response guidance identifies firewall, web-proxy, DNS, network-traffic, cloud-activity, and IDS/IPS logs as useful C2 investigation sources. Your environment may not retain every field listed above, so document what is actually collected before writing detections.

DNS is most informative when you examine content, timing, resolver path, and the client process together. A single unusual name can be legitimate; a repeated pattern tied to an unexpected executable is more concerning.
Inspect names for encoding and tunneling clues
Group queries by client and inspect the labels beneath the registered domain. Long, high-entropy, or encoded-looking labels can indicate data being placed in subdomains. Frequent changes in label values, many unique labels under one domain, or labels that resemble hexadecimal or base-32 data deserve review. These are heuristics, not universal thresholds: software updates, telemetry systems, content-delivery networks, and tracking services can also generate long names.
Look at record types as well as names. Unusual use of TXT, NULL, or other records may support a tunneling hypothesis, but legitimate verification and service-discovery systems use varied types too. Compare the observed type with the application and asset role.

Analyze timing instead of relying on volume
Beaconing can be sparse: a host may resolve a domain once every few minutes or hours to avoid a conspicuous burst. Conversely, a legitimate resolver, browser, or update agent may create very high volume. MITRE’s Behavioral Detection of DNS Protocol Misuse for Command and Control strategy explicitly cautions: “do not alert solely on high DNS volume.” Use intervals, regularity, response patterns, and the subsequent network connection instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Check resolver policy and client identity
Identify which recursive resolvers your architecture approves and whether clients can query external resolvers directly. A workstation that suddenly sends DNS to an Internet address instead of the organization’s resolver may indicate bypass, misconfiguration, or an application using encrypted DNS. Validate the device’s role, software inventory, and recent changes before escalating.
Use tunable analytics, not fixed cutoffs
MITRE analytics such as DET0400 identify query length, entropy, frequency, process image, and domain reputation as tunable elements. DET0934 combines DNS content and resolver-policy evidence rather than treating one feature as decisive. Establish local baselines for workstations, servers, development systems, security tools, and appliances; their normal DNS profiles differ substantially.
What should I look for in firewall and proxy logs?
Firewall and proxy records show what happened after—or despite—a DNS lookup: where the host connected, which protocol and port it used, when it connected, and whether data moved. They add the destination and traffic context needed to test a DNS hypothesis.
Unexpected destinations and ports
For a suspicious client, list destination IP addresses, domains where available, ports, protocols, rule decisions, and connection outcomes. Compare them with approved services, known business partners, software documentation, and the asset’s normal role. A domain resolving to a new address is not automatically malicious; cloud providers and content-delivery networks change infrastructure frequently.
Outbound volume and direction
Review bytes sent and received when available. A large outbound-to-inbound imbalance, repeated small uploads, or a server initiating Internet connections that its role does not require can strengthen a C2 hypothesis. MITRE DET0444 describes outbound-volume imbalance and beacon-like timing as mutable analytics, not fixed enterprise-wide thresholds.

Regularity and connection outcomes
Plot connection times. Near-regular intervals, repeated short sessions, and retries after failed connections can indicate automated beaconing. Check whether the destination accepted the connection, whether a proxy returned an error, and whether the client rapidly changed destinations. Human browsing usually has a different distribution of timing and request context, but automation is common in legitimate agents too.
Proxy-specific request context
Where the proxy records it, examine host, URL path, method, status code, user agent, authentication identity, and transferred bytes. A client repeatedly requesting a narrow path or sending small POST requests to an unfamiliar host warrants correlation with process and DNS data. Do not assume every proxy logs full URLs or decrypts HTTPS; coverage depends on configuration and policy.
How do I correlate DNS queries with outbound connections?
Build a timeline that joins records by host, time, resolver, destination, and process. The following workflow works even when some fields are missing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Establish coverage and policy. Inventory recursive resolvers, direct external-DNS access, approved DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) or DNS-over-TLS (DoT), proxy routing, firewall retention, and endpoint telemetry. Record which assets are permitted to access the Internet and which log fields are actually retained.
- Start with the client. Group DNS queries and network events by workstation, server, container, or other asset identity. Normalize timestamps to one time zone and account for clock skew.
- Find the lookup-to-connection sequence. Compare the query time with subsequent connections from the same host. Determine whether the queried name resolved to the contacted address, whether the connection used the expected port and protocol, and whether a proxy request followed.
- Add process evidence. If endpoint data exists, identify the executable and parent process that made the DNS request or opened the socket. Compare its path, signer, installation time, user, and expected network behavior with the asset’s role.
- Compare peers and history. Check whether other hosts made the same queries or connections, whether the pattern is new, and whether a software deployment, maintenance window, or configuration change explains it.
- Preserve and pivot. Save the relevant DNS, firewall, proxy, endpoint, cloud, and IDS/IPS records with their original timestamps. Pivot on the domain and IP address to identify additional affected hosts, then follow incident-response procedures when independent signals support the concern.
MITRE detection strategies describe combining process identity, network flows, DNS content, outbound volume, and connection timing. CISA also identifies domains and IP addresses as important investigation artifacts.
Can DNS-over-HTTPS hide C2 traffic?
DoH and DoT can hide DNS query contents from passive network sensors because the lookup travels inside encrypted sessions. They do not make the activity invisible: resolver destinations, connection timing, endpoint process data, and policy violations may remain observable.
First determine whether encrypted DNS is approved and which resolvers are allowed. Then look for clients connecting directly to public resolver endpoints, bypassing the organization’s resolver, or using an application that normally should not provide its own DNS. Correlate that flow with the process that opened it and with later connections to the resolved or contacted infrastructure.

Treat every single indicator as a lead. Confidence increases when multiple independent observations agree and no legitimate explanation fits.
Establish the expected baseline
- Document normal resolvers, proxy paths, approved cloud services, update systems, security agents, and administrative tools.
- Classify assets by role. A mail server, developer workstation, domain controller, and industrial appliance should not share one DNS or egress baseline.
- Record maintenance windows, software rollouts, certificate changes, and incident-response activity that can temporarily alter traffic.
Seek corroborating combinations
- Encoded or unusually variable DNS labels plus a matching outbound connection.
- A new domain or address plus regular callbacks from an unexpected process.
- Resolver bypass plus suspicious destination, TLS/HTTP metadata, or endpoint process evidence.
- Repeated small outbound transfers plus a destination not required by the asset’s role.
- The same domain, IP address, or timing pattern appearing on multiple hosts without an approved shared service explaining it.
Reputation results can prioritize work, but reputation alone does not establish compromise. Conversely, a domain with no negative reputation is not proof of safety, especially when infrastructure is new, compromised, or privately hosted.

Alerting on one feature
High DNS volume, a long label, an unfamiliar port, or a newly registered domain can all be benign. Require context and a second source before treating the event as an incident.
Assuming every log has the same fields
Firewall records may omit DNS names; proxies may omit full URLs; endpoint agents may not capture process-to-network mappings; and encrypted traffic may expose only metadata. Design detections around confirmed fields and label missing visibility as a coverage gap.
Ignoring legitimate cloud and software behavior
Modern applications use rotating addresses, telemetry domains, certificate services, and content-delivery networks. Validate ownership, software version, deployment history, and asset role before blocking a destination.

Joining events with loose timestamps
Clock drift, buffering, and resolver caching can make a lookup precede a connection by seconds or hours. Normalize time, account for cache behavior, and preserve event ingestion time separately from event occurrence time when available.
Blocking before preserving evidence
Emergency containment may be necessary, but retain the original records and document the rule, time, affected host, and expected side effects. A premature block can erase the very traffic needed to understand scope.
How should an organization improve detection coverage?
Start with visibility, then tune analytics to local behavior. Ensure recursive resolvers retain query and response metadata, firewalls retain connection and byte information, proxies retain the request fields permitted by policy, and endpoint tools record process creation and network associations where feasible. Define retention long enough to compare periodic activity and investigate delayed reports.

Treat their elements as starting points: thresholds, approved resolvers, asset groups, and process allowlists must reflect your environment.
Finally, test the workflow with benign administrative and software-update traffic. Confirm that analysts can move from a DNS event to a firewall flow, proxy request, endpoint process, and related hosts without losing identity or time context. That operational path matters more than a detector that produces impressive but unactionable alert counts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What DNS record types are most useful for C2 hunting?
A and AAAA records help connect a queried name to an address, while TXT and other less-common types may support tunneling hypotheses. Record type alone is not malicious; compare it with the application, resolver policy, query content, and subsequent connections.
How long should DNS and firewall logs be retained for beacon investigations?
The required period depends on the beacon interval, incident-report delay, and storage limits. Retention must be long enough to compare repeated sparse lookups and connection attempts, with timestamps preserved so analysts can distinguish event time from ingestion time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan a legitimate application look like DNS tunneling?
Yes. Telemetry agents, service discovery, content-delivery systems, and verification services can generate long or changing labels. Verify the executable, deployment history, domain ownership, asset role, and whether the same pattern appears across approved installations.
What should I do if my network has no proxy logs?
Use DNS, firewall or flow records, endpoint process telemetry, TLS metadata, cloud-activity logs, and IDS/IPS data to reconstruct the sequence. Treat the missing proxy layer as a documented visibility limitation and avoid assuming that absent requests mean absent web traffic.
