Check whether the review clearly discloses relationships with the product maker or seller, shows evidence of firsthand use, explains how its conclusions were reached, and makes clear whether advertisers can influence what gets reviewed or how results are presented. No single clue proves independence: a disclosure gives useful context, but it does not establish that the review is unbiased, well tested, or accurate.
What independence means in an AI product review
An independent review is one whose coverage and conclusions are not improperly controlled by the product maker, seller, or another commercial party. Independence is not the same as accuracy. A reviewer can be free of commercial influence and still make a mistake; a reviewer can disclose a paid relationship and still report useful observations. Readers need to assess both the review’s incentives and the evidence behind its claims.
For an AI product, useful evidence includes what version the reviewer tried, what task they used it for, what they observed, and what limitations affected the result. Those details help you judge whether a conclusion follows from actual experience rather than from a product description or a vendor’s claims. They are practical credibility checks, not an official AI-review test required by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
- Relationship: Does the review explain payments, commissions, free or discounted access, gifts, employment, or personal ties that could matter to a reader?
- Experience: Does it identify what the reviewer actually tried and what happened?
- Method: Can you see how the reviewer reached the score, ranking, or recommendation?
- Control: Is there evidence that a seller or advertiser influences product selection, conclusions, placement, or prominence?
- Limits: Does the review say what its observations do and do not establish?
These questions are an editorial framework drawn from FTC guidance on disclosures and truthful endorsements. They are not an FTC certification or official rating system for AI reviews.

Start with the disclosure on the review itself
Look on the individual review page, especially near the recommendation, ranking, or purchase link. The disclosure should be easy to notice and should tell you what kind of relationship exists. A reader should not have to infer whether the reviewer was paid, received access or a gift, works for the company, or earns a commission if someone buys through a link.
The FTC says an endorser’s connection to a marketer should be disclosed when it could affect how consumers evaluate the endorsement. The connection may involve compensation or another thing of value. Disclosure gives readers context for weighing the recommendation; it does not automatically make the relationship harmless or the review independent.
Look for a specific description, not just a label
A phrase such as “affiliate link” may not explain that the publisher earns money when a reader makes a purchase. FTC staff advises that affiliate relationships be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, close to the recommendation when possible. The practical question is whether a typical reader can understand the incentive at the point where it matters.

Likewise, “partner content” or “sponsored” may identify a commercial arrangement without telling you whether the vendor supplied access, paid for the article, or had a role in its content. A useful disclosure names the relationship plainly enough to help readers interpret the recommendation.
Check the page you are reading, not only the publisher’s homepage
A homepage-wide statement that products discussed on a site are sometimes provided free may not tell readers which products in a particular review were provided that way. FTC staff explains that a reader may arrive directly at an individual article and never see the homepage notice. A paid review should disclose payment rather than describe the arrangement only as early access.

Publisher-wide ownership or disclosure pages can add context, but they are not a substitute for a clear disclosure beside the individual recommendation when a relationship is relevant to that review.
Look for evidence that the reviewer actually used the AI product
A review should distinguish firsthand observations from information supplied by the vendor. FTC staff guidance says an endorser cannot claim to have used a product if they have not, and should not make unsupported claims about performance or effectiveness. The FTC’s general endorsement principle is: “You can’t talk about your experience with a product if you haven’t tried it.” This is not an AI-specific testing protocol, but it is a useful standard for judging claims presented as personal experience.
For an AI tool, look for concrete information that lets you understand the basis of the review:
- Product identity: Does the writer identify the product or version reviewed clearly enough to distinguish it from another edition or a later release?
- Task: Does the article say what the reviewer asked the tool to do, rather than making broad claims about its capabilities?
- Observed result: Does it describe what the product returned or how it behaved, including a meaningful example where appropriate?
- Setup and conditions: Does it explain relevant settings or circumstances that shaped the result, instead of implying that one experience represents every use?
- Limits: Does it identify where the test was narrow, where the product struggled, or what the review did not evaluate?
These are reader-facing credibility checks, not a legal checklist imposed by the FTC. Their value is that they make it easier to see whether the reviewer’s conclusion is supported by an experience you can evaluate. A claim such as “this tool is accurate” is difficult to assess if the article never says what was tested or what accuracy means in that context.

Separate firsthand observations from vendor claims
A review may include product specifications, feature descriptions, or performance statements from the maker. That information can be relevant, but it is not the same as the reviewer verifying the claim. Notice whether the article attributes claims to the vendor or presents them as observed results. If the review repeats sweeping claims without explaining what the reviewer checked, treat those claims as unverified within the article.
Specific, bounded observations are generally easier to evaluate than broad assurances. For example, a description of a particular task and the result tells you what happened in that instance; it does not by itself establish universal performance. A good review makes that distinction legible rather than asking readers to treat one example as proof of a general promise.
Inspect the review method behind scores and rankings
If a review gives a score, names a “best” product, or ranks several tools, look for the basis of that judgment. The cited FTC materials do not prescribe a scoring method for AI products. The method is therefore an editorial matter, but a transparent one helps readers judge whether the conclusion is understandable and consistent.
- Are the evaluation criteria stated in terms a reader can understand?
- Does the review explain how those criteria relate to the intended use?
- Are the same criteria applied to each product being compared?
- Does the article explain what a score means, rather than presenting a number without context?
- Are important limitations or trade-offs visible alongside the recommendation?
A ranking is harder to trust when the article offers no rationale for why one product outranks another, or when criteria appear only after the conclusion. That does not prove commercial interference, but it leaves you with less evidence for evaluating the judgment. Conversely, a stated method is not proof of independence: a publisher could disclose a method while still having a commercial relationship that readers should consider.

Ask who can influence coverage and presentation
Independence concerns more than the wording of a review. A commercial party might affect which products are included, which conclusions are published, or how prominently a result appears. Check publisher disclosures and ownership information for relationships with the product maker, then look at the review itself for signs that commercial arrangements shape its presentation.
The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule prohibits a business from misrepresenting a review entity it controls as independent. FTC staff also distinguishes ordinary advertising from advertising arrangements that influence review decisions: obvious ad sales beside reviews do not require additional action when those sales do not affect product selection, review content, placement, or prominence. The distinction is whether the commercial activity changes the review or how it is presented, not simply whether the site carries advertising.

As a reader, you may not be able to see every internal decision. Do not treat the presence of ads alone as proof that a review is controlled. Instead, use available disclosures and the article’s explanation of its selection and ranking process to judge whether there is evidence of influence—and how much remains unclear.

This comparison framework is based on FTC disclosure and truthfulness principles, combined with practical questions about how a review communicates its method. It is not an official FTC scorecard, and it cannot reveal facts a publisher has not disclosed.
How to reach a practical judgment
You do not need to decide whether a review is perfectly independent before finding it useful. Instead, assess how much confidence the article earns and what uncertainty remains. A disclosure, firsthand detail, and transparent method answer different questions; one cannot stand in for the others.

- Identify what is firsthand. Separate the reviewer’s stated observations from product descriptions or claims attributed to the maker.
- Trace the conclusion. See whether the stated criteria and examples support the score, ranking, or recommendation.
- Check for commercial control signals. Consider whether the article explains product selection and whether it gives any indication that an advertiser can affect content or prominence.
- Match confidence to evidence. Give more weight to claims the article supports directly, and less to conclusions that outrun its disclosed experience or method.
This approach avoids two common mistakes: treating a disclosure as proof that the review is fair, and treating every commercial relationship as proof that the review is false. The relationship matters because it can affect how readers weigh an endorsement; the evidence and method matter because they show whether the conclusion is supported.
What FTC rules and guidance do—and do not—say
The FTC materials relevant here are US guidance and law. They provide general principles for endorsements and consumer reviews, but they do not establish an AI-specific certification or legal test for whether a product review is independent. The practical questions in this article should not be mistaken for a formal compliance checklist.
The FTC Endorsement Guides describe how the agency views endorsement practices and how Section 5 of the FTC Act may apply. The FTC says the Guides themselves do not have the force of law, although conduct inconsistent with the guidance may lead to investigation or enforcement allegations under Section 5. The agency’s overview summarizes the standard this way: “The law says they also have to be truthful and not misleading.”
A separate rule, the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, 16 CFR Part 465, was published in the Federal Register on August 22, 2024, and took effect on October 21, 2024. It addresses specified practices including fake reviews, buying reviews that express a particular sentiment, some undisclosed insider reviews, falsely presenting a business-controlled review entity as independent, review suppression, and fake social-media influence indicators. The rule’s existence does not mean the FTC has created a general certification for independent AI product reviews.
These qualifications matter if you are using the article to understand legal duties: the cited material establishes US principles, not disclosure rules for every country, and it does not make every omission or weak review method a violation. For a reader deciding what weight to give a review, the practical test remains whether the relationship, experience, reasoning, and possible commercial influence are clear enough to evaluate.
