Android’s key-shaped VPN icon is a system status indicator: it appears when the operating system detects an active VPN connection. You can remove the persistent VPN notification by disabling Always-on VPN, but that also stops Android from forcing the connection to stay active. On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, Good Lock’s QuickStar can hide the VPN icon while leaving the VPN connection usable. These controls affect different parts of Android, so neither method is a universal “hide everything while connected” switch.
What does the VPN key icon mean?
Android Developers describes the key icon in the status bar as an indicator of an active VPN connection. When you open Quick Settings, Android can also show an information panel for the active connection. This is separate from any notification that the VPN app itself creates.
Android 8.0 and later may display a non-dismissible notification when an always-on VPN disconnects or cannot connect. That warning remains until the VPN reconnects or you turn off Always-on VPN for that profile. A VPN app can also publish its own notification channel, so hiding or clearing one notification does not necessarily remove the operating system’s VPN indicator.
The practical distinction is important:
- Always-on notification: controlled by the VPN profile in Android Settings.
- Status-bar key icon: controlled by Android or, on Samsung devices, by Samsung’s status-bar customization.
- VPN-app notification: controlled by the app’s notification settings and channel.
Because Android intentionally keeps users aware of an active VPN, many devices do not offer a built-in setting to hide the system icon while the VPN remains connected.

How do I remove the persistent VPN notification by turning off Always-on VPN?
Turning off Always-on VPN is the broadest method and works on Android phones that expose the standard VPN settings. It clears the persistent always-on warning, but the VPN is no longer forced to remain connected.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet. Some manufacturers label this area Connections.
- Tap VPN.
- Choose the VPN profile you want to change, then tap its gear or settings control.
- Switch Always-on VPN off.
- If the profile shows Block connections without VPN, review that setting before leaving the screen. It determines whether Android is allowed to send traffic when the VPN is unavailable.
Google’s Android Help identifies turning off always-on for that VPN as the way to clear the related notification. If the VPN is currently disconnected, reconnecting it can also make the warning disappear; disabling Always-on prevents Android from continuing to enforce the always-on state.
What changes after Always-on VPN is disabled?
Your VPN app can still connect normally, and you can usually start or stop it from the app or Quick Settings. The difference is enforcement: Android will no longer automatically require that profile to stay active. If the app disconnects, the phone may use its ordinary network unless a separate blocking option prevents that.

Why can’t I find the Always-on VPN switch?
Menu names vary by manufacturer, Android release, and management policy. Look under the VPN profile’s gear icon rather than the general VPN list. A work-profile or device-managed VPN may hide the switch or prevent changes; in that case, the administrator controls the profile.

How do Samsung Galaxy users hide the VPN icon with QuickStar?
Supported Samsung Galaxy phones can hide Samsung’s VPN status-bar indicator through Good Lock and its QuickStar module. This is an icon-visibility control, so it generally leaves the VPN connection itself enabled.
- Open the Galaxy Store and install Good Lock.
- Open Good Lock and install or enable the QuickStar module.
- Open QuickStar and select Visibility of Indicator Icons.
- Find VPN in the list and switch it off.
Samsung’s software is divided into modules, so QuickStar may not be available on every Galaxy model, in every country, or on every One UI release. The exact wording or location can change after a system update.

What does QuickStar hide?
QuickStar targets Samsung’s status-bar indicator. It does not turn off the VPN, change the VPN profile, or necessarily remove a notification generated by the VPN app. If a separate app notification remains, manage that notification in Settings > Notifications > App notifications, using the VPN app’s own channels where available.
What if QuickStar hides the icon but I still see a notification?
Check whether the remaining alert is from the VPN application rather than Samsung’s status-bar layer. Open the notification’s details or the VPN app’s notification settings and adjust only the channel you understand. Some apps use an ongoing notification to show connection state, and disabling it may remove useful warnings even though the VPN remains active.
Which method should I use?
Choose based on whether you want to change VPN enforcement or only hide Samsung’s visual indicator.

| Method | Device coverage | What changes | Does the VPN remain usable? | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off Always-on VPN | Android devices with the standard VPN setting; manufacturers may use different labels | Disables always-on behavior and clears the related persistent notification | Yes, but Android no longer forces it to stay always on | May not hide a separately running VPN app’s icon or notification |
| Good Lock QuickStar | Supported Samsung Galaxy devices | Hides Samsung’s VPN status-bar icon | Generally yes; it changes indicator visibility | Good Lock, QuickStar, model, region, and One UI availability vary |
If your immediate problem is an always-on warning, start with the Android VPN profile and disable Always-on VPN. If you use a Samsung Galaxy and want to keep the VPN active while removing only the key icon, try QuickStar. You may need both approaches if the phone has an always-on profile and a separate VPN-app notification.

A returning icon usually means Android has detected an active VPN again or a visibility setting has been restored. Check the following causes in order:
- The VPN reconnected: the key icon is expected whenever Android sees an active connection.
- Always-on was re-enabled: revisit the VPN profile’s gear settings and confirm the switch remains off.
- QuickStar was disabled: a Good Lock update, module reset, or One UI update can restore the default indicator visibility.
- A different VPN profile connected: more than one profile or a work profile may be present.
- The app has its own notification: hiding Samsung’s icon does not control an app-created notification.
Do not judge success only by the absence of the icon. Open the VPN app or Android’s VPN settings to verify whether the connection is still active, especially after changing notification permissions.
Can Android hide the system VPN icon while the VPN stays connected?
There is no universal Android setting that promises this. Android’s system indicator is designed to communicate that traffic is using a VPN, and some VPN providers state explicitly that they cannot hide the Android system VPN-connected notification while their service is connected.
Samsung’s QuickStar is the notable device-specific exception because it changes Samsung’s presentation of the status bar. On other manufacturers, turning off Always-on changes connection enforcement rather than providing a general icon-hiding control.

What should I check on a managed or work phone?
Work profiles, enterprise VPNs, and device-management policies can control VPN behavior centrally. An administrator may require Always-on VPN, block changes to the profile, or enforce a notification so users can tell when protected traffic is active.
If the switch is missing, disabled, or immediately returns after you change it, contact the organization that manages the phone instead of repeatedly changing app notification permissions. Local notification settings cannot override a device-management policy.
How do I troubleshoot a VPN notification that will not disappear?
- Identify the source: long-press the notification and open its notification details. Determine whether it comes from Android’s system VPN handling or the VPN app.
- Check the profile: go to Settings > Network & internet (or Connections) > VPN, open the profile’s gear settings, and inspect Always-on VPN.
- Check blocking behavior: review Block connections without VPN so you understand what happens when the VPN disconnects.
- On Samsung, check QuickStar: open Good Lock > QuickStar > Visibility of Indicator Icons and confirm VPN visibility is off.
- Look for another profile: a personal VPN and a work-profile VPN can be listed separately.
- Reconnect once: Android may retain an always-on warning while a connection is down; reconnecting can clear it, while disabling Always-on prevents the warning from being enforced again.
- Recheck after updates: One UI, Android, Good Lock, or the VPN app may restore defaults or rename a menu.
Avoid disabling every VPN-related notification blindly. The system and app alerts can warn you that protection has stopped, and removing them may make an unexpected disconnect harder to notice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the trade-offs of hiding the icon?
The key icon is a visibility feature, not a performance problem. Hiding it can make a less cluttered status bar, but it also removes an immediate visual cue that a VPN is active. Turning off Always-on has a larger security implication because the phone is no longer required to keep the tunnel up.

- Use Always-on off when: you need to clear an always-on warning and accept manual control of the VPN.
- Use QuickStar when: you have a compatible Samsung Galaxy and want to change only the status-bar presentation.
- Keep the indicator when: you rely on it to confirm that a work, privacy, or security VPN is connected.
The correct choice depends on whether the unwanted element is a persistent warning, Samsung’s icon, or a VPN app’s own ongoing notification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will hiding the VPN icon disconnect my VPN?
QuickStar changes the Samsung status-bar display and generally does not disconnect the VPN. Disabling Always-on also does not instantly stop a currently connected session, but it removes Android’s requirement to keep that session active; a later disconnect may therefore remain disconnected until you reconnect.
Can I remove the key icon on a Pixel or other non-Samsung phone?
Android’s standard settings let you change Always-on behavior, not universally suppress the active-VPN indicator. If the icon belongs to the operating system, the phone may keep showing it while the VPN is connected.
Why does my VPN notification say it is not connected?
Android can keep an always-on VPN warning visible while the profile is disconnected or unable to connect. Reconnect the VPN, or open the profile settings and turn off Always-on VPN if you no longer want Android to enforce that requirement.

Yes. A work profile or device-management policy can require an always-on VPN, lock the profile, or enforce status notifications. A missing or disabled control usually indicates that the organization managing the phone must make the change.
