ChatGPT ads can use the context of your current conversation to choose which ad to show. If personalized ads are enabled, OpenAI says selected signals from your wider ChatGPT experience—such as past chats, memory and ad interactions—may also affect selection. To limit that broader use, turn off personalization in Settings > Ad Controls. For a sensitive conversation, Temporary Chat is the clearest built-in option: it does not show ads, create memories or appear in chat history.
What data can ChatGPT ads use?
OpenAI describes ad selection as a combination of the current conversation and information about the ad itself. With personalized ads enabled, signals from elsewhere in your ChatGPT experience may also be used. The distinction matters: turning off personalization limits the broader signals, but it does not necessarily stop the current thread from influencing ad relevance.
Signals used to select an ad
OpenAI says the system may consider the current chat’s context and intent, the ad’s landing page, title and copy, and context hints and targeting selections supplied by the advertiser. When personalization is on, possible additional signals include personalized model responses, ad interactions, past chats and memory. These are potential inputs to ad selection; they do not mean every item is used for every ad.

For example, if a conversation is about a particular kind of product, its topic may help determine which ad is relevant. Turning off personalization does not make the current thread invisible to ad selection: OpenAI says that thread may still be used. It does limit the use of other chat threads, ad history and topics for selecting ads.

Can advertisers read your chats or identify you?
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive your conversations or personal details from ChatGPT. They receive aggregated, non-identifying performance reporting, such as total views or clicks—not the chat text or a record of who saw or clicked an ad.
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chat history, memories, your name or email, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information such as health, mental-health or political topics. Its stated principle is: “We keep your conversations with ChatGPT private from advertisers, and we never sell your data to advertisers.”
There is one important distinction: if you choose to message an advertiser through an ad, that advertiser can see the messages you send directly to it. That is different from the advertiser being given access to your ChatGPT conversation or history.

Use the ad controls in your ChatGPT settings. This is a free setting that narrows the signals used for ad selection; it does not guarantee that ads will disappear.

- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Ad Controls.
- Turn off ad personalization.
- If you also want to remove the ads data used for personalization, choose the option to clear ads data in the same controls.
With personalization off, OpenAI says it will not use other chat threads, ad history or topics to inform ad selection. The current conversation may still influence which ad appears. Clearing ads data is a separate action from switching personalization off: OpenAI says deleted ads data may remain on its servers for up to 30 days before removal.
These controls address advertising, not every privacy setting in ChatGPT. If your goal is to manage saved information, review Memory separately; if you want to manage model-improvement choices, do not assume that changing Ad Controls changes those settings.
Which privacy option should you choose?
The right choice depends on whether you want to limit ad targeting, avoid ads during a particular conversation, or use ChatGPT without ads more generally. These options differ in privacy scope, convenience and, in some cases, cost.

OpenAI says ads may appear for Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not have ads. As of October 25, 2026, the rollout information says testing began in the United States on February 9, 2026, with gradual expansion to selected regions. Do not assume that every Free or Go account sees ads: rollout and no-ads options can depend on region and timing.

For one sensitive conversation
Start a Temporary Chat before discussing the subject. It combines the strongest ad-specific protection described here—no ads—with no chat-history entry and no memory creation. It also does not help improve models. If you need a persistent conversation with its usual history and memory behavior, you can instead turn off ad personalization, understanding that the current thread may still inform ad selection.
For ongoing use without ads
Check whether a free no-ads option is available to your account; OpenAI says that option may come with additional limits. If you need an ad-free account without those particular free-option limits, Plus and Pro are ad-free. Business, Enterprise and Edu are also listed as ad-free account types, but they are distinct offerings rather than settings you can switch on within a Free account.
How do you manage Memory and ad data?
Memory and ad controls have different jobs. Memory is optional and can be reviewed, updated, deleted or turned off. Those actions help manage saved memories; they are not a substitute for turning off ad personalization or clearing ads data.
To reduce ad-related use of wider ChatGPT signals, turn off personalization. To remove the ads data used for ads, clear it in Ad Controls and allow for the stated deletion period of up to 30 days. To stop new memories from being created in a particular sensitive conversation, use Temporary Chat.

Keep the scope of each action in mind: clearing ads data does not, based on the stated ad controls, mean that all chat history or saved memories have also been erased. Likewise, deleting a memory is not the same as clearing ads data.
How do you hide or report an ad?
Use the three-dot menu on the ad. Hide dismisses it; Report ad also hides it and sends it to OpenAI for review. These actions let you respond to a particular ad, but they are not a general opt-out from ads or personalization.
Do ads affect ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. The company describes ads as paid placements run on separate systems and labeled apart from the answer. Seeing an ad should not be taken as an endorsement by OpenAI of the advertiser or its product.
Are ads shown near sensitive topics or to people under 18?
OpenAI says ads are not eligible near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health or politics. Its ad policy also excludes vulnerable user-model interactions and categories including privacy, self-harm, weapons and other sensitive or regulated contexts. This describes ad eligibility policy; it should not be read as a guarantee about every individual ad-selection decision.

What should you do for the strongest practical privacy?
For an individual sensitive conversation, start a Temporary Chat. For everyday use, disable ad personalization and review Memory according to what you want saved. If you want no ads across your account, check the free no-ads option where available or choose an ad-free plan. Treat each control as scoped: ad personalization, stored memories, chat history and model improvement are not interchangeable settings.
