ChatGPT ads are a limited test for eligible Free and Go users, while Google can show ads around AI Overviews in more markets and within some Overviews in a narrower set of countries. OpenAI says its ads are labeled, separate from answers, and do not influence them; Google matches eligible Search ads to the query and, for in-Overview placements, the Overview content. Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free, but current evidence does not support a blanket claim about every other chatbot. This comparison reflects the platforms’ published policies as of October 25, 2026—not an independent audit of which ads users actually see or how well they perform.
What is the main difference between ChatGPT ads and Google Search ads?
The main difference is where the ad appears and how the platform describes matching it. ChatGPT’s test places a labeled ad below a response and may use the current conversation’s context. Google Search can show ads above or below an AI Overview, and eligible ads can also appear within some Overviews; those in-Overview ads are matched to both the search query and the Overview content.
That makes the formats related but not interchangeable. ChatGPT describes a conversational ad system separate from its generated answer. Google describes AI Overview ads as part of its existing Search advertising ecosystem, using eligible ads and campaign types already available on the platform.

| Comparison | ChatGPT | Google Search AI Overviews |
|---|---|---|
| Documented placement | Main test placement is below a ChatGPT response; a multi-image visual format is also being tested during image generation. | Ads may appear above or below an AI Overview; in-Overview ads are available in a more limited set of markets and in English. |
| How relevance is described | May consider the thread’s context and intent, the ad’s landing page and creative, advertiser context hints, and selected broader-use signals if personalization is enabled. | For ads within an Overview, considers both the search query and the Overview content. |
| Relationship to the answer | OpenAI says ads are clearly labeled, separate from responses, and do not influence them. | The cited Google documentation describes ad placement and matching, but does not establish that an ad is part of the Overview’s generated answer. |
| Advertising system | OpenAI describes CPM and CPC buying options and its own ad-matching system. | Eligible existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns can serve when ads win the auction and meet relevance criteria. |
| Advertiser access to conversations | OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chats, chat history, memories, or personal details; the early test provides aggregated performance information such as views and clicks. | The cited Google help page explains matching and campaign eligibility, not access to a person’s private conversations. |
These are platform descriptions, not independently verified serving behavior. Neither source establishes a comparable ad-effectiveness result, so the mechanics should not be mistaken for evidence that one format converts better or is more useful.

For users, the practical comparison is therefore not simply “chat ad versus search ad.” It is also whether the placement is adjacent to a generated response or part of a broader results page, what context the platform says can inform relevance, and which controls are documented. For advertisers, the distinction is between buying options in ChatGPT’s ad system and qualifying for a placement through existing Google campaigns and auctions.
Where do ads appear in ChatGPT and in Google AI Overviews?
ChatGPT’s main described ad position is below a response, with visual separation and clear labeling. Google has two distinct placements: ads around an Overview and ads within one. The availability of those placements differs substantially.
ChatGPT: below a response, with a visual format also in test
OpenAI describes a single ad unit at a time, which may contain multiple images. It is also testing a multi-image visual format during image generation. The documented test should not be described as a permanent or universally available ChatGPT feature; the rollout is gradual and limited to eligible users in select regions. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT ads FAQ.

It also does not establish how often a person will see an ad, or that one will appear in every conversation. The placement is described as separate from the response, so readers should distinguish the assistant’s answer from any labeled promotional unit shown alongside the experience.
Google: around an Overview versus inside it
Google’s documentation distinguishes ads above or below an AI Overview from ads within the Overview itself. Ads above or below are eligible in the more than 200 markets where AI Overviews are available. In-Overview ads are documented in English on mobile and desktop in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States. Availability of an Overview does not mean an in-Overview ad is available in that market. Google lists the current placement details in its AI Overviews advertising guidance.
The distinction matters when someone says that Google “shows ads in AI Overviews.” That statement can describe ads adjacent to an Overview across a broad set of markets, or the narrower in-Overview format. The two should not be conflated.
Geography and language are separate limits here. Google’s listed in-Overview availability applies to English and to the 12 named countries, on both mobile and desktop. The broader eligibility for ads above or below an Overview is tied to markets where Overviews are available, not to the narrower country list for ads inside them. Both descriptions are time-sensitive: platform availability can change, so a user or advertiser should check the current platform page rather than assume that a format is present wherever an AI answer appears.
How are ChatGPT and Google ads selected?
Both platforms describe context as relevant, but the context and ad systems differ. ChatGPT’s matching can use the ongoing thread, while Google’s in-Overview matching considers the query and the Overview content.
Rank #2
ChatGPT matching uses thread context, not just a search term
OpenAI says its system can consider the current conversation’s context and intent, the ad’s creative and landing page, and context hints supplied by the advertiser. If ad personalization is enabled, selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience may also help determine relevance. OpenAI’s advertiser guidance says those hints can guide matching but are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in particular conversations. The platform’s description is in its advertiser basics documentation.
In practical terms, an ad’s appearance is not evidence that an advertiser chose a particular phrase from a user’s conversation as a keyword. OpenAI describes contextual relevance and advertiser hints, not guaranteed one-to-one keyword placement.
The personalization setting affects one part of that description: whether selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience may help inform relevance. It is not a switch that removes ads altogether. The current conversation’s context is separately listed as a factor in selection, so readers should not interpret turning personalization off as making ad matching entirely context-free.
Google’s in-Overview ads consider query and Overview content
Google says ads within an AI Overview can be relevant to both the query and the content of the Overview. For example, a search about cleaning a pool may lead to an Overview with cleaning steps, alongside an ad for a pool vacuum. The query need not use obvious purchase language for a related ad to be considered.
Existing text and Shopping ads from eligible Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns may show when they win the auction and address both the query and the Overview information. Advertisers cannot directly target only AI Overview placements, according to Google’s published guidance. That makes the placement a possible outcome of an eligible campaign and auction, rather than a separate placement that an advertiser can reserve by targeting it alone.
For an advertiser assessing the two systems, that means the route into a placement differs. OpenAI offers CPM and CPC buying options and describes advertiser context hints, although those hints do not guarantee a specific conversation. Google’s documentation describes eligible ads entering an auction from existing campaign types; it does not describe a dedicated control for buying only an in-Overview position. An advertiser should not treat either platform’s context description as a promise of placement.
Do ChatGPT ads affect answers, and can advertisers see chats?
OpenAI says ChatGPT ads do not affect the answer and that advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT responses. It also says advertisers do not receive users’ chats, history, memories, or personal details; during the early test, advertisers receive aggregated performance information such as views and clicks.
Those statements distinguish two separate things: the system may use context to decide which ad is relevant, but OpenAI says the advertiser does not get access to the underlying conversation. OpenAI also says ads are not eligible near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health, or politics. These are the company’s stated policies, not an independent audit of ad delivery. The current details and controls are described in OpenAI’s FAQ.
Google’s cited documentation explains how ads may be matched to an Overview and which campaign types can serve, but it does not provide a directly comparable disclosure about advertiser access to private conversations. Avoid treating the absence of that detail on the cited page as proof of a particular data practice.
For readers, “does not influence the answer” is OpenAI’s description of the relationship between advertising and response generation; it is not a claim that ads are never relevant to a conversation. Likewise, an ad can be selected using contextual signals without giving the advertiser access to the user’s private chat, according to OpenAI’s stated policy. Keep those two questions—how the system selects an ad and what the advertiser can see—separate when evaluating privacy claims.
Who can see ChatGPT ads, and what controls are available?
OpenAI says the test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, and is rolling out gradually to eligible Free and Go users in select regions. It says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads, and ads are not shown to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18. Availability can change, so these plan and age details describe OpenAI’s published test policy rather than a promise that every qualifying account will see ads.

OpenAI says users can manage ad personalization, dismiss ads, provide feedback, see why an ad was shown, and clear ads data. Turning personalization off does not remove ads; it changes whether selected signals from broader ChatGPT use may inform relevance. The current user-facing choices are detailed in the ChatGPT ads FAQ.
These controls answer different needs. Dismissing an ad removes it from the user’s view; feedback lets the user respond to it; “why this ad” provides an explanation; clearing ads data and managing personalization address data and relevance settings. None of those options, as described by OpenAI, turns off the test’s ads entirely. A person who wants to know whether the feature applies to them should consider plan, age eligibility, region, and the gradual rollout rather than infer availability from another user’s account.
Google’s cited overview-ads guidance focuses on advertiser eligibility, placement, and matching. It does not establish a comparable set of user controls for ads in AI Overviews, so this comparison cannot claim that the platforms offer equivalent controls.
What do advertisers need to know about buying or measuring these ads?
For ChatGPT, OpenAI describes both cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) and cost-per-click (CPC) buying options. Advertiser context hints can guide matching, but OpenAI says they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a particular conversation. The published materials do not support claims about guaranteed reach, conversion rates, or a minimum budget.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor Google, in-Overview ads may come from existing eligible Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns. The ad must win the auction and address the query and Overview information. Google says advertisers cannot directly target only the in-Overview placement, and its documentation says segmented reporting for those placements is not currently offered. That limits an advertiser’s ability to isolate the placement’s performance using the reporting described on that page.
Those mechanics suggest a practical checklist before comparing campaigns: confirm that the format is available in the target market; verify which plans, campaign types, and placements are eligible; identify whether the buying model is CPM or CPC or an existing auction; and check what reporting can isolate the placement. On Google, the guidance says in-Overview placements cannot be directly targeted and segmented reporting is not currently offered. For ChatGPT, the published materials describe buying options and aggregated views and clicks in the early test, but do not specify guaranteed delivery or a minimum spend.
There is no named comparative statistic in the cited documentation that establishes which format is more effective. Google refers to internal 2024 data about users finding ads in AI Overviews helpful, but the reviewed guidance provides no numerical figure to compare. Treat performance claims as unproven unless backed by clearly specified, current measurement.
In particular, “helpful” is not interchangeable with a click, conversion, or sale. Google’s mention of internal 2024 feedback does not provide a number or a direct comparison with ChatGPT. A sound comparison would need clearly defined outcomes, comparable audiences and periods, and placement-level reporting—details not established by the cited platform pages.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What has Anthropic said about ads in Claude?
Anthropic said on February 4, 2026, that Claude will remain ad-free. The company’s stated rationale is that ads alongside Claude conversations or advertiser-influenced responses would conflict with the kind of assistant experience it intends to provide. Its announcement says: “There are many good places for advertising. A conversation with Claude is not one of them.” Read the statement in Anthropic’s announcement.
This is a stated company policy, not evidence about every AI chatbot. The available primary-source information does not establish a sufficiently complete, current consumer-ad policy for Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot, and it would be inaccurate to group them with Claude or ChatGPT without checking their current product, market, and policy details.
“Other AI chatbots” is not a single advertising category. A meaningful comparison would need to name a specific product and distinguish its consumer experience, market, and current policy. Claude’s announced position can be stated as Anthropic’s policy; it cannot be used to infer that Perplexity, Copilot, or every other assistant is ad-free—or that any of them uses ChatGPT-style placements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should readers interpret the comparison?
For a user, the useful distinction is whether an ad is visibly separate from an answer, what context may inform relevance, and what controls the platform documents. For an advertiser, it is whether the format can be directly targeted and measured, or is one possible placement within an existing campaign. The published material supports those distinctions, but not a ranking of ad quality or results.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- ChatGPT: limited and evolving test; eligible Free and Go users in select regions; ad below response; matching may use thread context and, when enabled, selected broader-use signals.
- Google AI Overviews: ads around Overviews are eligible across 200-plus markets where Overviews are available; in-Overview ads are limited to English on desktop and mobile in 12 listed countries; matching considers query and Overview content.
- Claude: Anthropic’s stated policy is to remain ad-free.
- Other chatbots: do not assume a common policy; the available evidence does not establish a complete current survey.
For users, a useful way to assess an ad is to check its label and position, distinguish it from the assistant’s answer, and review the controls the service actually offers. For advertisers, compare what can be bought, how eligibility is determined, and whether reporting can isolate the desired placement. Those steps keep stated policy, actual ad exposure, and campaign performance from being treated as the same thing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT put an ad below every answer?
The published OpenAI materials describe the placement and the eligible audience, but do not specify a fixed frequency or say that every response receives an ad. The appearance of an ad should therefore not be treated as a predictable part of every conversation.
Can a ChatGPT advertiser see what happens after someone clicks an ad?
OpenAI’s early-test description says advertisers receive aggregated ad-performance information such as views and clicks, and that they do not receive chats or personal details. The cited policy does not establish what information an advertiser or landing-page operator may collect after a person leaves ChatGPT, so that should not be inferred from OpenAI’s statement.
Do these ad formats have proven higher click-through or sales rates?
The cited platform materials do not provide a comparable independent performance study or numerical benchmark. Google mentions internal 2024 feedback about helpfulness but gives no figure in the cited documentation, so it cannot establish a sales or click-through advantage.

No. OpenAI says turning off personalization does not remove ads. It changes whether selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience may inform ad relevance; the current conversation may still be considered.
Are Google ads inside AI Overviews available wherever AI Overviews appear?
No. Google says ads above or below Overviews are eligible in 200-plus markets where Overviews are available, while ads within an Overview are listed for English on mobile and desktop in 12 countries: Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States.
Can advertisers buy only the in-Overview placement on Google?
Google says advertisers cannot directly target only AI Overview placements. Eligible ads from Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns may show if they win the auction and address both the query and Overview content.
Does Claude show ads like ChatGPT?
Anthropic said on February 4, 2026, that Claude will remain ad-free. That is Anthropic’s stated policy and should not be generalized to other chatbot products.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: ChatGPT’s evolving test uses labeled placements below responses for eligible Free and Go users; Google’s Search ads can appear around AI Overviews broadly, while in-Overview placements have narrower English-language availability. OpenAI says ads do not shape answers and advertisers do not see chats. Google uses eligible existing campaigns and does not offer direct targeting or segmented reporting for in-Overview placements in its cited guidance. Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free; do not assume that policy applies to every chatbot or that any format has proven better performance.
