To remove an existing friend in Minecraft, open that player’s profile, select Block, and confirm. Minecraft Help documents blocking as the method that immediately removes a current friend from your friends list. Blocking also stops the person’s activity visibility, chat, and invitations. If the name remains visible afterward, close and reopen Minecraft so the list can refresh.
The exact menus depend on your edition and platform. Bedrock’s multiplayer social area is Play → Friends; Java Edition has its own friends-list management interface, so its labels may not match Bedrock’s. The steps below explain what is established across the supported Microsoft-account social system and where interface differences matter.

Use the player’s profile and choose Block, then confirm. Minecraft Help states that blocking someone you are already friends with immediately removes that person from your friends list.
Follow these steps
- Launch Minecraft and sign in. Use the Microsoft account connected to the multiplayer profile where the friendship appears.
- Open the social or Friends area. In Bedrock, start at Play and open the Friends tab. On Java, open the edition’s friends-list or social-management control; the wording and location can differ by platform.
- Open the player’s profile. Select the friend you want to remove so the profile or player-actions menu appears.
- Select Block. Confirm the action when Minecraft asks. Blocking is the documented action for ending an existing friendship.
- Refresh the list if necessary. Close and reopen Minecraft if the person still appears. Minecraft Help warns that the displayed list may not update immediately.
After confirmation, the friendship is ended and the blocked player no longer has the normal visibility, chat, or invite access associated with that friendship.

What is the difference between blocking and muting a Minecraft friend?
Block removes the friendship; Mute keeps it. Choose based on whether you want to end the connection or only stop seeing chat.

Mute is therefore not an “unfriend” command. If your goal is to delete the relationship from the friends list, use Block rather than Mute.
How do I remove a friend on Minecraft Bedrock?
Bedrock’s documented multiplayer path starts at Play, then Friends. From there, open the player’s profile and use Block; the confirmation removes an existing friendship.
Bedrock procedure
- Open Minecraft Bedrock and verify that you are signed in to the intended Microsoft account.
- Choose Play from the main screen.
- Open the Friends tab. This is the Bedrock area for multiplayer friends; only online friends appear in the joinable-friends portion of the screen.
- Select the friend whose connection you want to end, then open the profile or player-actions menu.
- Choose Block and confirm.
- Return to the list. If the old name is still shown, quit and reopen the game to force a refresh.
Because the joinable-friends view is limited to people who are online, an offline player may not appear in that particular view. Use the broader social or profile list available on your platform when you need to manage a friend who is not currently joinable.

How do I unfriend someone in Minecraft Java Edition?
Java Edition provides a separate official friends-list management guide, and its controls can differ from Bedrock’s. The reliable part of the process is the same: reach the player’s profile in the Java social interface, choose Block, and confirm rather than assuming a Bedrock button sequence will appear unchanged.
Java checklist
- Start Java Edition and sign in with the Microsoft account used for multiplayer.
- Open the Java friends-list or social-management screen.
- Find the player and open that player’s profile or actions menu.
- Select Block and accept the confirmation.
- Reopen the game if the list still displays the old friendship.
The available labels can depend on the Java interface and the platform hosting it. Do not treat a missing Bedrock-style Play → Friends path as proof that removal is unavailable; look for Java’s dedicated friends-list controls instead.
Why is the friend still on my list after I blocked them?
The most likely explanation is a stale friends-list display, not a failed block. Minecraft Help says the list may not reflect the change until you close and reopen the game.
Refresh sequence
- Finish and confirm the block action rather than backing out of the confirmation dialog.
- Leave the social screen and return once to check whether the entry has disappeared.
- If it remains, close Minecraft completely, not just the current world.
- Launch Minecraft again and sign in to the same Microsoft account.
- Check the friends list again. If the player is still present, repeat the profile action and verify that the selected command was Block, not Mute.
Do not use the online-only joinable-friends area as the sole test: that view is designed to show friends who are currently online. Check the full social list or profile controls appropriate to your edition.

What account settings can prevent friend management?
Minecraft multiplayer social features use Microsoft accounts on supported Java and Bedrock platforms. For child accounts, Xbox Family settings control permissions for adding friends and following other players, so a parent or family organizer may need to change those permissions.
Account checks
- Confirm the account: Make sure the signed-in Microsoft account is the one that owns the friendship. Switching accounts can make the expected friend list appear to be missing.
- Check child-account controls: If the player is using a child account, family permissions can limit adding friends or following others. The account parent may need to review those settings.
- Separate removal from re-adding: Blocking ends the existing friendship. Any later connection requires the account to be allowed to add or follow players again under its family settings.
- Use the edition’s own controls: Bedrock and Java do not promise identical labels or navigation, even though both use Microsoft-account multiplayer features.
When should I block a friend instead of muting them?
Block when you want the relationship ended and the person’s multiplayer contact stopped. Mute is appropriate when you still want to remain friends but do not want their chat visible.
Use Block when you need to
- Remove the player from an existing friendship immediately.
- Stop that player’s activity visibility in the friendship context.
- Stop chat and invitations from that player.
- Prevent the old friendship from remaining while you decide whether to reconnect later.
Use Mute when you need to
- Keep the friendship intact.
- Hide chat without ending the social connection.
- Avoid a permanent-looking change when the problem is limited to message volume or unwanted conversation.
Choosing Mute and later expecting the name to vanish is the common mistake: muting changes chat visibility, not the friendship itself.
Can I reconnect after removing someone?
Blocking is a reversible social decision rather than a deletion of the other player’s account. If you later want to play together again, you can remove the block and use the normal friend-adding process permitted by the account and edition.

Before trying to reconnect
- Confirm that the account’s family permissions allow adding or following players.
- Use the same Microsoft account that made the original change.
- Look for the player through the current Java or Bedrock social controls instead of relying on a menu path from the other edition.
- Allow time for the list to refresh after changing the block status; reopening Minecraft is the documented way to refresh a stale list.
What should I do if there is no Block option?
A missing command usually means you are not viewing the player’s profile actions, you are in an online-only list, or your edition’s labels differ. Minecraft’s documented wording does not establish one universal button sequence for every device, so work through the checks below instead of assuming the feature is absent.

- Check that you are signed in and that the selected entry is the intended Microsoft-account player.
- In Bedrock, start from Play → Friends; in Java, use its separate friends-list management interface.
- Look for an actions menu, overflow menu, or social-controls button attached to the profile.
- If the player is only visible as an online joinable contact, open the broader friends list before trying again.
- Restart Minecraft and repeat the profile check if the interface appears out of date.
Platform-specific labels can vary, but the action you are looking for is Block. Do not select Mute if your intention is to remove the friendship.

The immediate change is the friendship relationship: the player is removed from your friends list according to Minecraft Help. Blocking also changes the ways that player can interact with you through the friendship system.
- The blocked player’s activity is no longer visible to you in the normal friendship context.
- Chat from that player is stopped rather than merely hidden as it is with Mute.
- Invitations from that player are stopped.
- The old friendship may remain on screen temporarily until Minecraft is closed and reopened.
- Other players’ friendships and your Microsoft-account sign-in are unaffected.
Blocking is therefore different from leaving a world, hiding a single conversation, or closing the game. Those actions do not themselves remove a current friend.

No. Blocking changes your friendship and communication relationship with that account. It does not remove the account, erase the player’s worlds, or affect friendships they have with other people.
Why can a parent need to approve adding the person again?
Child-account social permissions are managed through Xbox Family settings. A parent or family organizer may have to allow adding friends or following players before a removed contact can be added again.
Does Minecraft show the same friend controls on every device?
No single button-by-button layout is established for every device. Bedrock documents the Play and Friends context, while Java has a separate friends-list guide, so platform and edition labels can vary.
