Treat an API key as exposed if its value has appeared anywhere outside the boundary where it was meant to remain secret—such as a public repository, a log, a shared file, a build artifact, or a client app. Start incident handling as soon as a provider or scanner alerts you; you do not need proof of misuse before acting. Revoke a public, production, privileged, or otherwise uncertain key promptly, then replace it and verify that its legitimate users still work.
Deleting the visible copy is not enough: someone may already have copied the value, and it can remain usable until the issuing provider disables it. The practical response is to preserve evidence, contain the credential at its issuer, replace it safely, and then investigate and clean up other copies.
What counts as an exposed API key?
A key is exposed when someone who should not be able to obtain it can access its value. The important question is not whether the location looks public at first glance; it is whether the key crossed its intended secret boundary. A key can be exposed in code, files, systems, or messages even if nobody has yet used it maliciously.
- Code and repositories: a public commit, issue, pull request, or other repository content. A key in a private repository is still exposed to people and systems with access beyond its intended audience.
- Operational data: application or CI logs, build artifacts, container layers, caches, backups, temporary files, and support tickets.
- Shared or distributed material: email, file shares, screenshots, copied snippets, and mobile or other client applications that distribute the key to users.
- Detection alerts: a provider notification or secret-scanner alert is enough to begin response. Confirm details while responding rather than waiting for suspicious activity to prove the alert matters.
Google warns that attackers search public repositories, buckets, dumps, email, file shares, backups, and temporary files for service-account keys. That list illustrates why checking only the current source file is inadequate.

Does exposure mean someone has already used the key?
No. Exposure means the value may be accessible to an unauthorized party; it does not by itself establish that the key was copied or used. Conversely, a lack of unfamiliar activity does not prove that an exposed key is safe. Provider alerts, scanner alerts, or a known outside copy should trigger response even when usage appears normal.
What signs suggest an exposed key is being used?
Unfamiliar activity can corroborate exposure, but it is not a prerequisite for revocation. Review the provider’s available usage, authentication, billing, and audit information for activity that does not fit the key’s expected owner, application, or purpose.
- Requests, authentication events, or locations you cannot associate with an authorized user or service.
- Unexpected API, model, or project activity, including activity at unusual times for that integration.
- Spend that rises unexpectedly or usage that does not match the service’s normal pattern.
- A provider or repository scanner identifying the key in a public location or a distributable app.
These are indicators to investigate, not a checklist that must be satisfied before acting. A legitimate integration can have changing traffic, and some provider records may not identify who made a request. Preserve what the provider does show, compare it with the key’s intended uses, and contain the credential if it is exposed or the evidence is uncertain.
What should you do first after finding a key?
Move quickly, but capture enough information to understand what happened. A useful order is to preserve evidence, assess the key’s reach, revoke or disable it at the issuer, replace it, remove other copies, and investigate the account and service.

- Preserve evidence. Record the alert, exposed-file URL or commit, timestamps, repository visibility, key owner, known scopes, and relevant usage or audit records. Save screenshots or export logs before cleanup. GitHub advises that opening a support ticket does not preserve logs, so do not assume another party will retain the records you need.
- Assess the blast radius quickly. Determine whether the key is public, active, used in production, privileged, shared, embedded in a client, or present in more than one place. Identify the services, deployments, scripts, images, and people that use it. GitHub recommends checking whether there are multiple leak alerts, the key’s last use and scope, repository visibility, and production context.
- Contain the key at its issuer. Revoke or disable it in the provider’s console or API. AWS says, “Rotate or revoke it immediately after detection,” and GitHub describes revocation as the most immediate containment action. Removing the text from a repository is not a substitute.
- Create and deploy a replacement. Generate a new key with only the permissions it needs. Update secret storage and every legitimate consumer, deploy the change, and verify authenticated calls. For a planned rotation, overlap the credentials only as long as required to move consumers; invalidate the old key after verification. OpenAI advises users who suspect compromise to delete affected keys and review usage, while Google advises rotating keys, updating applications, and deleting old keys.
- Clean up accessible copies. Remove the value from current files, CI variables, container layers, logs, tickets, caches, and repository history where practical. Do this after containment, and treat cleanup as reducing future discovery—not as recalling copies already made.
- Investigate and document. Review provider usage, billing, authentication, and audit trails for unauthorized calls. Record the indicators, decisions, notifications, and impact. If you confirm misuse or data access, follow your organization’s incident, legal, and privacy processes.
When should you revoke an API key immediately?
Revoke it promptly when it is publicly exposed, active in production, privileged, embedded in a distributable app, named in a provider or scanner alert, associated with unfamiliar use or spend, or of uncertain reach. The key can remain usable after its visible copy disappears, so the safer default is to contain it at the issuer.
GitHub’s guidance is to consider any leaked secret immediately compromised. OWASP’s Secrets Management Cheat Sheet says exposed keys should undergo immediate revocation. Those principles apply even if the investigation has not yet established malicious activity.
What if the key is in a private repository or a test environment?
A private, inactive, test, or development key may allow a short, coordinated replacement window when there is a known owner, no suspicious use, and no broader exposure. Generate and deploy its replacement promptly, then revoke the old credential. This is a controlled migration—not a reason to leave a known leak unresolved; GitHub says medium- and low-risk leaks still require remediation.

If you cannot establish who had access, whether the key is active, or whether copies exist elsewhere, treat that uncertainty as a reason to revoke rather than as evidence of safety.

Can deleting a commit or file make the key safe again?
No. Removing a secret from code, pushing a corrected commit, deleting or recreating a repository, or deleting a local environment file cannot guarantee that copies already made have disappeared. GitHub explicitly warns that these actions do not prevent exploitation. AWS recommends removing exposed secrets from source-control history after revocation, which makes the right order clear: disable the credential first, then clean up the record.
History cleanup still has value: it can prevent the key from being rediscovered in the repository and reduce accidental reuse. But it does not invalidate the credential, and it does not reach copies in logs, backups, email, build products, or other people’s files.
How can you rotate a key without taking production down?
For a planned rotation, stage the replacement and move consumers in a controlled sequence. For an exposed key, containment takes priority: keep the overlap as short as feasible, and do not leave a compromised key active merely to avoid an outage.
- Map consumers. Identify every service, deployment, script, job, or client that reads the old key. Check shared use rather than assuming one application owns it.
- Make a replacement with narrower permissions. Use the smallest scope that supports the required calls. Where supported, constrain it by API, host, referrer, IP, application, scope, or project.
- Put the new value in the intended secret store. Update environment variables or a secrets manager rather than hard-coding it into source. Avoid committing a replacement key while fixing the old leak.
- Deploy and verify. Roll out the new value to its consumers and confirm successful authenticated calls. Check the provider’s usage or audit information and the application’s own operational signals.
- Revoke the old key. After a planned move is verified, invalidate the old credential. If it is already exposed, revoke it immediately and handle any service interruption as part of incident response rather than extending its exposure.
The exact console labels and whether a provider permits overlapping credentials vary. Use the issuer’s current key-management controls; the sources cited here do not establish one universal sequence of UI clicks that applies across providers.

How can you reduce the chance of another leak?
Make it difficult to expose a key, limit what a stolen key can do, and shorten the time it remains useful. OWASP recommends secrets that are short-lived, automatically rotatable, least-visible, revocable, and absent from plaintext logs.
- Store keys in environment variables or a secrets manager; do not hard-code them or commit
.envfiles. - Enable repository secret scanning and pre-commit or CI scans, and schedule recurring scans. Scanning finds some copies; it does not replace issuer-side revocation.
- Use separate keys per project or feature so one leak does not expose every integration.
- Apply provider restrictions where available, including API, host, referrer, IP, application, scope, and project limits.
- Set short expiry where possible, remove unused keys, and rotate periodically. Add spend thresholds and usage alerts so unexpected activity is easier to notice.
- Keep secrets out of plaintext logs and reduce who or what can read them.
Google Cloud announced that automatic disabling of detected exposed service-account keys would be activated by default on June 16, 2024, when the organization policy is configured for DISABLE_KEY. Google also warns that detection is not guaranteed. Because policy settings and provider behavior can vary, verify the current organization configuration rather than assuming a detected key will always be disabled automatically.
How should you compare secret-scanning and key-management controls?
No single control covers every place a key can travel. Provider-native controls are generally the fastest path to action for credentials issued by that provider, while repository scanning can help discover leaks in code. Neither makes the other unnecessary.
| Control question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Where does detection look? | Compare coverage for public repositories, private code, logs, images, and client apps; a scanner may not see every location where a key can land. |
| How quickly does it alert? | Time to alert affects how long an exposed credential may remain usable before responders know about it. |
| Can it disable a detected key automatically? | Automatic disablement can shorten exposure, but check what kinds of keys and policies are covered and whether detection is guaranteed. |
| Can keys be scoped narrowly? | Limits by API, host, referrer, IP, application, scope, or project help constrain what a key can access. |
| Can rotation fit deployment workflows? | Consider whether the control supports automated rotation and whether applications can receive a replacement without an avoidable outage. |
| What evidence is retained? | Audit-log detail and retention affect whether responders can assess use, timing, and potential impact. |
| How is the blast radius isolated? | Separate keys per project or feature reduce the number of systems affected by one credential’s exposure. |
| What happens during failure? | Understand how revocation, replacement, and deployment are handled if a service still depends on the old key. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a deleted GitHub commit still expose my API key?
Yes. A commit may have been copied, cached, or fetched before it was removed, and repository history cleanup cannot invalidate the credential. Treat the key itself as the thing that needs to be disabled.

What if a secret scanner flags a key but I think it is a false positive?
Check the flagged value and its context without reposting it into another tool or ticket. If you cannot confidently establish that it is not a valid credential, handle the alert as a potential exposure and use the issuer’s key controls to verify or revoke it.
Can an API key in a mobile app be kept secret?
A key embedded in a distributable app should be treated as accessible to people who obtain the app. Use a design that does not rely on concealing a privileged server credential in client software, and restrict any client credential to the narrowest supported permissions.
How often should I rotate API keys if there has been no leak?
There is no universal interval established for every provider or key type. Follow the issuer’s current guidance and your organization’s policy, and favor shorter lifetimes or automated rotation where the integration can support them.
