Delta on iPhone gives you two separate ways to preserve progress: the emulator’s own save-state snapshots and the game’s native save system. Its optional Delta Sync service can copy games, saves, save states and settings between devices through Google Drive or Dropbox. Controllers work after you pair them in iOS Bluetooth settings, and Delta supports major Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch families with per-system button remapping.
The safest setup is to keep using the in-game save when a title provides one, use a locked Delta save state for a quick checkpoint, enable Delta Sync if you move between devices, and never edit Delta’s cloud files manually.
How does Delta save game progress on an iPhone?
Delta’s pause menu includes Save/Load Save States. A save state is an emulator snapshot of the game at a particular moment, including the emulated console’s memory and current position. It is different from the save file a game writes through its own menu or battery-backed cartridge memory.
The official Delta materials document three protections around save states:
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Locking: a save state can be locked so it cannot be accidentally overwritten.
- Automatic backups: Delta automatically creates backup save states.
- Quick Saves: an external controller can be assigned to trigger a save without opening the pause menu.
Because game cores and titles do not all handle native saves identically, do not assume that every game’s cartridge or battery save behaves exactly the same way. For important progress, save through the game first, then create a Delta save state as a second checkpoint.
How to create and protect a save state
- Open the game in Delta and pause it to display Delta’s controls.
- Choose Save/Load Save States.
- Select a save-state slot and save the current position.
- Use the lock option on a state you want to protect from accidental replacement.
- When you need to return to that point, open the same menu and choose Load for the slot.
Automatic backups are useful when a newer state is overwritten or becomes unusable, but they are not a substitute for keeping a game’s own save file. A controller can also be mapped to Quick Save and Quick Load, which is faster during difficult sections or before experimenting with a choice.
What is the difference between a Delta save state and a game’s own save?
A native game save is created by the game itself, usually from an in-game menu or an automatic checkpoint. A Delta save state is created by the emulator and captures the running session. They serve different purposes and should be treated as separate data.

|---|---|---|
| Created by | The game’s own save system | Delta’s emulator snapshot feature |
| Typical use | Long-term progress intended by the game | Instant checkpoints at almost any moment |
| Access | Usually through the game’s menus or automatic checkpoints | Delta pause menu: Save/Load Save States |
| Protection | Depends on the game and its file format | Can be locked; Delta also makes automatic backup states |
| Controller shortcut | Not defined by Delta’s emulator controls | Can be assigned to Quick Save and Quick Load |
| Compatibility behavior | Varies by game and emulation core | Also depends on the running game and core; Delta does not promise identical behavior for every title |
For a reliable routine, use the game’s save command before quitting, create a locked save state before a risky section, and use quick saves only as a convenience rather than your sole copy of progress.
How do I turn on Delta Sync?
Delta Sync is optional. It synchronizes Delta data through either Google Drive or Dropbox, allowing the same library and progress to be used on another iPhone, iPad or compatible device signed in to the same service.
- Open Delta and go to Settings.
- Tap Delta Sync.
- Under Service, choose Google Drive or Dropbox.
- Sign in and authorize Delta to use that service.
- Return to the Delta Sync screen and check for the Sync Status line, which appears after a service is connected.
Repeat the setup on each device, using the same cloud account. Let the initial synchronization finish before opening a game on the second device so that its library and progress are present.
What does Delta Sync include?
Delta’s documentation describes Sync as covering more than the ROM library. Depending on the data category and the official version of Delta you are using, the synchronized set includes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Games supplied by the user
- Native game save files
- Delta save states
- Save-state version history and restoration options
- Cheats
- Controller skins
- Controller mappings
- BIOS files
The press materials specifically mention version histories and the ability to restore an earlier version. That gives you a recovery path when an older copy is needed instead of relying only on the newest synchronized data.
Sync is not a game store and it does not provide copyrighted games. Delta does not distribute ROMs; you must supply your own game files. The same rule applies when setting up another device: the files being synchronized are files you provided, not downloads supplied by Delta.
How are Google Drive and Dropbox different for Delta Sync?
Both services act as Delta’s synchronization and backup destination, but they expose the stored data differently.
| Service | What you see | Safe practice |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | Delta says its files are not visible in your normal Google Drive file list. | Manage synchronization from Delta rather than looking for a folder in Drive. |
| Dropbox | Delta’s files are visible in Dropbox. | Use Dropbox as transport and backup storage; do not rename, move or edit Delta files manually. |
The official guide warns that editing Dropbox files can cause data loss. Visibility does not mean the files are ordinary documents: Delta expects its own names, structure and metadata. If you need to recover an earlier copy, use Delta’s version-history and restore functions instead of changing files in Dropbox.

How do I move Delta saves from an iPhone to an iPad?
Use Delta Sync rather than copying individual files by hand.
- On the original iPhone, enable Delta Sync in Settings > Delta Sync and connect Google Drive or Dropbox.
- Wait until the service is connected and the current data has synchronized.
- Install Delta on the iPad and sign in to the same cloud service from the same Delta Sync screen.
- Allow the iPad to complete its initial synchronization before launching a game.
- Open the title and check both its native in-game save and its Delta save-state list.
The ROM on both devices must represent the same game file for a save to be useful. A save created for one release, region or modified ROM may not load correctly with a different file, even when the cloud transfer itself succeeds.
Which controllers work with Delta on iPhone?
Delta supports iOS-compatible Bluetooth and connected controllers from several console families, as well as keyboards and MFi controllers. The official controller list names the following hardware:
| Family | Supported examples |
|---|---|
| Xbox | Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708), Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controller, and Xbox Series S/X controllers |
| PlayStation | PlayStation DualShock 4 and PlayStation 5 DualSense |
| Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons and Nintendo Switch Online controllers |
| Other iOS input | iOS-compatible connected keyboards and MFi controllers |
When a controller is active, Delta displays the game full screen without the touch-controller skin. You can also navigate Delta’s menus from the controller. Mapping is customizable separately by system and controller, so a layout change for one console does not have to replace the layouts used by your other systems.

- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the controller’s name when it appears under available devices and wait for it to show as connected.
- Open Delta and go to Settings.
- Choose Player 1 under Controllers.
- Select the connected controller from the device list.
Repeat the Player 1 selection if you pair a different controller later. Pairing in iOS and selecting the device in Delta are two separate steps; completing only one leaves the controller unavailable inside a game.
How do I remap buttons and add quick saves to a controller?
Delta lets you customize mappings per system and controller. This is useful when a game’s original layout feels awkward on a modern pad or when you want emulator commands on dedicated buttons.
- Connect the controller in iOS Bluetooth settings.
- In Delta, open Settings > Controllers and select the relevant player and controller.
- Choose the system-specific mapping or the controller profile you want to change.
- Assign the game buttons to the physical inputs you prefer.
- If available in the profile, map Quick Save, Quick Load and Fast Forward to convenient inputs.
- Launch a game from that system and test every changed button before relying on the layout for a long session.
Quick Save, Quick Load and Fast Forward are emulator functions, not buttons that existed on the original console. Keeping them on less-used inputs helps prevent an accidental load or speed change during ordinary play.

Why did a Delta save disappear after I changed devices?
Check the synchronization path and the type of save before assuming the progress is gone.
The second device is not using the same Sync service
Open Settings > Delta Sync on both devices and confirm that each is signed in to the same Google Drive or Dropbox account. A device connected to a different account has no reason to show the first device’s data.
The initial synchronization has not finished
Look for the Sync Status line and give the new device time to receive the library and progress before launching the title. Opening a game immediately can make it appear that no save exists simply because the relevant data has not arrived yet.
You are checking the wrong save type
Look in the game’s own save/load menu for a native save, and in Delta’s Save/Load Save States menu for an emulator snapshot. A native save will not appear as a numbered Delta state, and a state will not necessarily appear in the game’s cartridge-save menu.
The game files do not match
Delta’s troubleshooting guidance warns that corrupted or altered ROMs can freeze or fail to run. A different release or modified copy can also make an otherwise valid save unusable. Re-add the original, unaltered game file you supplied and test the matching save again.
A Dropbox file was changed outside Delta
If you edited, renamed or reorganized Delta’s visible Dropbox files, stop making further changes. The official guide warns that manual edits can cause data loss; use Delta’s version history and restore tools where available.
Where can I install Delta, and what do I need before playing?
Delta’s distribution route depends on your location. The guide states that Delta is available through AltStore PAL in European Union countries and through the App Store outside the EU.
- An iPhone or iPad that can run the available Delta build for your region
- Your own legally obtained ROM files
- Optional: a Google Drive or Dropbox account if you want Delta Sync
- Optional: an iOS-compatible Bluetooth controller, keyboard or MFi controller
Delta does not supply ROMs. If a game freezes or will not launch, verify the file before changing controller or sync settings; the troubleshooting guide identifies corrupted or altered ROMs as a common cause of failure.
Which setup is best for your play style?
| Your priority | Recommended Delta setup |
|---|---|
| Play on one phone and keep things simple | Use the game’s native save plus occasional Delta save states; Sync is optional. |
| Move between iPhone and iPad | Enable Delta Sync with the same Google Drive or Dropbox account on every device. |
| Recover from an accidental overwrite | Lock important save states and use Delta’s automatic backups or version restoration. |
| Console-style controls | Pair an Xbox, PlayStation or Switch controller in iOS, then select it under Delta’s Player 1 controller settings. |
| Fast experimentation or challenge play | Map Quick Save, Quick Load and Fast Forward to the external controller. |
| Maximum portability with minimal cloud exposure | Use Google Drive knowing Delta’s files remain hidden; do not expect a browsable folder. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Delta without enabling Delta Sync?
Yes. Delta Sync is optional, so local games, native saves and save states can still be used when no cloud service is connected. You lose the convenience of automatic transfer and cloud version history between devices.
Do I need a cloud account to use a Bluetooth controller?
No. Controller pairing is independent of Delta Sync: pair the hardware in iOS Bluetooth settings, then select it under Delta’s Player 1 controller settings. A Google Drive or Dropbox account is only needed for cloud synchronization.
Can I use more than one controller layout in Delta?
Yes. Delta stores mappings by system and controller, allowing a layout for one console or pad without forcing the same assignments everywhere. Select the relevant system profile before changing buttons.
What should I do before deleting Delta from an iPhone?
First let Delta Sync finish with your chosen Google Drive or Dropbox account, then verify the game and its save appear on another device. This gives you a cloud copy before removing the local app.
