There is no proven formula that guarantees a ChatGPT citation. The clearest evidence is more basic: ChatGPT must retrieve your page for the query, and pages whose titles and passages directly match the question language were cited more often in observed studies. Retrieval and the model’s existing knowledge explained substantially more variation than page-formatting features such as FAQ blocks or schema markup.
A 2026 study counted 468,037 citations across 158,099 answers collected over two 90-day commercial datasets. That is the evidence behind the rounded “400 million” idea, not a count of every ChatGPT citation. Use the findings as measurement guidance and publishing principles, not as a guaranteed optimization recipe.
What does the “400 million citations” figure actually represent?
The closest directly relevant primary study reports 468,037 citations across 158,099 answers, collected by Mahe Chen and Nick Koudas in 2026. The data came from two commercial markets—US home internet and small-business software—over two 90-day collection periods. It is a large observational sample, but it is not a census of all ChatGPT conversations or all generative-search citations.

The study describes generative search systems that include ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Its ChatGPT-specific analysis used API replays and controlled probes. A separate production-Web study examined a much smaller but repeated sample: 80 questions in four intents, asked in Chinese and English, across four ChatGPT Web settings from late March through late July 2026, producing roughly 4,200 runs. Those two projects answer different questions: one provides scale and citation-pattern analysis; the other shows how unstable citations can be across settings, wording and time.

When you write about the headline number, attribute it as “468,037 citations across 158,099 answers — Mahe Chen and Nick Koudas, 2026.” Calling it 400 million without that qualification implies a dataset the study did not report.
How does ChatGPT decide which pages to cite?
ChatGPT can cite a page only after the page is present in the results it retrieved for that answer. In an API replay analyzed by Chen and Koudas, every page ChatGPT cited had appeared in the engine’s retrieved results. Retrieval is therefore a prerequisite; improving a page’s appearance after retrieval cannot make it the cited source for a run in which the page was never found.
Question and passage matching
Pages were more likely to be cited when their titles and paragraphs used the language of the user’s question and answered it directly. This is an association in the observed data, not proof that inserting a phrase will cause a citation. It does suggest a practical editorial test: if a reader asks a question in one sentence, can the page’s title and opening explanation be recognized as an answer to that same question?

For ChatGPT, retrieval explained 32% of within-website citation variation in the 2026 study, while measured page features explained 2.8%. Those percentages apply to that dataset and method; they are not a forecast for an individual site. They do show why chasing isolated formatting signals is unlikely to compensate for a page that the system does not retrieve.
Model familiarity and named entities
The study also found that known brands and sources could influence what the system searched for and cited. In some answers, a brand was named even when the cited page did not provide a corresponding supporting page. This is a study-specific observation, not a rule that recognition will produce citations in every subject or market. A less-known publisher should not assume that mentioning a famous entity will substitute for clear, relevant evidence on its own page.

How can I increase the chance that ChatGPT cites my website?
You cannot force a citation, but you can make a page easier to retrieve, identify and use as an answer. Treat the following as a practical workflow derived from the observed associations, not as tested causal levers.
1. Start with real questions
Build pages around the way people ask, not only around an internal product name or a broad keyword. For example, “How do I move a website to a new host without downtime?” is a clearer target than a generic heading such as “Migration services.” Put the main question in the title when it accurately describes the page, then answer it in the opening paragraphs.

2. Put the answer before the background
State the outcome, requirement or limitation first. Follow with definitions, evidence, steps and edge cases. A retrieval system and a reader should be able to identify the page’s answer without scanning a long preamble. Keep each major claim close to the explanation that supports it.
3. Make one page useful for one intent
Separate factual lookups from comparisons, troubleshooting and recommendations when the answers differ. A page that tries to answer every possible intent can become less relevant to each individual query. Use descriptive subheadings so a retrieved passage retains its meaning when shown without the entire article.
4. Keep important facts explicit and current
Write out versions, dates, geographic limits, plan conditions and exceptions instead of assuming the reader will infer them. Update or retire instructions that no longer apply. This does not guarantee retrieval, but it prevents a cited passage from being ambiguous or misleading.

5. Build evidence a model can attribute
Identify who measured a result, when it was measured and under what conditions. Distinguish a one-time observation from a recurring price or a laboratory test from a field result. Clear attribution gives a retrieved passage enough context to be used responsibly.

Run representative questions in the ChatGPT setting your audience actually uses. Record whether your exact URL appeared, whether only your hostname or entity appeared, which passage was cited, the date, the model or Web setting and the question wording. If the page never appears in retrieved results, changing markup alone cannot address that retrieval gap.
Does ranking on Google make ChatGPT cite a page?
Google visibility is useful context, but it is not a substitute for observing ChatGPT retrieval. In the 2026 replay, most ChatGPT-retrieved pages did not appear in Google’s top 50 for the engine’s queries. The result is limited to the studied US commercial questions and replay period, so it should not be generalized to every country, language or topic.
Within 4,946 ChatGPT source lists in the same study, citation rates varied by the page’s position in the retrieved list:

These are observed rates, not probabilities for your page. They indicate that being retrieved near the top is associated with more citations, while also showing why “rank one” claims need to specify which engine and which source list they mean.

Why search overlap can be misleading
In the repeated ChatGPT Web study, Google Search and the OpenAI Responses API together recovered about one quarter of the cited URLs but about half of the cited hostnames. A domain can therefore appear relevant at an entity level even when the exact article URL is absent from another search system. Track exact URLs and hostnames separately rather than treating a domain-level match as proof that your target page was cited.
Do FAQ schema, structured data or summary boxes help?
The within-website comparisons did not show citation gains associated with FAQ blocks, schema markup, summary boxes, author boxes or faster pages. That result does not prove these features are useless: they can improve accessibility, navigation, search snippets or reader trust for other reasons. It does mean you should not promise that adding one of them will earn ChatGPT citations.
Use structured data when it accurately describes the page and meets the relevant search guidelines. Keep the visible answer complete even if markup is removed, because the evidence points to retrieval and query match as the stronger observed explanations.

A single prompt and a single screenshot are not reliable measurements. Citation visibility changes with question wording, repeated runs, model setting and time. A repeatable log makes those variables visible.
- Choose a question set. Include factual, synthesis, analysis and recommendation intents that matter to your audience. Preserve the exact wording so later runs are comparable.
- Run each question repeatedly. Use the same ChatGPT Web setting or API configuration for a test batch, then note any setting or model change. The production-Web study found different behavior across settings and repeated runs.
- Capture the source identity. Record the exact cited URL, the hostname, the cited passage if available, the date and the question. A hostname-only appearance is not the same as citation of the target article.
- Check retrieval, not just citation. If the interface exposes source results, note whether your page was retrieved but not selected. That distinguishes a retrieval problem from a selection problem.
- Compare with conventional search carefully. Log Google or Bing rank as context, never as a replacement for ChatGPT’s own source list.
- Review trends over time. Look for consistent changes across several runs and dates instead of treating one favorable or unfavorable answer as a verdict.
The study by Jiang, Zhang, Xing, Chang and Xiao sampled 80 prompts and approximately 4,200 runs; its scale illustrates why repeated observation matters, while still being too small to support universal rates.

What do these studies not prove?
They do not prove that publishing more pages, changing a heading, adding schema, buying monitoring software or copying a frequently cited format causes more citations. The authors describe their findings as observational associations, not causal claims or tested optimization strategies.
There are important scope limits. The larger preprint analyzed English-language US commercial questions, used API replays that may differ from consumer applications and could not analyze about one third of cited URLs. Both projects examine systems that change continuously. Exact rates should not be transferred to another country, language, niche, model generation or date without fresh measurement.
The practical implication is to separate two goals: making a page genuinely useful and measuring whether a particular ChatGPT configuration retrieves and cites it. The first is an editorial responsibility; the second is an empirical monitoring task.
What is a sensible publishing checklist?
- Phrase the title and opening in the language of a real audience question.
- Answer the question immediately, then provide supporting detail and limitations.
- Keep each page focused on a recognizable intent.
- State dates, versions, regions, conditions and sources for material claims.
- Make important evidence easy to identify in a standalone passage.
- Test exact URLs and hostnames separately across repeated ChatGPT runs.
- Record the setting, model, wording and date for every observation.
- Treat Google rankings as context rather than proof of ChatGPT visibility.
- Do not sell FAQ markup, speed work or summary boxes as guaranteed citation levers.
- Revisit conclusions when ChatGPT’s search and model settings change.
